Game Description

UBOAT PC is a World War II submarine simulation built around survival, crew management, and open-sea naval strategy. The current storefront name remains UBOAT; it has not been replaced by a remastered or rebranded edition. Developed by Deep Water Studio and published by PlayWay S.A., it combines an operational command layer with a detailed interior view of a German U-boat.

Command The Crew, Not Just The Submarine

UBOAT's central idea is simple: you control the crew in order to control the boat. Orders are carried out by officers and sailors assigned to stations throughout the submarine, so every patrol depends on staffing the right jobs at the right time.

Routine operations include navigation, observation, hydrophone listening, radio work, engine handling, torpedo maintenance, repairs, food preparation, and medical treatment. You can let the crew handle these tasks or take direct control of important stations through the first-person EGO perspective, while the normal interface offers section, orbit, map, and command-focused views.

The human side of the simulation matters as much as the machinery. Sailors can become hungry, tired, stressed, or demoralized, reducing the boat's effectiveness when a patrol becomes dangerous. Rest schedules, morale activities, food supplies, oxygen usage, and officer assignments are practical command decisions rather than decorative statistics.

Patrols, Contacts, And Torpedo Attacks

At sea, UBOAT shifts between long stretches of navigation and sudden tactical problems. You plot courses, manage time compression, monitor fuel and battery charge, and decide when the boat should remain surfaced, dive, conserve power, or approach a target under concealment.

Finding an enemy is only the start of an attack. The hydrophone helps locate contacts, while visual observation, binoculars, the periscope, and the UZO provide additional information. Your officers can calculate firing solutions, but you can also work directly with the submarine's weapons and instruments when a more hands-on approach is appropriate.

Torpedo attacks are shaped by positioning, target movement, detection risk, weapon availability, and the quality of the firing solution. The boat also carries a 88 mm deck gun for suitable surface engagements, although ammunition, enemy response, weather, and the condition of your crew can make a seemingly easy encounter costly.

Damage Control And Survival At Sea

UBOAT treats combat damage as an ongoing emergency rather than a simple health-bar exchange. Flooding, equipment failures, fires, damaged systems, and injuries can force you to redistribute crew members while still trying to navigate or evade pursuing ships.

The submarine's internal layout supports a detailed damage-control system. A damaged compartment can affect the boat's stability and available functions, while crew members may need to repair leaks, restore equipment, close sections, or keep essential stations operating under pressure.

Survival also depends on managing resources. Fuel, battery charge, oxygen, food, torpedoes, and repair capacity all influence how far a patrol can continue. The game allows creative recovery in special situations, including assistance from allies and the collection of useful resources from wreckage or captured ships.

Career Progression And Historical Operations

The campaign is organized around Kriegsmarine assignments rather than a purely linear sequence of scripted missions. Orders can change during a patrol, and unexpected problems may interrupt the original plan, making preparation and flexibility more important than simply following a checklist.

Successful operations provide budget and reputation for your unit. Those rewards can support boat upgrades, new equipment, improved torpedo options, sonar decoys, CO2 absorbers, and other technologies that expand your tactical choices.

Officers can also be assigned to special duties at headquarters to accelerate research. This creates a useful tradeoff between taking experienced personnel on patrol and leaving them behind to support technological development, intelligence, or other long-term career benefits.

Current Content And Paid Add-Ons

UBOAT is a paid single-player game with its main survival sandbox and career structure in the base package. The current Steam catalog lists two paid add-ons, so players should distinguish between the core game and optional cosmetic or expansion content.

Type IX: Distant Coasts adds three playable Type IX variants, including the Type IXA, Type IXC, and Type IXC/40. It also expands the campaign with distant operational areas and missions connected to the Monsun Gruppe, South Atlantic patrols, and Operation Kiebitz.

The Supporter Pack is primarily cosmetic. It adds wooden and metal deck options, shark-themed paint, camouflage patterns, torpedo skins, and additional conning-tower emblems. It does not represent a separate campaign or a new multiplayer mode.

PC Features And Player Fit

The PC version is designed around keyboard-and-mouse command management, multiple camera modes, direct station control, and a dense simulation interface. The storefront lists Steam Workshop, Steam Cloud, achievements, Family Sharing, and single-player support.

UBOAT does not present itself as an online co-op or competitive multiplayer game. It is best understood as a solo command simulation where the challenge comes from coordinating a crew, balancing resources, and responding to escalating failures.

The storefront lists interface and subtitle support in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Turkish, Czech, Portuguese, Japanese, and Ukrainian. Full audio is listed for English and German, which makes the language setup relevant for players who want voiced crew communication.

Who Should Play UBOAT?

UBOAT suits players who want more than a periscope and a torpedo tube. Its strongest audience is anyone interested in crew management, historical naval operations, systems-driven survival, and the tension created by several small problems becoming one large emergency.

It is also a good fit for players who enjoy adjusting the level of direct involvement. You can rely heavily on officers and the interface, or spend more time inside the submarine manually operating stations and inspecting the situation from an officer's viewpoint.

Players seeking fast arcade combat, a story-led campaign with fixed missions, or online submarine co-op should look elsewhere. For a different WWII command perspective, crew-focused naval strategy aboard a damaged aircraft carrier offers a related management challenge, but with a surface fleet rather than a covert U-boat patrol.

Similar Submarine Games On PC

UBOAT's closest comparison is the traditional WWII submarine simulation, but its emphasis on crew welfare and internal management gives it a different rhythm from a pure attack-and-navigation title.

Players who want a more combat-centered submarine experience can compare its stealth, sonar, and weapons logic with Cold War submarine tactics built around sonar contacts and guided weapons. The historical setting and weapons differ, but both games reward patience, positioning, and careful interpretation of contact data.

For a less historical and more exploratory take on submarine control, underwater sandbox adventures with strategic crew management provide a broader science-fiction alternative. UBOAT remains the more focused choice for players specifically interested in German U-boat operations and crew survival during wartime patrols.

UBOAT FAQ

Is UBOAT still called UBOAT on PC?

Yes. The current Steam storefront continues to list the game as UBOAT, with Deep Water Studio as developer and PlayWay S.A. as publisher. No current rebrand or replacement title is presented on the storefront.

Is UBOAT single-player or multiplayer?

UBOAT is a single-player submarine simulation. The store features include Steam Workshop, Steam Cloud, achievements, and Family Sharing, but no online co-op or competitive multiplayer mode is listed.

What does the Type IX: Distant Coasts DLC add?

It adds three Type IX submarine variants, new distant campaigns and missions, South Atlantic operations, the Monsun Gruppe setting, Operation Kiebitz, and several historical scenarios and emblems.

Does the Supporter Pack add new gameplay?

The Supporter Pack is mainly a customization bundle. It includes deck variations, camouflage patterns, torpedo skins, shark artwork, and additional historical-style emblems rather than a new campaign or playable faction.

What is the real gameplay loop in UBOAT?

You prepare the crew and submarine in port, accept or complete operational assignments, navigate patrol areas, detect and attack targets, manage damage and resources, and return to improve the boat and develop new equipment. The long-term loop is patrol preparation, tactical execution, survival, and career progression.
