Game Description
Days Gone Remastered on PC is an open-world third-person action-survival game built around motorcycle travel, scavenging, stealth, firearms, crafting, and massive Freaker encounters. The important storefront detail is that PC stores continue to list the base game as Days Gone, not as a separate Remastered product. The PC version receives the remaster-related improvements through updates, while the new Broken Road DLC adds the extra modes and enhanced Photo Mode.
Developed by Bend Studio and published on PC by PlayStation Publishing LLC, the game follows Deacon St. John, a drifter and bounty hunter crossing the Pacific Northwest after a devastating pandemic. It is a solo experience with no co-op campaign, split-screen option, or competitive multiplayer layer.
The road is the main survival system
Days Gone is at its best when movement, preparation, and danger overlap. Deacon’s Drifter bike is more than transportation: fuel, repairs, storage, performance upgrades, and visual customization all affect how confidently you can travel between camps, missions, and unexplored locations.
The open world combines forests, rural settlements, caves, tunnels, ambush sites, NERO facilities, infestations, and hostile survivor camps. Weather, visibility, and the day-night cycle change the risk of travelling. Freakers become a greater concern when visibility drops, while a damaged or empty bike can turn a routine journey into an improvised search for fuel and materials.
Combat supports several approaches. Deacon can use firearms, melee weapons, throwable explosives, traps, stealth takedowns, and environmental positioning. Ammunition and crafting supplies are limited enough to make scavenging important, but the game is not a pure survival simulator. The central rhythm is closer to a story-driven action adventure with survival pressure layered over an open-world sandbox.
Freakers, hordes, and human threats
Individual Freakers are dangerous in groups, but the signature challenge is the horde encounter. Hundreds of enemies can move as a single mass, climb over terrain, surround the player, and force constant decisions about escape routes, ammunition, explosives, and stamina. Hordes are not simply larger versions of ordinary enemies; they turn the environment into a moving tactical problem.
Human enemies create a different kind of pressure. Ambush camps, marauders, militia forces, and rival survivors reward scouting and controlled engagements rather than blind shooting. Deacon’s Focus Mode, skill progression, weapon upgrades, and crafting options gradually expand the tools available for both stealth and direct combat.
Camp progression adds structure to the open world. Completing jobs, rescuing survivors, turning in Freaker ears, and delivering resources can improve trust with encampments, unlocking better weapons, bike parts, and supplies. The result is a gradual transition from vulnerable drifter to a more capable hunter who can deliberately challenge threats that were previously best avoided.
What the PC Remastered experience actually includes
For PC players, the Remastered distinction is easy to misunderstand. The storefront product remains Days Gone, while the base-game update supplies remaster-related improvements such as visual refinements, accessibility options, and compatibility for the Broken Road content. The separately sold Broken Road DLC is the purchase that adds the new gameplay modes.
Broken Road includes Horde Assault, a survival-arcade mode focused on score chasing and escalating enemy pressure. It uses familiar regions including Cascade, Belknap, Lost Lake, and Crater Lake, but rearranges the experience around larger and more aggressive encounters. Players begin with limited equipment, search supply boxes for randomized weapons, complete side objectives for resources and experience, and try to survive increasingly difficult waves.
Horde Assault also introduces mode-specific progression, rewards, cosmetic patches, playable character skins, and gameplay-altering Injectors. Positive Injectors can increase score while raising the challenge, while negative Injectors provide survival benefits at a scoring cost. This gives the mode more depth than a simple endless-wave arena.
The DLC also adds Speedrun Mode and Permadeath Mode. Speedrun Mode tracks completion time by difficulty and pauses the timer during cinematics. Permadeath can be configured for the entire story or by act: a death can either erase the run completely or return Deacon to the beginning of the current act. These are meaningful replay systems for players who have already mastered the standard campaign.
PC controls, display options, and accessibility
The PC edition supports keyboard and mouse controls alongside full controller support. Steam lists support for Xbox controllers, DualShock controllers through USB, DualSense controllers through USB, and Steam Input. DualSense features include haptic feedback, but the full range of controller effects requires a wired connection.
