Game Description

Planet Zoo on PC is a detailed zoo management and construction simulation from Frontier Developments, the studio behind Planet Coaster and Jurassic World Evolution. The current storefront still uses the name Planet Zoo, with no verified rebrand or replacement edition. Its central challenge is balancing animal welfare, guest satisfaction, staff logistics, conservation, and creative habitat design in a living 3D zoo.

The game is built for players who want more than a simple tycoon loop. You can create a carefully managed wildlife park, spend hours refining individual habitats, or use the construction tools as a freeform architectural sandbox.

Build habitats around real animal needs

Planet Zoo combines piece-by-piece construction with species-specific care systems. Habitats are not decorative boxes. Animals need suitable terrain, vegetation, water, shelter, space, enrichment, and compatible social conditions, so every enclosure becomes a practical design problem as well as a visual project.

The zoomable 3D construction camera lets you shape the land, dig lakes and rivers, raise hills, place rocks and foliage, and assemble structures from hundreds of components. Paths, barriers, viewing areas, staff facilities, and guest amenities all need to work together. A beautiful habitat can still fail if keepers cannot reach it, guests cannot see it, or the animal welfare requirements are incomplete.

Players who enjoy elaborate park construction will find a similar creative foundation in dinosaur park management games such as Jurassic World Evolution 2, although Planet Zoo places more emphasis on natural habitats, breeding, conservation, and welfare than on containing dangerous prehistoric animals.

Animal welfare, genetics, and conservation

Animals in Planet Zoo are individual creatures with their own appearance, traits, needs, and behavior. The management layer reaches beyond feeding and cleaning. You research species, improve veterinary care, monitor welfare, manage disease risks, and adjust habitats as animals mature or social groups change.

Breeding and genetics create a longer-term progression loop. You can raise new generations, consider inherited traits, manage population sizes, and release suitable animals back into the wild. This gives the game a conservation-focused identity rather than treating animals as interchangeable income sources.

Animal welfare also affects the wider zoo. Stress, poor habitat conditions, overcrowding, and unsuitable layouts can reduce the quality of the experience for both animals and visitors. The result is a management game where visual creativity and operational decisions constantly influence each other.

Four modes with different priorities

Planet Zoo offers several ways to play, and choosing the right mode matters because they do not provide the same management experience.

  • Career Mode provides structured scenarios and guided objectives that introduce construction, animal care, staff management, and financial decisions.
  • Sandbox Mode removes most economic pressure and is the best choice for unrestricted building, experimentation, and large creative projects.
  • Challenge Mode delivers an offline management experience with budgets, research, animal adoption, and progression without the online Franchise marketplace.
  • Franchise Mode connects a series of zoos through shared progression, community trading, and an online animal market.

Franchise Mode is not conventional co-op. It is a single-player management mode with online community features, where players can buy and sell animals and share creations. The zoo itself is not operated simultaneously by multiple players.

Staff, guests, research, and zoo economics

A successful zoo depends on more than attractive enclosures. You hire keepers, mechanics, educators, security staff, vendors, caretakers, and veterinarians, then assign them to work areas and facilities. Staff rooms, paths, power, water, habitat access, and workload all influence how efficiently the zoo operates.

Guests bring another layer of planning. Their experience depends on visibility, education, cleanliness, food, drink, facilities, scenery, ticket value, and the general flow of the park. Research unlocks better equipment, educational options, building pieces, and animal-care improvements, while finances determine how quickly a new zoo can expand.

The economic systems are approachable at a basic level but can become highly detailed when you optimize staff zones, donation points, shops, transport routes, guest movement, and habitat placement. Players who dislike menus and operational problem-solving may find the management layer demanding, even when the creative tools are the main attraction.

Content model and PC ecosystem

Planet Zoo is a paid base game with optional paid add-ons. The current PC catalog includes the Deluxe Upgrade Pack and a broad lineup of animal and themed packs, including Arctic, South America, Australia, Aquatic, Southeast Asia, Africa, North America, Europe, Wetlands, Conservation, Twilight, Grasslands, Tropical, Arid, Oceania, Eurasia, Barnyard, Zookeepers, Americas, and Asia content. The Ultimate Edition bundle combines the base game with the Deluxe content and the main pack collection.

The base game remains playable without purchasing every add-on. DLC expands the animal roster, scenery themes, building options, and selected career content, so the value of individual packs depends on the species and architectural style you want to use.

On PC, Planet Zoo requires Steam and uses Steam Workshop for community blueprints, habitats, scenery, and complete zoo creations. Steam Cloud support is available, and the storefront lists Denuvo Anti-tamper as third-party DRM. Offline play is supported after the initial setup, but Franchise Mode is unavailable without its online services.

The PC version is primarily designed around keyboard and mouse control for detailed placement and management. The storefront does not present the game as having full controller support. It supports interface, subtitles, and varying levels of audio localization across 18 listed languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese-Brazil, Simplified Chinese, Italian, Russian, Polish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Czech, Traditional Chinese, and Latin American Spanish.

Who should play Planet Zoo?

Planet Zoo is a strong fit for players who enjoy creative building, realistic animal care, long-form management, and gradual zoo improvement. It rewards patience because the most satisfying projects often involve designing efficient infrastructure first and decorating the park afterward.

It is less suitable for players seeking a fast campaign, traditional competitive multiplayer, or a lightweight casual tycoon. The interface contains many overlapping systems, and the most ambitious habitats require precision, planning, and repeated adjustments.

Planet Zoo FAQ

Is Planet Zoo still the current name on PC?

Yes. The current PC storefront continues to list the game as Planet Zoo. There is no verified rebrand that replaces the original name.

Is Planet Zoo multiplayer or co-op?

No. Planet Zoo is fundamentally a single-player game. Franchise Mode adds online animal trading and community connectivity, but it does not provide shared co-op zoo management or split-screen play.

Can Planet Zoo be played offline?

Yes, after the initial Steam setup. Sandbox, Career, and Challenge play can be used offline, while Franchise Mode requires its online marketplace and connected features.

What is the best mode for creative building?

Sandbox Mode is the most direct choice because it removes the financial pressure that limits early construction. Challenge Mode is better if you want budgets, research, adoption, and offline progression alongside the building tools.

Does Planet Zoo support mods?

The officially supported PC customization ecosystem is Steam Workshop, where players share blueprints, scenery, habitats, and complete zoo designs. The storefront does not present a built-in official mod browser beyond Workshop sharing.

How many DLC packs are available?

The current PC catalog lists the base game, the Deluxe Upgrade Pack, and 20 animal or themed packs, with the Ultimate Edition bundle containing 22 items in total. Each add-on expands the available species, scenery, building pieces, or related content rather than replacing the base game.
