Advanced battles add Awakening, Dragon Force, and Mode Change. The Awakening Gauge fills as characters take damage, then can be spent to greatly improve statistics, restore resources, unlock special magic, or strengthen elemental compatibility. Certain characters use Dragon Force or Mode Change instead of a standard Awakening.

Breaking an enemy with a sufficiently powerful hit prevents it from acting on its next turn and makes attacks against it critical. When several characters are Awakened or transformed, a Magic Chain can become a Unison Raid. Specific story-linked pairs, including Gray and Juvia, can trigger special versions of these combined attacks.

Guild progression gives the campaign its identity
