Game Description

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin on PC is a third-person, turn-based JRPG and creature-collector set in Capcom's Monster Hunter universe. The current Steam storefront continues to use the same title, with no separate PC rebrand replacing Wings of Ruin. You play as a Rider who hatches, raises, and customizes Monsties before taking them into tactical battles, story quests, exploration zones, and optional multiplayer activities.

A Turn-Based Monster Hunter Built Around Matchups

Wings of Ruin replaces the main series' real-time weapon combat with a structured command system. Each turn, you choose attacks, skills, items, equipment changes, or a different Monstie while reading enemy behavior and selecting the right response.

The central battle rule is the three-way relationship between Power, Speed, and Technical attacks. Winning a head-to-head clash deals extra damage and helps build the Kinship Gauge, while choosing the wrong attack type can leave your Rider or Monstie exposed.

Combat is more involved than simply selecting the strongest creature. You can switch Monsties during battle, change weapons once per turn, target monster parts, use status effects, and coordinate attacks with a Battle Buddy. A correctly timed Double Attack fills the Kinship Gauge quickly and creates a reliable path toward stronger abilities.

When the gauge is ready, you can ride your active Monstie and trigger its unique Kinship Skill. These attacks reflect the Monstie's identity and elemental affiliation, making the bond between Rider and creature part of the combat system rather than a cosmetic relationship.

Eggs, Monsties, and the Rite of Channeling

Exploration feeds directly into team building. Monster dens contain eggs with different appearances and genetic possibilities, and returning to town lets you hatch new Monsties, inspect their traits, and decide which creatures deserve a place in your party.

The most important customization system is the Rite of Channeling. It allows you to transfer genes from one Monstie to another, but the source Monstie is consumed in the process. This creates a meaningful tradeoff between collecting duplicates and sacrificing them to produce a stronger specialist.

Genes can grant active attacks, passive bonuses, elemental effects, and improved combat roles. Their arrangement also contributes to Bingo Bonuses, so an effective Monstie build is shaped by both individual gene strength and the pattern formed across its gene slots.

That system gives the post-story loop more depth than simple leveling. You can breed toward a particular element, attack type, status effect, or skill combination, then test the result against tougher targets and multiplayer challenges.

Outside combat, different Monsties provide Riding Actions that affect exploration. Depending on the creature, you may be able to climb, swim, jump, fly, break obstacles, or locate useful objects, so party composition also influences how efficiently you move through the world.

Story Campaign and Optional Activities

The campaign follows a new Rider drawn into a mystery involving disappearing Rathalos and a powerful egg connected to the game's central legend. The narrative is more accessible and character-driven than the mainline hunting games, making Wings of Ruin a reasonable entry point for players who know little about Monster Hunter.

Progress is divided between story quests, village services, exploration, monster encounters, and Subquests. Optional objectives can ask you to gather materials, defeat specific monsters, break parts, or deliver items, with rewards that support equipment crafting and Monstie development.

Crafting remains recognizably Monster Hunter in structure. Materials collected from monsters and the environment are used at the Smithy to create weapons and armor, while equipment skills add another layer to Rider customization.

After the main adventure opens up, repeatable challenges become more important. Rare dens, stronger monsters, gene optimization, Trial Quests, and multiplayer expeditions give completion-focused players reasons to keep improving their roster rather than stopping when the story ends.

What the PC Edition Includes

The base PC game is a paid single-player RPG with optional online features. Steam also lists a free trial version, letting prospective players sample the opening portion before committing to the full game.

The storefront currently offers a standard edition, a Deluxe Edition that adds the Deluxe Kit, and collection bundles pairing Wings of Ruin with the original Monster Hunter Stories. The core adventure is not presented as a free-to-play game.

Additional paid content is primarily cosmetic. The catalog includes layered armor, hairstyles, Rider and Navirou outfits, Ena costumes, character edit tickets, and other appearance-focused extras. The Deluxe Kit is separate from the standard game and should not be confused with a story expansion.

