Game Description

Unknown 9: Awakening is a third-person, narrative-driven action-adventure for PC built around supernatural combat, active stealth, and possession-based abilities. The current Steam and publisher storefront identity remains Unknown 9: Awakening; no verified rename, replacement edition, or rebrand was found. Developed by Reflector Entertainment and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, it follows Haroona, a Quaestor who can enter the mysterious Fold and channel its power into the physical world.

Haroona's combat loop and perspective

The game uses a fixed third-person perspective as Haroona travels through Mauritania, India, Portugal, and other locations connected to the Unknown 9 Storyworld. Exploration connects story scenes, environmental navigation, enemy encounters, collectible Anomalies, and ability upgrades. It is structured as a focused single-player adventure rather than an open-world role-playing game or a multiplayer service.

Combat combines punches, kicks, dodges, counters, stealth takedowns, and supernatural attacks. Haroona can use Push and Pull to reposition enemies, objects, and combat situations. A distant enemy can be dragged into melee range, while a clustered group can be scattered or forced toward hazards. This gives the encounters a tactical layer beyond simply attacking the nearest target.

Haroona's signature skill is Stepping, a Fold-powered form of consciousness projection that lets her temporarily control an enemy. Possessed enemies can turn their weapons and abilities against their allies, creating openings that ordinary melee attacks cannot provide. The mechanic is most effective when you treat each opponent as a temporary tool instead of only as a target.

Players who enjoy cinematic third-person adventures with environmental puzzles and ability-gated exploration may also appreciate story-led action games such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Unknown 9: Awakening is less focused on lightsaber duels and more interested in controlling the flow of an encounter through Fold abilities.

Three approaches to enemy encounters

Unknown 9: Awakening is designed around three connected playstyles: Combat, Stealth, and Umbric abilities. You can commit to direct melee fighting, remain hidden and manipulate enemy positions, or combine the two with Fold powers. The game does not require every encounter to be solved in exactly one way.

The Ripple ability attracts enemies to a chosen location, making it useful for separating guards, grouping targets, or leading opponents toward explosive objects and other hazards. Shroud conceals Haroona from detection and can help her move through guarded areas, but its use is tied to her available Am energy. When that resource runs out, the concealment ends.

Stepping can also be chained through multiple targets with the right setup. Combat and takedowns help replenish Am and generate Stepping tokens, so aggressive play can support later ability use. A fully Fazed opponent becomes staggered and vulnerable, allowing a Burst Attack to finish the exchange with a stronger melee sequence.

Environmental interaction is part of the combat design. Haroona can use Crush to trigger certain objects from a distance, while Push, Pull, Ripple, and Stepping can alter enemy placement. The result is a combat system that rewards positioning and sequencing more than a basic light-attack combo loop.

Skill trees and exploration rewards

Optional exploration is tied to Anomalies, visible distortions connected to the Fold. Finding and absorbing them grants Gnosis Points, which can be spent across three skill-tree branches: Stealth, Combat, and Umbric Abilities.

The skill tree lets you reinforce the approach you use most often, whether that means improving Stepping, expanding stealth options, or strengthening direct attacks. The progression is not a loot-driven build system with randomized equipment. Haroona's growth comes from discovering upgrade opportunities and choosing which abilities to enhance.

Story, locations, and content model

Haroona's journey centers on the Fold, hidden knowledge, and the Ascendants, a faction seeking to use this power to change human history. The story is self-contained within the game, while the wider Unknown 9 universe extends into other formats such as podcasts, comics, novels, and web series. You can follow the main adventure without needing to consume every related entry.

The standard PC edition contains the base game. The Deluxe Edition adds the Mercenary Cosmetic Pack, Shadow Cosmetic Pack, and Aviator Cosmetic Pack. These packs provide alternative Haroona skins, journal cosmetics, and additional combat animations. They do not represent separate story chapters or new playable campaigns.

A fourth cosmetic add-on, the Quaestor Cosmetic Pack, is listed separately on Steam. The commercial structure is therefore straightforward: a paid single-player base game with optional cosmetic content, rather than a free-to-play model, recurring battle pass, or multiplayer-focused DLC program.

Who should play Unknown 9: Awakening?

This is a good fit for PC players who want a compact supernatural adventure with a clear protagonist, cinematic storytelling, and combat that mixes hand-to-hand attacks with unusual powers. It is particularly suited to players who like experimenting with stealth routes, crowd control, and enemy possession instead of relying on one attack pattern.

It is less suitable for anyone expecting a large open world, deep role-playing customization, extensive co-op, or a long-term endgame. There is no competitive multiplayer, online co-op, or split-screen mode. The core progression is the completion of Haroona's campaign, the discovery of Anomalies, and the refinement of three related skill paths.

PC features, controller support, and localization

The PC version is distributed through Steam and is listed as single-player offline. Steam features include Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. The store also lists full controller support, including Xbox controllers and USB support for DualShock and DualSense controllers, with the development team recommending a controller.

The interface, subtitles, and full audio are available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish from Spain, Arabic, and Japanese. Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Latin American Spanish, and Traditional Chinese provide interface and subtitle localization, while the Steam listing does not identify full audio for those languages.

No verified PC-specific anti-cheat requirement or separate launcher requirement is identified in the current storefront information. The Steam page does require agreement to a third-party EULA. That makes the PC version most clearly suited to players who already prefer Steam's achievement, cloud-save, and controller ecosystem.

Similar PC games and genre overlap

Unknown 9: Awakening shares its strongest mechanical overlap with third-person action adventures that combine melee encounters, stealth spaces, cinematic progression, and ability-based exploration. It is not a conventional stealth game because direct combat is equally central, and it is not a traditional action RPG because there is no equipment-driven loot economy.

For a more stealth-centered historical action experience, focused third-person assassination adventures like Assassin's Creed Mirage offer a useful comparison in terms of infiltration and guarded spaces. Players looking for stronger survival pressure and environmental stealth should consider story-driven stealth adventures such as A Plague Tale: Requiem, although Unknown 9: Awakening replaces that game's vulnerability with supernatural crowd control and possession.

The most distinctive reason to choose Unknown 9: Awakening is the way Stepping, Ripple, Shroud, and melee combat fit into the same encounter design. Players who enjoy learning a protagonist's unusual toolkit will find more to engage with here than the basic genre label suggests.

Thanks for the game ๐Ÿ˜Ž. Runs well with FSR Quality with Ryzen 5 5600, RTX 4060 and 32GB RAM on Epic Settings with ~80fps. But it always stutters a lot while auto-saving even though it is installed on NVME SSD. I hope there will be a patch for this soon. Unfortunately there is only FSR and no DLSS.
