Quake III: Arena is the third full-fledged installment of the popular FPS shooter series, which revolutionized and changed the face of the genre forever. Developers from id Software studio decided to depart from the previous gameplay formula and focus entirely on multiplayer mode. The game was released in 1999 on personal computers (Windows, Linux and Macintosh), and a year later it was also converted for the SEGA Dreamcast console.

Due to the specifics of the production, the story of Quake III: Arena was only delicately outlined. In the game, we play as the greatest warriors of all time, who, to the delight of the Vadrigar race, compete with each other in specially designed arenas.

In terms of mechanics, the gameplay in Quake III: Arena does not differ significantly from what was offered in the multiplayer mode in previous installments of the series. The game is played at a much faster pace than in Quake II, although not as fast as in the first game. Players have an arsenal of nine well-balanced weapons at their disposal: Gauntlet, Machinegun, Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, Rocket Launcher, Lightning Gun, Railgun, Plasma Gun and a powerful BFG 10K, reminiscent of a similar model from the Doom series. Weapons appear at regular intervals at specific points on the map, and each works best in different gameplay conditions. In the event of death, the player loses the weapons they currently have and is reborn with two random guns of relatively low firepower.

Of course, the game does not lack power-ups typical for the series, which restore a certain amount of health or armor, increase movement speed or weapon strength for a certain period of time, as well as provide invisibility, the ability to teleport or fly, and even temporary immortality. One of the main innovations is the ability to earn various medals during combat, awarded for impressive actions, such as crossing the map on one life or a certain number of hits or frags in a row.

Unlike the previous installments in the series, Quake III: Arena focuses primarily on multiplayer gameplay. Among the available game modes are: Free for All (FFA) - which is a classic deathmatch where each player fights for their own account, Team Deathmatch (TDM) - a team-based variant of FFA, Tournament - a two-player duel, and Capture the Flag - where the goal of two teams is to take over enemy flags while defending their own. Depending on the mode, up to 16 players can play simultaneously.

In Quake III: Arena we also find a single-player option, which is a series of battles with bots controlled by artificial intelligence. The game is divided into seven stages of increasing difficulty, and access to the next stages is gained after completing all maps on a given level. The whole game is complemented by skirmish mode, in which we can freely modify the parameters of the game.

As in the case of the earlier works of id Software studio, the graphic design of Quake III: Arena stands at a very high level (as for the end of the 90s), although the next generation of the original id Tech 3 engine does not bring as many changes as in the first two parts of the series. The map design, typical of the series, remained unchanged, combining elements of Gothic and modern technology. In comparison to the predecessors, however, the whole is characterized by a considerable minimalism and much more vivid colors.

Quake III's unquestionable asset is its traditionally open architecture, which allows players to create their own modifications. Also noteworthy is the excellent audio setting, with a voiceover commenting on the events in the arenas and a truly energetic soundtrack, which this time features songs by Sonic Mayhem and Frontline Assembly.
