Game Description
Halo: Campaign Evolved on PC is a first-person science-fiction shooter and ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved. The current storefront name is simply Halo: Campaign Evolved; no separate rebrand or replacement title is used on Steam, Xbox PC, or the official Halo channels. It rebuilds the original campaign with modern presentation, refined controls, three additional missions, expanded weapon and vehicle options, and a much larger Skull modifier system.
This is a focused campaign product rather than a full competitive multiplayer package. Its main appeal is a replayable story campaign that works solo or in online co-op, with enough optional modifiers to make familiar encounters play very differently on later runs.
A faithful campaign with room to improvise
The core structure follows Master Chief and Cortana after their arrival on the mysterious Halo ringworld. The campaign combines military science fiction, exploration, vehicle combat, and arena-style firefights as the UNSC survivors confront the Covenant and uncover the ring's catastrophic purpose.
Combat remains built around the classic Halo rhythm of recharging shields, health management, weapon swapping, grenade placement, and movement through open encounter spaces. Enemies occupy different tactical roles, so success depends on target priority and positioning rather than simply holding the trigger.
The remake adds enhanced mobility and more responsive targeting while preserving the sandbox-driven decision-making associated with Combat Evolved. Sprint is available, but players can disable it through the game's options if they prefer a more traditional pace.
Vehicles are more flexible than in the original campaign. Players can hijack enemy vehicles, place four Spartans in a Warthog, and pilot the Covenant Wraith tank, adding new solutions to missions that longtime players already know.
New missions and an expanded arsenal
The campaign contains the ten original story missions plus three new missions in the prequel arc Operation: METEORITE. Set before the original adventure, this storyline follows Master Chief and Sergeant Avery Johnson during an infiltration of a Covenant agricultural ship orbiting the glassed human colony of Promise.
Operation: METEORITE adds new environments, enemies, characters, and story context. The missions involve Sacristan warriors, UNSC marines, Covenant experiments, and intelligence connected to High Charity, giving the remake original material without replacing the central Halo: Combat Evolved journey.
The sandbox also includes nine additional weapons drawn from later Halo games. The Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, Needle Rifle, and Brute Plasma Rifle are among the weapons that can appear in the rebuilt campaign, creating new tactical combinations without turning the game into a traditional class-based shooter.
Weapon variety matters because Halo's encounters are designed around improvisation. A player may begin with a precision rifle, switch to a Covenant energy weapon against shields, grab a shotgun for close quarters, or use a vehicle to reshape the battlefield.
Skulls, mastery, and Campaign Remix
Skulls are hidden campaign collectibles that unlock optional modifiers for future missions. Halo: Campaign Evolved includes 39 collectible Skulls across its 13 missions, plus three additional modifiers that become available through Campaign Remix.
The complete system contains 42 Skulls, including returning effects such as Black Eye, Mythic, Famine, Catch, Boom, Cowbell, Grunt Funeral, Bandana, and Grunt Birthday Party. New modifiers can alter perspective, ammunition behavior, movement rules, visibility, vehicle durability, and enemy encounters.
Collecting any three Skulls unlocks Campaign Remix. This mode revisits completed missions with randomized enemy factions, remixed weapon pickups, optional visibility effects, and selectable Skull combinations. Adaptation, Reload, and Armistice are built into the Remix rules, changing enemy composition, weapon availability, and faction behavior.
The result is not a roguelike campaign with permanent character builds. It is a mission remix system designed for experimentation, challenge runs, cooperative chaos, and repeated mastery of familiar spaces.
What each PC edition includes
The Standard Edition contains the complete campaign experience, including the original-story missions, Operation: METEORITE, Campaign Remix, the Skull collection, and online co-op functionality.
The Premium Edition adds the Alpha Halo Armory Pack with five Master Chief armor skins and six weapon skins. It also includes a digital artbook, the Halo: Hungry Buzzards digital short story by Troy Denning, and a digital game manual based on the original Halo: Combat Evolved manual.
The Premium Edition content is primarily cosmetic and supplemental. The core missions, combat systems, co-op campaign, and replay modifiers are part of the base game rather than being divided across a season pass or a large collection of paid expansions.
PC players using PC Game Pass receive the Standard Edition through the subscription, while a separate Premium Edition Upgrade is available for the additional cosmetic and digital extras. Xbox Play Anywhere also connects Xbox console ownership with the Xbox app and Microsoft Store PC versions through the same Microsoft account.
Co-op and the real PC multiplayer picture
Online campaign co-op supports up to four players across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Cross-play and cross-progression allow a linked squad to continue its campaign progress across supported platforms.
PC split-screen is not supported. Two-player split-screen is limited to console versions, so PC groups should plan on using online co-op rather than sharing one local display.
A Microsoft account with an associated Xbox gamertag is required on Steam and the Xbox PC versions. Steam players must complete a one-time online account-linking process, after which the single-player campaign can be played offline. Co-op naturally requires an online connection.
Players who want a broader Halo package with competitive multiplayer, Forge creation tools, and a separate live multiplayer ecosystem should compare it with the open-world Halo shooter experience of Halo Infinite rather than treating Campaign Evolved as a replacement for that package.
PC controls, display options, and localization
The PC version supports keyboard and mouse controls, custom control binding, and full controller support. Its interface also includes adjustable text size, subtitle options, color alternatives, narrated menus, contrast controls, and other accessibility settings.
PC graphics options include field-of-view controls, resolution scaling, multiple upscaling techniques, frame-generation options where supported, and vendor-specific latency reduction features. The Steam version additionally supports Intel XeSS, while the Xbox app and Microsoft Store PC versions use a different feature set.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is available with interface and subtitle localization in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Latin American Spanish. Full audio coverage is available in fewer languages than the complete text list.
Players comparing PC storefronts should also account for the account-linking requirement and the Play Anywhere distinction. Steam ownership and Xbox PC ownership are managed through different storefront ecosystems, even though campaign progression can follow the linked Microsoft account.
Who should play Halo: Campaign Evolved?
This remake suits players who want a story-first sci-fi shooter with readable enemy roles, vehicle sections, open combat arenas, and a campaign that rewards experimentation. It is especially relevant to newcomers seeking a modern entry point into Halo's original story.
Returning players get the most value from the new missions, later-series weapons, hijacking, Wraith access, expanded Skulls, and Campaign Remix. Those additions preserve the recognizable campaign structure while providing reasons to revisit missions beyond a single completion.
It is less suitable for players primarily looking for ranked competition, Forge, a large multiplayer suite, or extensive character progression. The experience is centered on campaign combat and cooperative replay, not a persistent multiplayer service.
For another PC shooter built around weapon switching, aggressive movement, and combat-resource decisions, the high-speed demon-slaying structure of DOOM Eternal is a stronger comparison than a cover-based military shooter.
Similar PC games
Halo: Campaign Evolved shares its strongest mechanical DNA with other first-person action shooters, but its balance is distinctive. It gives players time to read an encounter, exploit enemy weaknesses, commandeer vehicles, and use the environment before escalating the fight.
Players seeking cooperative squad combat with heavier positioning demands can also consider Gears of War, although its third-person cover system produces a slower, more defensive rhythm than Halo's shield-based movement and open arenas.
Compared with those alternatives, Campaign Evolved stands out through its combination of vehicle sandbox combat, enemy faction interplay, flexible weapon pickups, campaign co-op, and optional Skull rules that can transform the same mission without requiring a separate character build.
