Game Description
God of War on PC is a third-person action-adventure game with RPG progression, close-range combat, environmental puzzles, and a single-player story set in a Norse mythological world. Steam and Epic Games Store currently list it simply as God of War, with no verified rebrand replacing the PC edition. Kratos travels with Atreus, combining brutal melee combat with exploration, character upgrades, and a carefully paced father-and-son narrative.
A closer, heavier combat system
The game uses an over-the-shoulder camera that keeps Kratos close to the action. Fights are built around deliberate positioning, enemy reactions, shield timing, dodges, parries, and choosing the right attack for the situation rather than relying only on wide crowd-clearing combos.
Kratos begins with the Leviathan Axe, a frost-infused weapon that works in melee and at range. Throwing it at enemies, targets, and environmental mechanisms is central to both combat and exploration, while recalling it gives the weapon a distinctive rhythm. Later, the Blades of Chaos add fire-based attacks, longer reach, and a different approach to managing groups of enemies.
The Guardian Shield is more than a defensive tool. It supports blocks, parries, shield strikes, and counterattacks, allowing skilled players to interrupt enemy pressure and create openings. Kratos can also use bare-handed attacks, Spartan Rage, Runic attacks, and weapon-specific skills to build a flexible combat style.
Atreus, abilities, and progression
Atreus is an active combat companion rather than a passive story character. His bow provides ranged support, interrupts enemies, and complements Kratos's close-range pressure. His arrows also interact with puzzles and certain combat situations, making him part of the game's mechanical design as well as its narrative.
Progression combines skill trees, equipment upgrades, enchantments, XP, and hacksilver. Kratos and Atreus can improve their weapons, armor, abilities, and special attacks, while gear choices affect statistics such as strength, defense, vitality, runic power, and cooldowns. The system is approachable at first but gives completion-focused players meaningful room to optimize.
Exploration rewards attention. Chests, ravens, lore markers, hidden chambers, favors, and optional combat encounters are distributed throughout the realms. Some paths remain inaccessible until new tools or abilities are obtained, creating a light ability-gated exploration loop without turning the game into a traditional open-world sandbox.
A structured journey through the Norse realms
The main story follows Kratos and Atreus as they travel through Midgard and other Norse realms. The adventure is strongly directed, but hub areas provide optional paths, side objectives, environmental secrets, and revisitable locations that expand the setting beyond the critical path.
Story progression, combat encounters, puzzle rooms, traversal sequences, and character conversations are blended into a largely continuous presentation. The design favors momentum and cinematic staging, yet it regularly pauses for exploration, lore, equipment management, or a demanding optional fight.
Players seeking additional challenges can pursue Valkyrie encounters, realm-specific activities, hidden bosses, collectibles, and favors. These activities are not required to finish the main narrative, but they test the combat system more severely and give upgraded builds a clear purpose.
What the PC edition includes
The PC release is a paid single-player base game rather than a live-service product. There is no multiplayer campaign, co-op mode, seasonal progression, or competitive combat component. Storefront listings do not present a separate paid expansion structure for this edition.
Purchasing the PC version includes bonus cosmetic items: the Death's Vow armor sets for Kratos and Atreus, plus the Exile's Guardian, Buckler of the Forge, Shining Elven Soul, and Dokkenshieldr shield skins. These additions change appearance rather than creating a separate gameplay campaign.
The content model suits players who want one complete narrative adventure with optional side content and post-campaign mastery objectives. It is less appropriate for players specifically looking for repeatable seasonal content, online matchmaking, or a deep randomized-loot endgame.
PC controls and display features
God of War supports mouse and keyboard remapping, allowing players to customize bindings for movement, aiming, weapon use, camera control, and combat actions. It also supports DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox wireless controllers, and other compatible gamepads, with controller-specific interface support for the major PlayStation and Xbox options.
The PC edition adds 21:9 ultra-wide support, unlocked frame rates, expanded graphics settings, higher-resolution shadows, improved screen-space reflections, GTAO, and SSDO. NVIDIA users can enable DLSS and Reflex where supported, while the presentation can be adjusted through graphical presets and individual rendering options.
Steam lists Steam Cloud, Steam Achievements, Remote Play on TV, Family Sharing, full controller support, adjustable difficulty, save-anytime functionality, subtitle options, and several accessibility controls. Epic Games Store lists cloud saves and single-player support. No online multiplayer service or anti-cheat system is advertised as part of the game, which matches its offline-focused structure.
Localization is broad. Steam lists interface and subtitle support across 18 languages, while full voice audio is available for a smaller selection that includes English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish variants. Check the storefront package if a specific spoken language is essential.
Who should play God of War on PC?
This is a strong fit for players who want weighty third-person combat, mythological world-building, exploration rewards, optional bosses, and a story that gives equal importance to character development and physical spectacle.
It also works well for newcomers to the franchise. The Norse setting introduces a new chapter for Kratos, while the game gradually explains the relevant history and relationships without requiring extensive knowledge of earlier entries.
Players who prefer fast arcade hack-and-slash combat, fully open-ended worlds, or uninterrupted multiplayer may find the deliberate pacing and linear story structure restrictive. The adventure includes RPG systems, but it remains primarily a focused action-adventure rather than a loot-driven role-playing game.
Comparable action-adventure games on PC
For players who enjoy dark fantasy combat mixed with dungeon exploration and environmental puzzles, third-person action adventures like Darksiders Warmastered Edition offer a related blend of melee fighting, ability-based progression, and mythic world design. Darksiders is more puzzle-heavy and more openly influenced by classic dungeon-crawling structure.
Those more interested in cinematic third-person exploration, character progression, and a large science-fiction setting may prefer open-world action RPGs such as Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Its ranged hunting and machine encounters differ substantially from Kratos's close-quarters combat, but both games connect narrative travel with upgrade systems and optional exploration.
God of War remains more focused than either comparison. Its strongest identity comes from the combination of axe recall combat, companion commands, tightly staged storytelling, and optional challenges that reward mastery of its defensive systems.
God of War FAQ
Is the PC game officially called God of War or God of War 2018?
The current Steam and Epic Games Store listings use the title God of War. Players and media often add a year label to distinguish it from earlier games in the franchise, but there is no verified PC storefront rebrand replacing the official listing name.
Is God of War on PC single-player only?
Yes. The PC edition is a single-player experience with no online co-op, split-screen mode, or competitive multiplayer. Atreus supports Kratos during the campaign, but he is not a second playable player character.
Does the PC version include DLC?
The PC package includes the main game and several cosmetic armor and shield items. Storefront listings do not identify a separate story expansion or season pass for this edition.
Does God of War support keyboard and mouse?
Yes. Players can use keyboard and mouse with customizable bindings. Full controller support is also available for DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox controllers, and compatible third-party gamepads.
What makes the PC version different?
The PC edition adds ultra-wide support, unlocked frame rates, expanded rendering settings, 4K support, NVIDIA DLSS and Reflex support where compatible, and detailed control customization. Steam also adds platform features such as achievements, cloud saves, and Remote Play on TV.
Is God of War an open-world RPG?
It is better described as a third-person action-adventure game with RPG progression and hub-style exploration. The story is structured and directed, while optional realms, favors, collectibles, hidden areas, gear upgrades, and Valkyrie battles provide additional depth beyond the main route.
