Game Description

Dungeons 3 is a PC dungeon-management strategy game that combines underground base building with real-time strategy combat on the overworld. The current Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and Kalypso Media listings continue to use the name Dungeons 3; no verified rebrand or replacement edition has superseded the original title.

Developed by Realmforge Studios and published by Kalypso Media, it is best understood as a hybrid of dungeon simulation, real-time strategy, economy management, and tower defense. You build for the forces of evil, command creatures, corrupt the surface world, and protect your Dungeonheart from invading heroes.

Two layers of strategy

The defining structure is the contrast between the underground dungeon and the overworld. Below ground, you carve out rooms, assign functions to your creatures, expand your economy, and prepare defenses. Above ground, your forces wait for direct orders as you capture territory, destroy settlements, and push back the forces of good.

The underground layer is more managerial. Little Snots dig passages and perform labor while creatures use rooms for recruitment, training, research, rest, and resource production. Room placement matters because your dungeon must support both its workforce and its military. A badly organized base can slow production just when a hero assault is approaching.

Gold supports construction and operations, while mana powers supernatural abilities. Evilness is another central resource, generated through control of overworld locations and other villainous activities. Managing these resources creates the main pressure loop: expand the dungeon, recruit stronger units, unlock new options, then take the fight outside before your economy stalls.

Rooms, creatures, traps, and spells

Dungeons 3 gives the player a broad set of rooms and structures for shaping an evil headquarters. Functional spaces support different parts of the economy, while specialized rooms help unlock or improve units, traps, doors, and abilities. The result is not a decorative builder. Every room has a practical role in keeping your dungeon productive.

Your army draws from several themed factions and creature types, including orcs, demons, and undead. Each group contributes different strengths, so a reliable force depends on more than simply recruiting the newest unit available. The Dungeon Lord can also intervene directly, including picking up creatures in the dungeon and disciplining idle workers with the infamous Evil Hand.

Defensive planning is equally important. Traps, doors, rooms, and narrow passages can turn the route to the Dungeonheart into a controlled killing ground. Spells provide emergency power when an attack breaks through or when an overworld battle needs an immediate advantage. Players who enjoy designing defensive layouts will find more depth here than in a conventional RTS base.

The overworld RTS layer

When your army leaves the dungeon, the game changes tempo. Creatures no longer behave like autonomous workers waiting for tasks; they become a field force that needs direct movement and attack commands. You capture strategic locations, gather additional resources, destroy heroic settlements, and expand the reach of Absolute Evil across the map.

This split is one of the game's most important player-intent details. Dungeons 3 is not a pure Dungeon Keeper-style management sandbox, and it is not a conventional fantasy RTS either. The overworld asks you to balance army control with the needs of the dungeon, often forcing you to decide whether to reinforce the front line or return attention to a vulnerable Dungeonheart.

The overworld also uses real-time tactical orders rather than turn-based combat. Positioning, unit selection, target priority, and timing matter, but the game remains more accessible than a faction-heavy competitive RTS. The emphasis is on maintaining momentum between conquest and dungeon development.

Campaign, skirmish, and multiplayer

The main campaign follows Thalya, a dark elf priestess recruited to lead the forces of evil under the Dungeon Lord's direction. It contains a substantial sequence of story missions with voiced narration, comedy, and objectives that introduce the game's rooms, creatures, and overworld systems gradually.

Outside the campaign, Skirmish provides randomly generated maps for players who want a less scripted experience. You can configure a sandbox-style match, build a dungeon, develop an army, and attempt to dominate the surface. Randomized levels are particularly useful for extending the management loop after the campaign objectives are complete.

PC players also get online multiplayer. Publisher materials describe two-player co-op for campaign and skirmish-style play, while competitive multiplayer supports up to four players on a map. In competitive matches, each player has a separate dungeon and fights over the connected overworld rather than simply invading another player's underground base.

Content model and Complete Collection

Dungeons 3 is a paid base game with optional paid expansions rather than a free-to-play service. The current Steam Complete Collection bundles the base game with seven named DLC packs and the original soundtrack, for nine items in total.

The seven gameplay-related additions are Once Upon a Time, Evil of the Caribbean, Lord of the Kings, Clash of Gods, An Unexpected DLC, Famous Last Words, and A Multitude of Maps. They add extra missions, scenarios, maps, or themed content rather than replacing the main game with a separate rebrand.

The base game already contains the core campaign, skirmish structure, dungeon management systems, overworld RTS play, and multiplayer features. The Complete Collection is mainly relevant to players who want the broadest set of missions and additional scenarios in one purchase.

PC features, storefronts, and localization

The PC version supports full controller support, Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, Steam Remote Play on TV, and cross-platform multiplayer on the Steam listing. Keyboard and mouse remain a natural fit for room placement, unit selection, and simultaneous management, but controller support makes the game more approachable from a living-room setup.

Storefront behavior depends on where you buy it. The Steam edition uses the Steam client and includes a third-party EULA. The GOG release is listed as DRM-free and supports offline installation without requiring GOG Galaxy. Epic Games Store availability is also listed, with the relevant platform client handling ownership and launch.

The current Steam storefront lists interface and subtitle support for English, French, German, Simplified Chinese, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Czech, and Japanese. Full audio is available in English, French, German, Russian, Italian, and Spanish. No anti-cheat system is listed as a core feature on the current PC storefront information.

Who should play Dungeons 3?

Dungeons 3 is a strong fit for players who want base building with active combat, enjoy managing an unusual economy, or like the idea of playing the villain in a fantasy strategy game. It rewards planning room layouts, learning which creatures support each other, and switching attention between defense and conquest.

It is less suitable for players seeking a pure city builder, a highly competitive esports RTS, or a dungeon simulator that never leaves the underground. The overworld is not an optional side activity; it is half of the design. Players who dislike direct army control or the constant movement between dungeon and surface may find the structure demanding.

Related PC games

The closest appeal comes from games that combine strategic control with fantasy dungeon action. Players looking for a more direct, loot-focused approach to isometric dungeon combat can compare it with co-op isometric dungeon action RPGs such as Minecraft Dungeons, although that game does not share Dungeons 3's management and overworld-conquest systems.

For a closer structural comparison, Dungeons 4 is the obvious series successor, while traditional Dungeon Keeper-style games emphasize underground construction more heavily. Dungeons 3 sits between those extremes: it gives you a real dungeon economy, but repeatedly asks you to convert that preparation into overworld military pressure.
