Game Description

Encased: A Sci-Fi Post-Apocalyptic RPG is a PC isometric CRPG from Dark Crystal Games and Prime Matter. Current Steam and GOG listings still use this full title; there is no verified rebrand, renamed edition, or free-to-play transition replacing it. The game combines turn-based tactical combat, open-world exploration, faction politics, crafting, survival pressures, and skill-based dialogue beneath the mysterious Dome.

Its alternate-1970s setting gives the post-apocalyptic formula a different identity. Instead of another conventional nuclear wasteland, Encased places the player inside an enormous artifact built by an unknown civilization, where radiation, anomalies, hostile creatures, competing organizations, and the unstable Maelstrom shape everyday survival.

How Encased Plays

Encased uses an isometric camera for exploration and tactical encounters. You create a custom protagonist, select attributes and abilities, choose one of five CRONUS Corporation divisions known as Wings, then travel into the Dome on a one-way expedition. That background choice is not just cosmetic: it influences available dialogue, character identity, and some of the options open to your build.

The central loop moves between investigation, conversation, scavenging, travel, combat, and character development. You search facilities and wasteland locations for artifacts, equipment, crafting materials, and clues, while deciding whether a problem is best solved through violence, stealth, technical expertise, persuasion, bribery, or another specialized skill.

Combat is turn-based and uses action points for movement, attacks, abilities, items, and other battlefield decisions. Encounters can include your protagonist, companions, enemies, and potential allies. Positioning, weapon choice, target selection, ammunition, status effects, and the timing of support abilities all matter more than simply stacking damage.

Players can build toward melee combat, firearms, sniping, stealth, psionics, diplomacy, hacking, mechanics, thievery, driving, or hybrid roles. The game also supports approaches that reduce or avoid combat, although some situations still reward careful preparation and a well-developed combat plan.

The Dome, Maelstrom, and Faction Politics

The Dome is more than a backdrop. It is an enclosed research zone filled with abandoned technology, dangerous anomalies, mutated wildlife, lost expeditions, and settlements formed after the Incident. The setting gradually shifts from a corporate expedition story into a struggle over who controls the future of the people trapped inside.

A major narrative force is the Maelstrom, an unstable artificial intelligence awakened beneath the Dome. Its presence connects the game's science-fiction mystery with the social collapse around it. The result is a world where technological discoveries, faction agendas, and personal decisions are closely connected.

Reputation is one of the most important long-term systems. Your behavior can improve or damage relationships with factions and individuals, affecting access to conversations, rewards, quests, and possible solutions. Crime also has consequences: theft, violence, and other offenses can leave traces that alter how characters respond to you.

That reactivity creates a genuine choices-matter structure, but it is not a simple morality meter. A practical decision may help one group while making another hostile, and attempts to remain neutral can become difficult when the factions want incompatible outcomes. The campaign supports multiple endings rather than a single fixed resolution.

Character Builds and Practical Systems

Character creation is designed around broad role-playing freedom rather than a single intended hero. You can create a persuasive negotiator, a stealth specialist, a technical scavenger, a heavy melee fighter, a sniper, a psionic user, or a less conventional low-intelligence character. Skills influence both combat performance and the ways you interact with the world.

Outside combat, skill checks frequently determine what you can discover, repair, unlock, steal, understand, or negotiate. Hacking and mechanics open technical routes, while criminal and influence-oriented abilities can change how encounters unfold. This makes non-combat progression a practical alternative to treating every locked door or hostile group as a fight.

Equipment management is equally central. Encased includes weapon upgrades, crafting, armor repair, ammunition concerns, cooking, and the construction of specialized gear such as the Servoshell robotic armor. Driving also becomes part of the exploration system, allowing you to use vehicles for faster travel and access to additional encounters.

Companions expand the party's tactical and conversational options, but Encased remains a single-player experience. There is no verified co-op campaign, online multiplayer mode, or split-screen feature in the current PC storefront information.

Content Model and Editions

The current PC product is a paid single-player base game. Steam lists three small add-ons: the Portrait Pack, Run and Gun Kit, and Soundtrack. These are not presented as a large expansion program or seasonal content model.

The add-ons are closely associated with the game's crowdfunding and supporter rewards. The Portrait Pack expands character-creation presentation, the Run and Gun Kit provides additional themed content, and the Soundtrack is an audio extra rather than a new campaign or region. Players buying the base game should not expect a separate story expansion to be required for the main experience.

Steam also sells a Supporter Pack bundle containing Encased and the listed extras. The practical storefront distinction is therefore between the standard base product and an optional bundle, not between multiple renamed editions. GOG lists the same game under the full official title and provides a DRM-free version.

PC Features and Accessibility

Encased supports keyboard and mouse controls as well as gamepad play. Gamepad support was added through a post-launch update, alongside interface adjustments intended to make the game more usable on a television or handheld display. The update also introduced font-size controls and a high-contrast option.

The PC ecosystem differs slightly by storefront. Steam provides its usual achievements, trading cards, cloud saves, family sharing, and Steam overlay features. GOG states that its version is DRM-free, does not require an online connection to play, and can be installed without GOG Galaxy. No multiplayer service or anti-cheat system is identified because the game is built as a solo RPG.

Current storefront language information lists English and Russian full audio, with interface and subtitle support for English, Russian, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. This makes the game more accessible to players who want localized text while keeping the original voice options limited to its documented supported languages.

Who Should Play Encased?

Encased is a strong fit for players who prefer old-school CRPG systems, faction consequences, skill checks, dialogue-heavy quests, and exploratory science fiction over fast action. It is especially suitable for anyone who enjoys building a character around a specific social or technical identity and then testing that build against a reactive wasteland.

Players looking for a tightly paced cinematic RPG, real-time combat, online co-op, or a heavily polished modern interface may find the experience less appealing. Its strengths are breadth, systems, and setting, while its slower rhythm asks you to read conversations, inspect equipment, manage resources, and accept that some choices permanently close other possibilities.

For a closely related post-apocalyptic CRPG with isometric exploration, turn-based battles, and skill-driven decisions, classic wasteland RPG survival in ATOM RPG Trudograd is a natural comparison. Players seeking the older lineage that helped define this design tradition can also examine the choice-heavy isometric post-apocalyptic RPG structure of Fallout 2.
