Game Description
Hard West 2 is a PC turn-based tactical RPG set in a supernatural Wild West, where con man Gin Carter leads a posse of outlaws after a raid on the mysterious Ghost Train brings him into conflict with the Devil. The current PC storefront still uses the name Hard West 2, with no verified rebrand or replacement edition.
Developed by Ice Code Games and published by Good Shepherd Entertainment, it combines an isometric battlefield view, character-driven abilities, environmental trick shots, poker-inspired progression, and a campaign built around difficult tactical encounters rather than online competition.
Combat Built Around Momentum
Hard West 2 uses turn-based squad combat, but it strongly favors aggressive planning over passive cover waiting. Each posse member has a limited pool of Action Points for movement, attacks, skills, and items, so every turn becomes a puzzle about reaching the next useful position and creating a safe kill sequence.
The defining system is Bravado. Killing an enemy activates a Bravado State and restores the acting character’s Action Points, allowing a successful attack to become the start of a longer chain. The strongest turns often involve weakening several enemies first, then moving between posse members to finish targets and keep the sequence alive.
This creates a different rhythm from conventional XCOM-style tactics. A character may cross open ground, eliminate one opponent, reposition, and continue attacking if the player has prepared the battlefield correctly. A failed calculation can leave that same character exposed, so Bravado rewards deliberate aggression rather than reckless rushing.
Trick Shots, Luck, and Posse Synergy
Positioning is not limited to ordinary lines of fire. Trick shots let characters bounce bullets from suitable environmental objects, opening firing angles against enemies who would otherwise be protected by cover. Ricochets are especially important when a direct route would cost too many Action Points or expose another posse member.
The game also uses a Luck system that changes how accuracy and survivability are managed. Luck is part of the tactical economy, so players must consider not only whether an attack can connect, but also how a character’s remaining protection and ability resources affect the next exchange.
Every member of the supernatural posse contributes a different tactical tool. Gin Carter provides the central leadership role, Flynn can use Shadow Swap to manipulate positions, Laughing Deer specializes in forceful close-range attacks, Old Man Bill brings unusual ranged options, and Lazarus can use transfusion-based abilities to alter the health balance between allies and enemies.
These skills become more valuable when combined. One character can soften a target, another can change the battlefield geometry, and a third can claim the finishing blow needed to trigger Bravado. The game is at its best when the posse behaves like a coordinated machine rather than four independent shooters.
A Card-Driven Outlaw Campaign
Character development is tied to the Deck of Haunts. Cards can grant skills or enhance existing powers, letting players shape the role of each outlaw without relying on a conventional, broad skill-tree structure.
Equipment also matters. Guns, explosives, trinkets, consumables, and healing items all influence how a mission should be approached. Whiskey and other supplies can support a risky offensive plan, while weapon abilities may determine whether a character is better suited to close combat, precision fire, crowd control, or setup work.
Outside battles, the party travels across a frontier map covering frozen wilderness, lawless towns, and locations touched by the occult. The campaign uses story events, sub-quests, loyalty decisions, and exploration to give the posse’s relationships more weight than a simple sequence of disconnected missions.
Modes, Difficulty, and Free Content
The main experience is a single-player story campaign with multiple difficulty choices. Easy is aimed at players who want a more forgiving story-focused run, while Hard provides the intended tactical challenge and Nightmare is designed for players who want to optimize every action.
The free After Dark update adds a new chapter-level scenario, a special Hellfire Rifle reward, and additional difficulty options including Normal and Nightmare+. Nightmare+ adds turn-limit pressure beyond the standard Nightmare challenge, making it a distinct test of efficient movement and kill sequencing.
The commercial model is straightforward: the PC version is a paid single-player game rather than a free-to-play title. The current Steam presentation does not list a separate paid story expansion for Hard West 2, while the After Dark material is identified as free additional content.
Who Hard West 2 Fits Best
Hard West 2 is a strong match for players who want turn-based tactics with an aggressive combat loop. It suits people who enjoy building kill chains, exploiting unusual firing angles, switching between character abilities, and replaying difficult encounters until the tactical sequence becomes clear.
The supernatural western setting is equally important. Demons, undead enemies, witchcraft, outlaw folklore, the Ghost Train, and the Devil give the campaign a darker identity than a historically grounded western. The tone is closer to occult frontier fiction than to a conventional military strategy game.
Players seeking online multiplayer, cooperative missions, competitive modes, or a large open-world sandbox should look elsewhere. Hard West 2 is built around a focused solo campaign, compact tactical maps, and mastery of its combat systems.
PC Features and Input Reality
The PC storefront lists single-player functionality, Steam Achievements, Steam Trading Cards, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. It does not present multiplayer, co-op, split-screen, dedicated servers, or an online competitive ecosystem as part of the game’s feature set.
The current Steam listing does not advertise full native controller support. For PC players, mouse and keyboard should be treated as the primary input method, particularly because targeting, elevation changes, character switching, and ability selection require precise cursor control.
English is listed for full audio. Interface and subtitle support also covers French, Italian, German, Spanish from Spain, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Simplified Chinese. This makes the game accessible to a broad group of PC players, although English remains the only listed voiced language.
Comparable Tactical Games on PC
Players who enjoy moving through hostile areas before carefully initiating battles may also appreciate stealth-focused tactical adventures like Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. The comparison is structural rather than thematic: Mutant Year Zero emphasizes scouting and stealth ambushes, while Hard West 2 emphasizes Bravado chains and supernatural gunplay.
For a broader mercenary-management alternative, squad tactics with RPG-style mercenaries in Jagged Alliance 3 offer a more expansive strategic layer and cooperative support. Hard West 2 is narrower and more character-driven, with its strongest decisions concentrated inside individual firefights.
Hard West 2 remains the more distinctive choice when the appeal is a gothic western atmosphere, ricochet attacks, a Luck-based combat economy, card-shaped character builds, and a posse whose abilities are designed to chain together during a single turn.