For players comparing editions, the important distinction is simple: the standard purchase provides the full campaign and gameplay systems, while the Deluxe Kit and extra-content packs concentrate on customization rather than a separate campaign chapter.

PC Controls, Languages, and Online Features

The Steam version supports full controller support alongside keyboard and mouse input. A controller is a natural fit for exploration and menu-driven battles, while mouse and keyboard remain practical for players who prefer direct PC input.

Steam lists English and Japanese full audio, with interface and subtitle support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Latin American Spanish.

The PC listing identifies Enigma Protector as third-party DRM. Steam features include achievements, trading cards, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, online co-op, and online PvP. No separate anti-cheat feature is listed as a core storefront feature.

Multiplayer is focused rather than persistent. You can team up with another player for Co-Op Quests, including slaying, trial, and expedition objectives, or challenge other Riders in Versus Battles.

Versus play supports both Single Battles and Pair Battles, with rules such as Balanced, No Limit, Quick, and Duo-Balance. This is competitive turn-based team building, not a shared open-world campaign or split-screen adventure.

Who Should Play Wings of Ruin?

Wings of Ruin is a strong match for PC players who enjoy creature collecting, party optimization, JRPG progression, and colorful exploration. It is especially appealing if you want a monster-taming game where combat depends on prediction, team roles, equipment, and build decisions rather than reflexes.

Players coming from Pokémon-style creature collecting will recognize the appeal of hatching and raising a roster, but the battle system is more explicitly tied to attack types, weapon categories, part breaking, and Monster Hunter materials.

It is less suitable for anyone expecting the real-time hunts, large weapon movesets, or demanding action combat of Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise. The pace is deliberate, and repeated battles can feel methodical if you prefer constant movement and immediate execution.

It also asks for patience from players who want to optimize genes. The Rite of Channeling can be ignored during much of the story, but deeper post-game builds require experimentation, duplicate Monsties, and careful planning.

Similar PC Experiences

The closest comparison depends on which part of Wings of Ruin matters most to you. For tactical creature collecting, its strongest identity comes from combining a monster roster with turn-based matchups and deep build customization.

Players who prefer creature companions, exploration, and cooperative progression may also consider creature-collecting survival adventures like Palworld, although Palworld is built around crafting, base construction, survival systems, and real-time action rather than a story-led turn-based JRPG.

Within the Monster Hunter franchise, the mainline games are useful contrasts rather than direct substitutes. They offer real-time hunting, weapon mastery, and equipment crafting, while Wings of Ruin focuses on turn order, Monstie genetics, and a more traditional party-based RPG structure.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin FAQ

Is Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin still the current PC name?

Yes. The current Steam listing continues to use Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. The game is also sold through Monster Hunter Stories collection bundles, but those bundles do not replace the standalone title's name.

Is the PC version single-player or multiplayer?

It includes a complete single-player campaign, plus online Co-Op Quests and Versus Battles. Co-op supports shared quest activities, while Versus Battles let Riders compete in single or pair formats.

Can you play the whole story cooperatively?

No. The main narrative is designed as a single-player campaign. Multiplayer becomes available through dedicated co-op and competitive modes rather than a fully cooperative version of the story.

What makes the combat different from standard monster-collecting RPGs?

The battle system is built around Power, Speed, and Technical attack types, head-to-head predictions, weapon switching, monster-part targeting, Kinship Skills, and Battle Buddy coordination. The Rite of Channeling adds a separate layer of gene-based build crafting.

Does the PC version support controllers?

Yes. Steam lists full controller support, and the game also supports keyboard and mouse input. Controller play works well with the game's third-person exploration and menu-based combat structure.

What is included in the Deluxe Edition?

The Deluxe Edition includes the base game and the Deluxe Kit. The additional catalog mainly contains cosmetic customization such as outfits, layered armor, hairstyles, and character appearance options rather than a separate story expansion.
