Game Description
Evil West on PC is a third-person action game that turns the American frontier into a vampire-hunting battleground. Developed by Flying Wild Hog and published by Focus Entertainment, it combines close-range brawling, firearms, supernatural tools, and a linear narrative campaign. The current Steam and GOG listings still use the name Evil West, with no verified rebrand or replacement edition.
Lightning-Fueled Combat In The Weird West
Evil West is built around aggressive, arena-based encounters rather than stealth, open-world wandering, or loot-driven character building. Jesse Rentier fights vampires and other supernatural enemies from a close third-person perspective, switching between punches, firearms, gadgets, and electrically charged abilities as enemy groups close in.
The combat works best when you keep moving. Jesse can strike nearby targets with the Rentier Institute gauntlet, pull enemies into range, interrupt attacks, expose weak points, and finish weakened opponents with violent executions. Firearms provide a useful change of rhythm, but the game constantly pushes you back toward melee range and ability-driven crowd control.
Enemy encounters are designed around priority management. Some targets pressure Jesse from a distance, others rush the player with armor or heavy attacks, and larger monsters demand careful use of dodges, stuns, and finishers. The result is a melee-shooter hybrid where positioning and timing matter more than simply holding down the trigger.
Weapons, Perks, And Combat Progression
Jesse's arsenal expands throughout the campaign. The gauntlet remains the central weapon, while guns and hunting tools add ranged damage, crowd control, and ways to manipulate enemies during larger battles. Each tool has a specific role, so effective play comes from combining them rather than treating every encounter as a basic shooting gallery.
Progression uses a combination of experience-based upgrades and money found during missions. Jesse can unlock skill-tree abilities, improve weapons, and purchase perks that change how particular attacks perform. Upgrades can reward interrupting enemies, exploiting weak spots, extending combos, or using a particular weapon at the right moment.
This is not a traditional role-playing game with randomized equipment, character classes, or endless rarity tiers. The progression is more controlled. You build a stronger version of Jesse by investing in defined abilities, discovering hidden upgrade resources, and learning which tools complement your preferred combat style.
Players who enjoy third-person action games with direct weapon feedback may also appreciate the focused hack-and-slash structure of third-person demon-slaying adventures such as Darksiders Warmastered Edition, although Evil West places much more emphasis on firearms and online cooperation.
A Linear Campaign With Optional Exploration
The story follows Jesse Rentier, an agent of a secretive vampire-hunting organization tasked with stopping a supernatural threat spreading across the frontier. Its setting mixes recognizable Western imagery with monsters, occult technology, and exaggerated comic-book violence. The tone is direct and pulpy rather than realistic or historically grounded.
Missions generally move through a sequence of combat spaces, traversal sections, story scenes, and boss encounters. Between fights, Jesse can search side paths for chests, cash, documents, and other collectibles. These detours are worthwhile for players who want more upgrades, but the game remains primarily a focused campaign instead of an exploration-heavy sandbox.
The structure also makes the game easy to approach in short sessions. You are usually moving toward a clear objective, with optional discoveries placed along the route rather than scattered across a huge map. Players looking for a tightly directed action game will find more here than players expecting a large open-world Western.
Co-Op, Difficulty, And Replay Value
Evil West supports two-player online co-op across its campaign. One player hosts while the other joins the hunt, allowing friends to fight through missions together and combine Jesse's weapons and abilities during encounters.
The PC storefront listings identify online co-op and single-player as separate features. There is no listed split-screen or local co-op mode, so couch multiplayer should not be treated as part of the standard PC feature set. The campaign is still fully playable alone, and its combat encounters are designed to function as a solo action experience first.
Adjustable difficulty gives the combat loop additional range. Lower settings make the campaign more accessible, while higher settings place greater demands on dodging, interruption timing, enemy prioritization, and efficient use of the upgrade system. Replay value comes mainly from difficulty challenges, collectibles, mastery of combat systems, and playing the campaign cooperatively rather than from a live-service endgame.
For another Flying Wild Hog action game built around fast weapon switching, brutal close-range attacks, and highly directed levels, high-speed supernatural combat in Shadow Warrior 3 is a natural comparison. Its first-person perspective and mobility tools create a different feel, but both games favor immediate action over slow-burn progression systems.
PC Features, Controls, And Storefront Options
The Steam version lists full controller support, Steam Cloud, achievements, trading cards, and online co-op. It also includes adjustable difficulty, text-size options, color alternatives, camera-comfort settings, custom volume controls, stereo sound, and surround-sound support.
The game is also available on GOG for Windows. The GOG edition is listed as DRM-free and can be installed through an offline installer without requiring GOG Galaxy. Galaxy remains optional for features such as cloud synchronization and achievement support. The exact launcher and account requirements therefore depend on which PC storefront version you choose.
English is the full-audio language. The storefront data also lists interface and subtitle support for Polish, French, Italian, German, Spanish from Spain, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Czech. Japanese achievements are listed, but Japanese interface, audio, and subtitle support are not shown in the current language table.
Steam also marks the game as playable on Steam Deck and identifies controller-oriented input support. There is no verified official support for mods, dedicated servers, cabinet displays, or competitive multiplayer, so those should not be treated as core PC features.
Content Model And Available Editions
Evil West is sold as a conventional premium action game rather than a free-to-play service. The main purchase provides the complete story campaign, Jesse's combat progression, solo play, and online co-op access for two players.
The current storefront data lists the Wild Wild East Skin Pack as additional content. This is cosmetic content rather than a separate story expansion, new playable character, or large gameplay campaign. No season-pass structure or broad collection of paid gameplay expansions is listed alongside the base game.
That content model is important for expectations. Evil West does not revolve around battle passes, randomized loot, recurring events, or an MMO-style gear chase. Its value is concentrated in the campaign combat, upgrade choices, optional exploration, boss fights, and repeat playthroughs on higher difficulty or with a co-op partner.
Who Should Play Evil West?
Evil West suits PC players who want a compact, combat-heavy action adventure with a strong supernatural hook. It is a good fit for players who enjoy linear level design, responsive melee combat, firearms with distinct tactical roles, upgrade trees, and loud genre storytelling.
It is less suitable for players searching for an open-world Western, deep role-playing choices, stealth-focused missions, competitive multiplayer, or a large post-campaign ecosystem. The game also expects you to engage with its combat systems directly; simply relying on one weapon or repeating one attack pattern becomes less effective as enemy encounters grow more demanding.
Fans of over-the-shoulder action games can also compare it with cinematic third-person combat adventures like God of War. Evil West is smaller in scope and more arcade-like, but both games emphasize close camera framing, upgrade-driven abilities, heavy attacks, and carefully staged enemy arenas.
