At Dead Of Night is a nauseating independent horror game developed by Baggy Cat Ltd. that delivers healthy doses of thrills and scares at every corner. Before I delve into the story and my experience with this game, I should mention that the developers' achievement in At Dead Of Night is astounding! The minimal attention to detail, and the combination of computer generated imagery (CGI) and full motion video (FMV), create a disturbingly fun experience. The music is the icing on the cake.

Story

Have you ever taken a scenic route on your way to a festival and gotten stuck in a village with a weak phone signal? (I'm looking at you, Wacken-goers.) Well, that's what we learn about our heroine Maya, who takes refuge in a nearby hotel as a hailstorm approaches. The receptionist, Jimmy Hall is a kindly gentleman , who sees that Maya is safe and comfortable in her room before he decides to murder her friends. When Maya wakes up to hear a muffled scream, a chilling mouse chase begins, with clues and clues scattered behind closed doors, and the terrifying Jimmy looking out from the shadows, waiting to hit Maya over the head at every wrong turn.

Maya soon discovers that the hotel has a much darker past than she initially thought, and decides to uncover the sequence of events that led Jimmy Hall to his mental breakdown. She uses an otherworldly communication device and a fortune-telling mirror to piece together clues and ghost sightings, in hopes of reconstructing Jimmy's past.

Really, Maya! I for once (for the hundredth time since I pressed "play"), head for the front door and get out of here!

I'm hiding in the closet. Support!

I don't usually play horror movies. I was traumatized as a kid watching others play Doom 3, and so I decided Sims 3 was more up my alley. Building ungodly mansions and poisoning Sims with blowfish sushi is what I aspire to. Driving sleep-deprived parents crazy when a fifth pair of twins arrives from the maternity ward is my joke. I'm a simple woman.

The fact that At Dead of Night relies on simple storytelling and has such simple, "built-in" mechanics convinced me to try it out! Since it's a point-and-click survival game, you can't run from the enemy or fight back. You just have to be sneaky and play smart. The camera movements seem dull and limited, which causes anxiety when taking a turn or just looking around.

"Jimmy! I'm heeeere! " I repeat from behind the screen as my character lures the villain into a dimly lit room somewhere next to a medieval knight's armor. I feel cocky, knowing that I can outsmart my enemy and lock him behind me as I rush straight to the elevator. AHA! You didn't see that one coming, did you Jimmy? ... He hits me in the head as I turn around. I scream. My character feels intoxicated - I need a drink.

The Jumpscares

I watched three hours of gameplay on John Wolfe's YouTube channel, telling myself I would not play this game. I screamed, threw my phone on the couch multiple times, and I kicked the air out of my legs once . By the end of the last video, I really wanted to see more, especially how it ends (John Wolfe respected the creators' desire not to reveal how the game ends on his YouTube channel. Good for you, John!), So I went ahead Steam and I bought ourselves the real deal.

How did it go, you ask? Even though I already know how the story unfolds, I still get caught up trying to find my way through the labyrinthine hotel, and am surprised when ghosts reveal something new or appear right in front of my nose!

I have yet to decide who is more frightening: Jimmy hiding by the bathroom stalls or the ghosts appearing out of thin air in the middle of the room? Either way, I scream every time!

How good are your reflexes? I think you'll enjoy this game, it's pure adrenaline!

A big round of applause for Baggy Cat Ltd, thank you for this great game! At Dead Of Night can be purchased on Steam .
