Game Description

Yakuza Kiwami on PC is a story-driven action-adventure beat 'em up set in Kamurocho, SEGA's remake of the first Yakuza game. On Steam, the current listing is separate from Yakuza Kiwami (Legacy): it keeps the same basic game content while adding text-language support, and legacy save data does not transfer.

The result is a compact crime drama built around street fights, character-focused storytelling, side cases, minigames, and the slow reconstruction of Kazuma Kiryu's reputation. It is primarily a single-player experience with no co-op campaign or competitive multiplayer layer.

Kiryu's Return to Kamurocho

The story follows Kiryu after a decade in prison for a murder he did not commit. Returning to a Kamurocho he no longer recognizes, he becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving the Tojo Clan, a missing ten billion yen, his former sworn brother Akira Nishikiyama, and a mysterious girl named Haruka.

Yakuza Kiwami expands the original story with additional scenes and character material designed to connect it more closely to the modern series. The tone shifts constantly between serious underworld drama, personal tragedy, and deliberately eccentric street-level comedy.

That contrast is central to the game's identity. A main chapter may deal with betrayal and organized crime, while the next optional encounter asks Kiryu to help a stranger, settle a neighborhood dispute, or navigate one of Kamurocho's stranger distractions.

Four Combat Styles and Heat Actions

Combat uses four named styles: Brawler for balanced hand-to-hand fighting, Rush for speed and evasive movement, Beast for heavy attacks and environmental weapons, and the Dragon of Dojima style that represents Kiryu's signature technique set.

Switching styles during a fight is more than a visual flourish. Different approaches suit different enemy groups, spaces, and openings. Kiryu can also pick up everyday objects and use them as weapons, turning the surroundings into part of the encounter rather than treating each street as a featureless arena.

Successful attacks build Heat, enabling powerful Heat Actions that use nearby objects, enemy positioning, and specific combat situations. The game also includes Climax Heat Mode and the Essence of Kiwami, giving advanced players additional reasons to manage timing, recovery, and resource expenditure instead of relying on basic attacks.

Progression improves Kiryu's health, abilities, and combat options through an upgrade structure that rewards both story advancement and optional activity. The combat is accessible at a basic level, but higher difficulties and tougher encounters expose the value of style switching, positioning, guarding, and Heat management.

Majima Everywhere and the Side-Activity Loop

Goro Majima is not limited to his role in the main plot. Through Majima Everywhere, the Mad Dog of Shimano repeatedly appears around Kamurocho and challenges Kiryu in unpredictable situations. These encounters turn a familiar traversal route into a recurring combat and progression loop.

Majima's presence also reinforces one of Kiwami's defining rhythms: move through the city, gather information, complete a story objective, get interrupted by a fight or side story, and decide whether to continue the critical path or spend time mastering optional systems.

Kamurocho includes substories, restaurants, shops, arcades, karaoke, billiards, casino games, mahjong, Pocket Circuit, and MesuKing: Battle Bug Beauties. These activities are not all equally substantial, but together they make the district feel like a place Kiryu inhabits rather than a sequence of mission corridors.

Players who enjoy a crime story mixed with dense urban exploration may also find the undercover-brawler structure of open-city gangster action such as Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition familiar, although Yakuza Kiwami places much more emphasis on authored character drama and minigame variety than on driving.

What the Current PC Edition Includes

The current Steam edition is a paid single-player game, not a free-to-play service. The storefront describes it as the updated version of Yakuza Kiwami (Legacy), with no difference in basic game content or specifications beyond the additional text languages. Players who already own the legacy version may see a discounted upgrade option, but the two versions use separate save data.

Japanese is the only full-audio language listed for the current Steam edition. Interface and subtitle support covers English, French, Italian, German, Spanish from Spain, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

The commercial distinction matters for returning PC players. Searching for the older title may lead to references to Yakuza Kiwami (Legacy), while new Steam users are directed toward the current Yakuza Kiwami listing. The safest way to identify the intended edition is to check the exact title and its expanded language list before starting a new playthrough.

Who Should Play Yakuza Kiwami?

Yakuza Kiwami suits players who want a story-first brawler with a strong central protagonist, a memorable supporting cast, and a city packed with diversions. It is also a practical entry point for players who want to follow Kiryu's main story from its beginning, although Yakuza 0 provides useful prequel context and introduces several characters in a different period of their lives.

The game is less suitable for players seeking a seamless open-world sandbox, a traditional party-based RPG, or a combat system built around constant weapon variety. Much of the experience is tightly directed, random street fights can interrupt exploration, and the older structure is more compact and segmented than later open-world action games.

For a broader Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio comparison, the period crime drama and dual-protagonist combat of Yakuza 0 offers a more elaborate introduction to the series' style, while Kiwami focuses on Kiryu's first major chapter and the consequences of his return.

PC Features and Everyday Play

The PC version is distributed through Steam and includes Steam Cloud, Steam Achievements, Steam Trading Cards, and Family Sharing support. It is designed for single-player use, with the storefront listing Japanese full audio and the expanded subtitle and interface options described above.

There is no official indication of a separate PC-only campaign, built-in co-op mode, or dedicated online ecosystem. The main reasons to choose PC are the convenience of the Steam platform, modern display and input flexibility, the current language coverage, and access to the complete Kamurocho experience in one desktop release.

Players who want detective mechanics layered over the same kind of urban brawling can compare it with the investigation-heavy beat 'em up design of Lost Judgment. That comparison highlights Kiwami's narrower focus: Kiryu is not solving cases through forensic tools or surveillance systems; he is rebuilding his place in the city through combat, loyalty, and persistence.

Yakuza Kiwami FAQ

Is the current Steam game different from Yakuza Kiwami (Legacy)?

Yes, Steam treats them as separate listings. The current Yakuza Kiwami includes additional interface and subtitle languages, but SEGA states that the basic game content and specifications are otherwise the same. Save data from Yakuza Kiwami (Legacy) does not carry over.

Is Yakuza Kiwami a remake or a remaster?

It is a remake of the original Yakuza, rebuilding the first game's presentation and combat while expanding story material and adding content associated with the modern series.

Does Yakuza Kiwami have multiplayer or co-op on PC?

No. The current Steam listing identifies Yakuza Kiwami as a single-player game. Its substories, minigames, Majima Everywhere encounters, and combat progression are designed for solo play.

What combat styles are available?

Kiryu can use Brawler, Rush, Beast, and Dragon of Dojima. Each style emphasizes a different approach, from balanced strikes and rapid movement to heavy attacks and Kiryu's signature techniques.

What languages are supported on PC?

The current Steam edition supports twelve interface and subtitle languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish from Spain, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Japanese is listed as the full-audio language.

Is Yakuza Kiwami a good starting point for the series?

It is a valid starting point if you want to follow Kiryu's main story from its first chapter. Yakuza 0 is a prequel with more elaborate character setup, but Kiwami directly establishes the relationships, conflicts, and setting that shape much of Kiryu's later journey.
