Game Description
Prey on PC is a first-person immersive sim set aboard Talos I, a corporate space station overrun by the alien Typhon. Developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, it combines exploration, survival horror, environmental problem-solving, role-playing progression, and flexible combat. The current Steam listing still uses the name Prey; there is no verified storefront rebrand or replacement edition.
Talos I and the immersive-sim gameplay loop
You play as Morgan Yu, a TranStar employee who wakes up inside a station where familiar objects may conceal hostile Mimics. The central loop is deliberately investigative: search offices, laboratories, crew quarters, and maintenance areas; read emails and audio logs; collect materials; study the station’s layout; and decide how to deal with the Typhon blocking your route.
Prey is not an open-world game in the conventional sense. Talos I is a large, interconnected environment with non-linear routes, locked areas, optional objectives, and backtracking. A blocked door may have several solutions involving hacking, repair, leverage, a hidden passage, a maintenance hatch, or a carefully used ability.
Combat is only one part of survival. The wrench is useful when ammunition is limited, while firearms, grenades, the GLOO Cannon, and environmental hazards create different answers to the same encounter. Players who enjoy space-station immersive sims such as System Shock 2 will recognize the emphasis on resource management, research, logs, and dangerous exploration.
Neuromods, Mimic Matter, and player-built abilities
Neuromods form the main progression system. They unlock human abilities across categories such as Science, Engineering, and Security, allowing Morgan to improve hacking, repair, medical knowledge, weapon handling, inventory capacity, strength, and movement. This system supports distinct builds without forcing a single class selection at the beginning.
After Morgan gains access to the Psychoscope, the game expands into Typhon research and alien abilities. Mimic Matter lets Morgan transform into selected objects, opening compact routes, creating stealth opportunities, and turning ordinary furniture into a traversal tool. Other Typhon powers provide offensive, defensive, mobility, or control options.
The choice between human and Typhon abilities is more than a simple good-versus-evil upgrade path. Installing alien Neuromods affects how certain station systems and turrets identify Morgan, while the available abilities change the way rooms, enemies, and locked spaces can be approached. The result is a build system tied directly to exploration and narrative tension.
The station’s ecology also matters. Mimics can imitate everyday objects, while larger Typhon such as Phantoms, Technopaths, Telepaths, and the Nightmare create different combat priorities. The Psychoscope helps Morgan research enemies, identify weaknesses, and make better use of weapons such as the GLOO Cannon, Q-Beam, and Nullwave Transmitter.
Story structure and meaningful exploration
Prey builds its mystery through environmental clues rather than constant exposition. Morgan’s apartment, TranStar records, staff messages, laboratories, and abandoned workspaces gradually reveal what happened aboard Talos I and why Morgan’s memories cannot be trusted.
Many side objectives involve locating survivors, recovering research, restoring station systems, or deciding how much risk to accept. These tasks are not isolated checklist activities: they often reveal alternate routes, useful resources, personal histories, or information that changes the context of the main objective.
The game also tracks how Morgan treats people and the station. Rescue decisions, optional investigations, ability choices, and the condition of key characters can influence the broader outcome. Prey does not present every consequence as a dramatic dialogue prompt, so careful exploration is often more important than waiting for an obvious moral choice.
Base game, Mooncrash, and Typhon Hunter
The standard PC release is a single-player campaign centered on Morgan Yu and Talos I. Its progression is built around one persistent story run, with exploration, resource gathering, Neuromod investment, crafting, research, and multiple possible approaches to objectives.
Mooncrash is a separate paid expansion rather than a short extra mission pack. It moves the setting to the Pytheas lunar facility and uses a more replay-oriented structure with changing conditions, randomized elements, multiple playable characters, and different escape objectives. It is best understood as a distinct challenge built from Prey’s systems.
Typhon Hunter is a separate multiplayer mode associated with the Digital Deluxe package. It is not cooperative campaign play. One player controls Morgan while other players take the form of Mimics, creating a hide-and-seek contest that uses the recognizable object-disguise mechanic in a competitive format.
Who should play Prey on PC?
Prey is a strong fit for players who want systemic exploration, environmental puzzles, first-person role-playing, science-fiction horror, and freedom to improvise. It rewards people who search desks, read station records, test unusual abilities, and revisit earlier areas after gaining new tools.
It is less suitable for players seeking a linear action shooter with constant combat, a conventional open-world map, or a straightforward upgrade path. The opening can feel vulnerable, ammunition and healing items require management, and some objectives expect the player to notice clues rather than follow a perfectly marked route.
The game is also a good choice for players who prefer replaying missions with different builds. A Morgan focused on hacking and engineering plays differently from one using heavy weapons, stealth, leverage, or Typhon abilities. The campaign’s strongest moments come from combining systems rather than selecting a single optimal skill tree.
PC features, language support, and storefront details
The current Steam edition is listed as a single-player PC game with Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, Steam Trading Cards, Family Sharing, and Remote Play on TV. The storefront also lists a playable demo and requires agreement to a third-party EULA.
Steam lists interface and subtitle support in 11 languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. Full audio is listed for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Japanese.
There is no separate current Steam name such as a definitive edition or remastered edition replacing the original listing. Players searching for “Prey 2017 PC” are looking for the Arkane-developed game, not the earlier title with the same name. The publisher, developer, Morgan Yu, Talos I, and the Typhon remain the clearest identifiers.
Comparable PC games
Prey shares Arkane’s player-choice philosophy with first-person stealth sandboxes such as Dishonored 2, especially in its use of powers, alternate routes, environmental opportunities, and flexible encounters. The settings and progression systems differ, but both games reward experimentation over one prescribed solution.
Its closest structural relatives are immersive sims that combine readable spaces, upgrade systems, logs, resource decisions, and multiple solutions. It also overlaps with narrative science-fiction shooters and survival horror, but its defining feature is the way exploration, abilities, crafting, and enemy research operate together inside one connected station.
Prey PC FAQ
Is Prey on PC still called Prey?
Yes. The current Steam listing uses Prey, with Arkane Studios as developer and Bethesda Softworks as publisher. “Prey 2017” is a useful search phrase for distinguishing it from the earlier game that shares the title, but it is not a current rebrand.
Does the base game include Mooncrash?
No. The main single-player campaign and Mooncrash are separate products. Steam also lists a Digital Deluxe package containing Prey, Mooncrash, and Typhon Hunter.
Does Prey have campaign co-op?
No. The main Morgan Yu campaign is single-player. Typhon Hunter is a separate competitive multiplayer mode and does not turn the story campaign into cooperative play.
Can Morgan use alien powers?
Yes. After obtaining the Psychoscope, Morgan can research Typhon and unlock alien Neuromods, including Mimic Matter. These powers expand traversal, stealth, combat, and problem-solving options, while also affecting how some station defenses respond to Morgan.
Is Prey a conventional open-world game?
No. Talos I is a large, interconnected space station with non-linear areas, optional routes, locked spaces, and backtracking. Its structure is closer to a connected immersive-sim environment than a sprawling outdoor open world.
What makes the PC version distinctive?
The PC storefront version supports Steam Cloud, Achievements, Trading Cards, Family Sharing, Remote Play on TV, and a demo. It also offers broad interface, subtitle, and audio localization, while the campaign remains focused on single-player exploration and systemic problem-solving.
