Bloody Spell

Bloody Spell is an action game with RPG elements from Elong Games studio. The title tries to fit into the type of gameplay known from Devil May Cry combined with the works of FromSoftware (creators of Sekiro and Dark Souls).

Story

Bloody Spell takes us to the fantasy land inspired by ancient China. We play as a young warrior Yejin, who together with his sister Li 10 years ago started learning martial arts in the Wanfa Order. However, our school is attacked by mysterious organization Void Legion. We wake up in the prison of the Legion, not remembering exactly what happened. However, we soon learn that the school has been destroyed, our master killed and our beloved sister kidnapped in order to offer her as a bloody sacrifice to the gods. There is nothing left for us but to regain our freedom, find our sister and take our revenge.

Mechanics

Bloody Spell is an action game with RPG elements. The core of the gameplay is fighting with numerous opponents, interrupted by boss battles. Death is not hard to come by, and each death has its consequences. This style of gameplay may bring to mind FromSoftware titles (Sekiro or Dark Souls), while the dynamics of the clashes reminds games from the Devil May Cry series.

The fight in Bloody Spell is dynamic and arcade. Depending on the weapon wielded by us our fighting style differs a bit, the same goes for our opponents. For example, enemies with a shield have a better chance of blocking our frontal attack, but they are slower; and enemies with two daggers are fast and can instantly be right next to us. In addition to ordinary opponents, from time to time we also meet bosses, who are distinguished by their strength and skills. It is worth noting that our character is quite fragile. Life is renewed only after finding the right essence, and just a few accurate blows are enough to kill us. As a result, the game relies heavily on the mechanics of dodging and using special abilities.

Special abilities can be divided into 2 types - passive and activated. Passive ones take the form of stat bonuses, while the activated ones give us access to special moves. There are no level mechanics in Bloody Spell. But in chests and for killed opponents we get different kinds of amber, which are required to activate our powers.

Equipment in Bloody Spell is found similarly to amber - in chests and after defeated opponents. From time to time we also encounter monuments, where we can buy additional pieces of equipment for the game currency, which is Blood. However, the game discourages us from hoarding.

The game cannot be saved. Every time we die, we go back to the cell where we started the game and we lose all the equipment we didn't wear and the Blood. Additionally, each time we start over, the layout of corridors, rooms and enemies changes.

Fighting is the main element of gameplay in Bloody Spell, but not the only one. In the game we also come across simple mini-games. We can throw a spear at the mouse; move the key between obstacles to open the chest; or play traditional cups. Between the rooms, from time to time, we also come across obstacles - deadly pendulums or saws sticking out of the floor, which require proper coordination and timing to overcome.

Interesting Facts

Bloody Spell was not developed for PC. Zhongshan Subor is a popular in China and some African countries developer of consoles, which were the answer to the products from Nintendo. The developer's latest project was to be called Subor Z-Plus, and Bloody Spell was to be the launch title for the platform. Sales of the console never took off, however, and the team responsible for creating the hardware was disbanded.

A paid DLC was released for the game, which makes our hero change gender after wearing a special outfit.