PC-specific presentation options include ultrawide monitor support, adjustable field of view, extensive display customization, and a Super Resolution option for Photo Mode. The enhanced Photo Mode adds more lighting control and the ability to switch environmental lighting conditions for more deliberate shots of the Oregon wilderness, Deacon, his bike, or a nearby horde.
The updated accessibility suite includes customizable subtitles, high-contrast settings, HUD adjustments, persistent center-dot options, camera recentering, haptic intensity controls, remappable controls, and adjustable game speed. Auto-complete Quick Time Events can be enabled across the available difficulty settings. One limitation matters on PC: UI Narration is not supported for the Broken Road DLC.
Localization is broad. Steam lists interface and subtitle support across languages including English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and several additional European languages. Audio availability is more limited than text localization, so players should distinguish between interface, subtitles, and full voice support when choosing a storefront.
Storefront and ownership differences
Steam and Epic present the PC product as Days Gone with Broken Road available separately or through a bundle. The base game is single-player, uses the relevant storefront client, and includes platform features such as achievements and cloud saves where supported. Broken Road requires ownership of the base game.
GOG also lists the game under the original Days Gone name and identifies it as DRM-free. GOG Galaxy is optional because the game can be installed through offline installers, although Galaxy remains useful for features such as cloud synchronization. GOG also exposes version-branch options, so players should avoid reverting to an older branch if they want access to Broken Road compatibility and later improvements.
Who should play Days Gone Remastered on PC?
This is a strong fit for players who want a solo open-world zombie game where the vehicle, inventory, weather, and enemy ecology all matter. It particularly suits players who enjoy moving between story missions and self-directed activities, gradually improving a vehicle, and preparing for encounters that can escalate beyond the original plan.
It is less suitable for anyone seeking online co-op, a compact survival-horror campaign, or a consistently fast opening. The game spends substantial time establishing Deacon, the camps, and the wider world before its systems become more flexible. Players who dislike repeated open-world activities or long stretches of travel may find the structure uneven.
For a more vertical first-person approach to infected combat, parkour, and day-night survival, open-world zombie action games such as Dying Light Ultimate Edition offer a useful contrast. Days Gone is slower and more vehicle-focused, while Dying Light emphasizes movement through dense urban spaces.
Similar PC survival experiences
Players who want a stronger community-management layer should consider sandbox zombie survival games like State of Decay 2 Juggernaut Edition. That game places more weight on survivor recruitment, base management, resource logistics, and permanent character losses, whereas Days Gone centers on one protagonist and a directed story.
For a more cinematic third-person survival experience built around stealth, scarcity, and narrative tension, story-led post-apocalyptic adventures such as The Last of Us Part I are a closer comparison in perspective but not in structure. Days Gone gives players a much larger open world, a customizable motorcycle, camp progression, and the spectacle of large-scale hordes.
Days Gone Remastered FAQ
Is Days Gone Remastered a separate PC game?
No. PC storefronts continue to list the base product as Days Gone. The remaster-related PC improvements arrive through the updated base game, while Broken Road supplies the new modes and enhanced Photo Mode.
What does the Broken Road DLC add?
Broken Road adds Horde Assault, Speedrun Mode, Permadeath Mode, and Enhanced Photo Mode. Horde Assault is an endless survival-arcade mode with escalating enemies, randomized supply-box weapons, Injectors, rewards, and region-based score challenges.
Does the PC version support co-op or multiplayer?
No. Days Gone is a single-player game on PC. It does not include online co-op, local co-op, split-screen play, or a multiplayer campaign.
How does Permadeath Mode work?
Permadeath Mode can apply to the entire story or to individual acts. In the whole-game setting, dying deletes the run and sends you back to the beginning. The per-act setting preserves more progress by restarting at the beginning of the current act.
Can I play with a controller?
Yes. The PC version supports keyboard and mouse as well as Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input controller configurations. Wired DualSense use is required for the full range of haptic features.
Is the PC version DRM-free?
The answer depends on the storefront. GOG lists Days Gone as DRM-free and makes Galaxy optional, while Steam and Epic use their respective storefront ecosystems. The game remains single-player regardless of platform.
