Dreadful River is a third-person action adventure with RPG and light strategy elements, set in a fantasy realm under siege. You don’t travel by horse or airship here - you travel by raft, down a winding river, with a ruler and a small group of loyal guards trying to keep the kingdom from collapsing.

What you do in Dreadful River

You steer your raft downstream, watch your supplies, and react to danger as it appears. The river’s course is randomly generated, so a new run can take you through different landscapes and stops. Most of your time is spent on the raft, but you can pull up to shore to check out nearby settlements, trade, and look for help. If you enjoy fishing and eerie ocean voyages like in DREDGE, this river journey offers similar tension.

Survive the river, weather, and night

The day and night cycle matters. Darkness makes threats harder to spot, and the weather can complicate things when you’re trying to keep everyone alive. It’s the kind of journey where you’re fine one minute, then suddenly you’re asking: “Was that movement on the shore?”

Combat choices: fight or slip by

Ambushes can come from the shore or the water. Enemies include archers, javelin throwers, and battle mages, among other threats. When trouble shows up, you choose your approach. Do you charge in for a dynamic skirmish, or try to avoid the fight and float past while they’re sleeping? Either way, your crew and your stored goods are on the line.

Crew, progression, and raft upgrades

You manage and grow a team that protects the ruler. As you progress, you gather supplies, find equipment, and collect crafting materials. You can improve abilities and gear, and you can also upgrade the raft itself - including increasing crew capacity and adding siege engines. New crew members can be hired at riverside settlements and mercenary camps, with roles such as Archers, Mages, and Spearmen (and more you discover along the way). Story hook and mysteries

The journey is tied to an invasion, an unknown sickness, and legends around otherworldly stones and the “Tales of the fallen Stars”. You’re searching for hope - and for answers - while trying not to get wiped out on the way.
