Game Description
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is a third-person open-world fantasy action RPG for PC, built around fast hack-and-slash combat, flexible character development, and a large quest-driven world. Current PC storefronts use the exact Re-Reckoning name; Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is the legacy title for the original game, not a separate modern rebrand. The remaster was developed by KAIKO with Big Huge Games and 38 Studios credited for the original, and published by THQ Nordic.
The main draw is control over how the Fateless One fights and develops. Amalur combines the scale and quest structure of a western RPG with more immediate, ability-focused combat than a traditional menu-driven role-playing game.
Combat built around player-defined archetypes
Combat takes place from a close third-person perspective, with light and heavy attacks, blocks, dodges, weapon combinations, spells, and active abilities working together in real time. The game supports a wide range of weapons, including swords, greatswords, hammers, daggers, faeblades, bows, staffs, sceptres, and chakrams, giving each build a distinct rhythm rather than simply changing damage values.
The defining combat resource is Fate. Successful attacks and defeated enemies build the meter, allowing the player to enter Reckoning Mode. This temporarily shifts the fight in the hero’s favor and can end with a dramatic Fateshift kill that deals with a target while rewarding the player with additional experience. It is most useful when saved for elite enemies, crowded encounters, or a difficult boss phase.
Amalur is not built around a fixed warrior, rogue, or mage selection at character creation. Instead, the player invests in the Might, Finesse, and Sorcery paths, mixing weapon skills, stealth-oriented abilities, elemental magic, defensive talents, and passive bonuses. This makes hybrid characters practical, and the Destiny system turns those investments into evolving archetypes that can be reshaped as the build changes.
Destiny, crafting, and character flexibility
The Destiny system is the game’s answer to rigid class design. A player can begin with a heavy weapon build, experiment with finesse abilities, then move toward a spell-focused setup without starting a new character. That flexibility is especially valuable because the world regularly supplies new weapons, armour pieces, accessories, and crafting materials.
Blacksmithing, alchemy, and sagecrafting give exploration a practical purpose. Blacksmithing focuses on equipment creation and improvement, alchemy turns gathered ingredients into consumables, and sagecrafting produces gems that can enhance gear. The systems are not mandatory for every playstyle, but they give completionists and build-focused players more control than relying entirely on random loot.
Quest choices are present, but Re-Reckoning is primarily a content-rich action RPG rather than a consequence-heavy simulation. The strongest reason to explore is the combination of faction storylines, dungeon encounters, lore, treasure, and build experimentation. Players who enjoy a broad fantasy sandbox but prefer direct combat may also appreciate the more deliberate exploration and role-playing structure found in open-world fantasy RPGs such as Skyrim Special Edition.
A large single-player journey through Amalur
The campaign follows the Fateless One, a character resurrected through the Well of Souls and placed at the center of a conflict that threatens the Faelands. The setting moves between regions such as Dalentarth, the city of Rathir, Klurikon, and the Brigand Hall Caverns, with each area combining main quests, faction content, side missions, caves, ruins, and smaller discoveries.
Faction quests are one of the better reasons to leave the main path. They introduce groups with their own identities, political tensions, magical traditions, and combat scenarios. Side quests also cover a wider range of tones than the central war narrative, including intrigue, romance, folklore, humour, and morally uncomfortable decisions.
This is a strictly single-player experience. There is no online co-op, local co-op, competitive multiplayer, or split-screen campaign. The structure is designed for solo progression, so players should approach it as a long-form personal RPG rather than a party-based adventure.
What the editions contain
The PC storefront lineup is easier to understand when the editions are separated. The standard version is the core Re-Reckoning package and includes the remaster’s main adventure alongside the original-release add-on content associated with the game. The FATE Edition adds the Fatesworn expansion and the official soundtrack.
Fatesworn continues the story after the main conflict and takes the Fateless One into the mountainous region of Mithros. It adds a new storyline, new quests, new enemies, Chaos Realm dungeons, new equipment, a Chaos-focused gameplay mechanic, and an increased level ceiling. It requires the base game when purchased separately.
Fatesworn also matters for players interested in post-campaign challenges. The added Arena Mode becomes available through Fatesworn content and sends the player through escalating enemy rounds in dedicated arena locations. It is a late-game combat loop rather than a replacement for the main quest, making it most relevant to players who want another reason to refine a build after finishing the story.
PC features, input, and storefront differences
Re-Reckoning is a Windows PC release with full controller support alongside keyboard and mouse input. Controller play suits the game’s direct attack, dodge, block, and ability layout, while mouse and keyboard remain useful for inventory management and menu navigation. Steam lists Steam Cloud, achievements, Family Sharing, Steam Trading Cards, and Remote Play on Tablet.
The PC version also includes ultrawide support and an adjustable field-of-view option, two features specifically confirmed by THQ Nordic. These settings are useful for players who found the original camera too close or restrictive. The game does not have official modding tools; the developer stated that making the underlying data more accessible was being considered, but Re-Reckoning should not be treated as a mod-driven platform.
Storefront DRM is not identical across PC versions. The Steam release uses the Steam ecosystem, while the GOG edition is advertised as DRM-free and does not require GOG Galaxy to install or play offline. That distinction is useful for players choosing between a connected platform library and a standalone PC installation.
Steam lists interface and subtitle support in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, and Simplified Chinese. Full audio is listed for English, French, and German, so players should not assume that every supported text language also includes voiced dialogue.
Who should play Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning?
Re-Reckoning suits players who want a combat-first western RPG with extensive side content, a colourful high-fantasy setting, flexible builds, and a forgiving approach to experimentation. It is particularly strong for players who enjoy collecting equipment, testing weapon types, completing faction questlines, and revisiting character progression whenever a new idea seems more appealing.
It is a weaker fit for players seeking a tightly authored narrative where every dialogue decision dramatically reshapes the world. The game also lacks multiplayer and official mod tools, and its quest-heavy structure can feel repetitive if the appeal of exploration, loot, and build tinkering wears off.
Players looking for a more narrative-led fantasy RPG with a heavier emphasis on authored quests and consequential decisions may prefer story-rich open-world adventures such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Re-Reckoning is more focused on action flow, character experimentation, and the satisfaction of clearing another dungeon or testing another Destiny combination.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning FAQ
Is Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning the same game as Reckoning?
It is the remastered version of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the earlier single-player action RPG. Current PC storefronts use the Re-Reckoning title, while Reckoning remains the legacy name used for the original release and older catalog pages.
Does Re-Reckoning include Fatesworn?
The standard edition and FATE Edition are separate listings. The FATE Edition includes the base game, the Fatesworn expansion, and the official soundtrack. Fatesworn can also be purchased separately, but it requires the base game.
Does Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning have multiplayer?
No. Re-Reckoning is a single-player RPG with no online co-op, local co-op, split-screen, or competitive multiplayer mode.
Can you change your class after starting?
There is no permanent starting class in the usual sense. The Destiny system lets you develop Might, Finesse, and Sorcery abilities in different combinations, allowing hybrid builds and substantial character experimentation during a playthrough.
Does the PC version support ultrawide monitors?
Yes. THQ Nordic confirmed ultrawide support and a field-of-view slider for the PC version. These options are separate from graphical quality settings and are intended to give PC players more control over the camera presentation.
Does it support mods?
There are no official modding tools. The developer discussed making game data easier to access, but the game was not designed as a straightforward modding platform.
Is the GOG version DRM-free?
Yes. GOG lists the PC edition as DRM-free and states that GOG Galaxy is optional. Steam remains the platform-based alternative with Steam Cloud, achievements, Family Sharing, Trading Cards, and Remote Play on Tablet.
