Game Description

Samurai Shodown is a PC weapon-based 2D fighting game from SNK, built around deliberate spacing, high-damage attacks, and tense one-on-one duels. The current Steam and Epic Games Store listings still use the name SAMURAI SHODOWN; it is not a renamed edition. In Japan, the series is known as Samurai Spirits, which explains the alternate branding found in older coverage and regional materials.

Unlike combo-heavy fighters that reward constant offense, Samurai Shodown makes every approach dangerous. A single heavy slash can change the match, while a missed attack can leave your character exposed long enough to lose the round.

Fundamentals-first weapon combat

Matches are built around footsies, reach, whiff punishment, and reading your opponent. Armed attacks vary by button and distance, while kicks and special moves give each fighter additional ways to control space.

The combat system includes guarding, throws, dodges, counters, and Just Defense. A perfectly timed guard can create a Stance Break, while a well-read counter can deflect a slashing attack and knock the opponent backward.

Weapons are not cosmetic. A successful heavy counter or Blade Catch can send an opponent's weapon flying, forcing them to fight with weaker unarmed attacks until the blade is recovered.

That design creates a slower, more observant rhythm than most mainstream fighting games. Samurai Shodown is accessible at the control level, but its real depth comes from knowing when not to swing.

Rage, reversals, and lethal momentum

Taking damage fills the Rage Gauge. Once full, the fighter enters Max Rage, gaining increased attack power, enhanced special moves, and access to a Weapon Flipping Technique.

You can also spend the gauge on Rage Explosion. This sharply increases offensive power and unlocks Lightning Blade, but it is limited to once per match and consumes the Rage Gauge after activation.

Rage Explosion lasts longer when your life is low, making it a comeback tool rather than a simple damage boost. Activating it too early may waste your best chance to reverse a losing round.

Every character also has a Super Special Move that can be used once during a match. These attacks add another layer of resource management because saving the move can be just as important as landing it.

Characters such as Haohmaru, Nakoruru, Genjuro, and Galford approach neutral space differently, so choosing a main character is less about finding a universal combo route and more about selecting the range, speed, and threat profile you understand best.

Modes for practice and mastery

The solo structure is focused rather than campaign-heavy. Story provides character-specific progression and encounters, while Battle mode supports direct matches against the CPU or another player.

Battle also includes Gauntlet, Survival, and Time Trial. Gauntlet asks you to defeat the available roster, Survival tracks how many opponents you can overcome, and Time Trial rewards efficient play while extending the clock through successful actions.

Practice mode includes a tutorial covering the main controls and systems. Training lets you set the opponent's guard, counters, wake-up behavior, life settings, Rage Gauge, and Super Special Move availability.

The training room also supports recorded opponent actions, including reversal recordings. That makes it useful for testing responses to pressure, practicing wake-up situations, and checking whether a defensive idea works consistently.

Dojo is one of the game's most distinctive systems. It uses asynchronous Ghost data to create CPU-controlled opponents that imitate player habits, including your own character's behavior after enough actions have been recorded.

Dojo also includes an Ironman Challenge against randomly selected Ghosts. The available challenges cover 10, 50, or 100 opponents, giving experienced players a structured way to test adaptation without relying on a live match.

Online play and the PC ecosystem

The PC versions support ranked matches, casual rooms, online training, leaderboards, and spectator functionality. Casual rooms include single versus play and team formats, with team battles supporting two-on-two, three-on-three, and five-on-five arrangements.

Both PC storefront versions now have rollback netcode. Steam received its rollback update through the main game, while the Epic Games Store version was also included in SNK's PC rollback rollout.

Rollback improves the online experience, but it does not guarantee perfect matches across every distance or connection. Player population, regional matchmaking, and opponent availability remain practical considerations for a specialized fighting game.

Steam lists shared or split-screen PvP, Steam Cloud, Achievements, Trading Cards, Family Sharing, and Remote Play Together. The Epic Games Store lists Windows support, cloud saves, online multiplayer, and single-player functionality, with an Epic ID required for that version.

SNK is the developer and publisher. The game uses Unreal Engine 4 for its presentation, combining stylized character models with dramatic hit reactions, weapon effects, and visible damage feedback.

Content model and available editions

The base game is a paid fighting game rather than a free-to-play title. The Steam listing separates the main game from its optional character add-ons and bundles.

The available DLC lineup includes characters such as Rimururu, Basara, Kazuki Kazama, Wan-Fu, Mina Majikina, Sogetsu Kazama, Iroha, Warden, Cham Cham, Hibiki Takane, Shiro Tokisada Amakusa, and Baiken.

Season Pass 3 contains four character add-ons: Cham Cham, Hibiki Takane, Shiro Tokisada Amakusa, and Baiken. The main game is required, and the characters can also be purchased separately.

Steam additionally lists Steam Edition, Deluxe Pack, and Kiwami Pack bundles. The Kiwami Pack combines the base game with the listed character DLC, making it the most complete single-purchase option on that storefront when available.

Players should check the exact contents of a bundle before buying because the base game, individual characters, and season passes are separate products. There is no current storefront rebrand that turns the PC version into a differently named definitive edition.

Who should play Samurai Shodown?

Samurai Shodown suits players who enjoy high-stakes neutral, deliberate defense, weapon ranges, and matches where a small number of correct decisions matter more than long combo sequences.

It is a strong choice for fighting-game players who want a roster with clear identities and a practice mode that exposes the systems behind each exchange. The tutorial and adjustable training options make the fundamentals approachable.

The game is less suitable for players seeking a large cinematic campaign, constant combo pressure, or a large collection of single-player minigames. Its strongest content is the duel itself, supported by ranked play, local versus, Ghost battles, and repeated character mastery.

Players who enjoy 3D weapon fighters such as Soulcalibur VI may appreciate the emphasis on reach and weapon identity, although Samurai Shodown uses a 2D fighting-plane structure rather than sidestepping and ring-out positioning.

Similar PC fighting games

For another SNK fighter with a larger emphasis on team construction, The King of Fighters XV's three-character team battles provide a very different strategic loop built around assists, rotations, and layered offense.

Street Fighter 6's fundamentals-driven 2D matches are a natural comparison for players who want traditional spacing and competitive online play, but its Drive system and broader solo content create a more expansive overall package.

Samurai Shodown remains the more specialized option. Its identity comes from weapon reach, defensive reads, Rage decisions, and the constant possibility that one clean strike will decide the exchange.

Samurai Shodown FAQ

Is Samurai Shodown on PC still called Samurai Shodown?

Yes. The current Steam and Epic Games Store listings use SAMURAI SHODOWN. The Japanese regional name Samurai Spirits refers to the same franchise branding, not a separate current PC edition.

Does the PC version have rollback netcode?

Yes. The Steam version received an official rollback netcode update, and the Epic Games Store version was included in SNK's PC rollback update rollout.

Does Samurai Shodown support local multiplayer?

Yes. Steam lists shared or split-screen PvP, and the game supports local versus battles. Steam also lists Remote Play Together for remote access to the local multiplayer experience.

Does Samurai Shodown have online team battles?

Yes. Casual online rooms include team formats supporting two-on-two, three-on-three, and five-on-five matches, alongside single versus and online training options.

Is all character content included in the base game?

No. The base game is sold separately from optional character DLC and season passes. Season Pass 3 contains Cham Cham, Hibiki Takane, Shiro Tokisada Amakusa, and Baiken, while larger Steam bundles combine the main game with multiple character add-ons.

What languages are supported on PC?

Steam lists English, French, Italian, German, Spanish from Spain, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean interface or subtitle support. Japanese is listed with full audio.
