Game Description

The Callisto Protocol on PC is a third-person science-fiction survival-horror game from Striking Distance Studios and publisher KRAFTON. The current Steam and Epic Games Store name remains The Callisto Protocol; there is no verified rebrand or replacement edition. Its identity is built around brutal close-quarters combat, ranged weapons, gravity manipulation, and a tightly directed single-player escape from Black Iron Prison.

A melee-first survival-horror combat loop

You play as Jacob Lee, an inmate trapped inside Black Iron Prison on Callisto, one of Jupiter's moons. The campaign combines exploration, scripted horror, scavenging, weapon upgrades, and direct encounters with rapidly mutating Biophage creatures. The perspective stays in third person, keeping Jacob visible while allowing the game to stage cinematic attacks and environmental hazards around him.

Combat is the defining feature. Jacob uses a stun baton for heavy melee strikes, firearms for ranged pressure and precision shots, and a directional evasion system that asks players to hold left or right as attacks arrive. Blocking reduces incoming damage, but it is not a full replacement for movement. Encounters are designed around reading enemy patterns, creating space, and switching between tools instead of relying on ammunition alone.

After a melee combo, enemies can expose openings for skill shots. A fast firearm response can remove limbs, interrupt attacks, or reduce an opponent's mobility. Mutating enemies also present a specific threat: when tentacles emerge, shooting them quickly can prevent a stronger form from appearing. This gives the combat loop a priority system beyond simply lowering health bars.

The GRP and environmental kills

Jacob's GRP glove is the game's most distinctive system. It can pull Biophage enemies toward him, throw them away, and manipulate objects at a distance. The glove has limited energy, so it is a tactical resource rather than an unlimited ability. Its value increases when an arena contains hazards that can become weapons.

Spike walls, industrial machinery, ledges, explosive objects, and other environmental dangers let players convert positioning into damage. A dangerous group can sometimes be controlled more efficiently by throwing one enemy into a hazard than by spending several rounds of ammunition. The strongest encounters encourage deliberate combinations of GRP crowd control, baton attacks, shooting, and dismemberment.

Weapon and ability upgrades are purchased at Reforge stations using Callisto Credits. Upgrade paths cover the stun baton, GRP, and firearms, with choices affecting damage, capacity, stability, energy use, and alternate-fire behavior. Because one playthrough does not naturally maximize every upgrade path, the system rewards players who commit to a preferred combat style.

Story structure, exploration, and horror tone

The campaign follows Jacob's attempt to escape the prison while uncovering the secrets behind the outbreak and the United Jupiter Company. Black Iron Prison provides the central setting, moving through secure facilities, industrial spaces, exposed lunar environments, and other locations connected to the catastrophe. The structure is linear and narrative-led rather than an open-ended exploration game.

Exploration still matters. Players search rooms and side paths for ammunition, healing items, Callisto Credits, audio logs, documents, and upgrade resources. Optional routes can reveal additional context and supplies, but the game generally keeps progression focused on the next story objective. Players looking for a more puzzle-heavy survival-horror structure may prefer first-person survival horror like Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, which places greater emphasis on backtracking and environmental problem solving.

The horror presentation relies on oppressive industrial environments, body horror, audio design, sudden attacks, and the physicality of enemy damage. The result is closer to an action-forward survival-horror experience than a purely resource-starved stealth game. Gore is not an optional visual accent; dismemberment and transformation are integrated into how encounters work.

Modes and post-campaign content

The base campaign is a solo experience with difficulty options designed to change how demanding combat and resource management feel. New Game+ adds a replay path for players who want to revisit the story with progression carried forward. The game also includes achievement support and Steam Cloud on the Steam version.

Additional paid content expands the structure beyond the main campaign:

  • Contagion Mode introduces a custom-balanced challenge with stronger enemies, limited resources, no manual saves, and chapter-level progress loss after death.
  • Riot Mode is a wave-based survival mode set in a new area, with escalating enemy encounters, credits, upgrades, health, and resource purchases.
  • Final Transmission adds a story-focused chapter with new enemies and weapons, extending the narrative around Black Iron Prison and the Biophage threat.
  • The content lineup also includes cosmetic collections such as Outer Way, Watchtower, Prospector, Snake, Retro Prisoner, Biophage, and Gore-themed sets.

The Digital Deluxe Edition includes the Season Pass and its associated content, while the standard purchase is centered on the main game. The content model is therefore a paid premium game with optional story, challenge-mode, and cosmetic additions rather than a free-to-play service.

Who should play The Callisto Protocol?

The game suits PC players who want third-person sci-fi horror, cinematic storytelling, brutal enemy animations, and combat that makes melee attacks central. It is especially appealing to players who enjoy learning enemy behavior, upgrading a small arsenal, and using environmental hazards to control encounters.

It is less suitable for players expecting cooperative play, a large interconnected map, extensive puzzle solving, or a traditional cover-shooter system. The directional dodge mechanic also demands adjustment because evasion is tied to movement input rather than a conventional dodge button. Players who prefer stealth and constant pursuit may find first-person cat-and-mouse horror such as Alien: Isolation a closer match for that style of tension.

PC features, controls, and localization

The PC edition supports keyboard and mouse controls as well as gamepad input. Epic Games Store lists controller support, achievements, and single-player functionality, while the Steam edition lists Steam Cloud, achievements, family sharing, and a third-party EULA. There is no campaign co-op, split-screen mode, or competitive multiplayer component.

PC-specific rendering options include ray tracing support when compatible with the player's system. The game uses a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 4.27 with selected Unreal Engine 5 features and custom Striking Distance Studios lighting and rendering technology. DLSS is not supported on PC, a relevant distinction for players comparing its graphics options with other modern horror games.

Localization is broad. Supported text languages include English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Latin American Spanish. Full audio is available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese, with subtitles and interface support covering the wider language selection.

Similar PC horror games

The Callisto Protocol shares its third-person survival-horror foundation and dismemberment focus with action-heavy survival horror such as Resident Evil 4 Remake, but its combat is more committed to close-range baton attacks and directional dodging. Resident Evil 4 Remake offers broader weapon variety and more traditional shooting encounters, while Callisto emphasizes physical impact and environmental execution.

Players who want a darker, more psychologically unstable survival-horror campaign can also consider third-person horror games like The Evil Within. The comparison is useful, but the two games approach tension differently: The Evil Within leans more heavily into stealth, traps, ammunition scarcity, and surreal scenario changes, while Callisto keeps its combat system at the center of nearly every major encounter.

Does the PC version support controllers?

Yes. The PC release supports controller input alongside keyboard and mouse controls. Platform listings also identify the game as a single-player title with achievement support.

What does the Season Pass include?

The Season Pass includes the Outer Way Skin Collection, Contagion Bundle, Riot Bundle, and Final Transmission. These additions combine cosmetics, a restrictive challenge mode, a wave-based survival mode, and an additional story chapter.
