Game Description

Dustborn on PC is a third-person, story-driven action-adventure about a punk band, a stolen package, and the power of language in an alternate America. The current storefront name remains Dustborn, with no verified rebrand or separate definitive edition. Red Thread Games combines branching dialogue, crew management, rhythm performances, exploration, and comic-book brawling into a deliberately hybrid road-trip game.

A choice-driven road trip across the Divided States

Dustborn follows Pax, an exile and con artist known as an Anomal, as she transports a mysterious package from Pacifica to Nova Scotia. The journey crosses the Justice-controlled American Republic, where authoritarian forces and the fanatical Puritans create pressure at nearly every stop.

The campaign is structured around a sequence of roadside locations rather than a conventional open world. You explore towns, camps, facilities, and other stops from a third-person perspective, investigate local situations, talk with residents, complete assignments, and decide how Pax handles conflict.

The central loop is conversation-led. Dialogue choices shape relationships, alter the mood inside the bus, and influence how individual crew members respond to later events. Dustborn uses visible narrative feedback through Coda Moments, which identify important points where a character's current emotional state or earlier decisions affect the story.

Words are weapons, tools, and social pressure

Pax's Anomal abilities turn language into a practical gameplay system. In conversations, Vox lets her manipulate people and steer tense situations. During combat, spoken attacks called Shouts help disrupt enemies, create openings, and support Pax's physical attacks.

The word system is not simply a collection of dialogue choices. You craft and learn new words, then decide when to use them against hostile characters or inside social encounters. That makes language part of both the narrative and the action layer, even though the game remains primarily focused on its characters and story.

Combat uses a magnetic baseball bat, ranged bat attacks, blocking, chain attacks, and Anomal abilities. The action is closer to a compact arcade brawler than to a character-action game with deep combo trees. Free updates have expanded enemy types, weapons, hit effects, and combat challenges, while also improving the feel of encounters.

Players who prefer narrative games can select Story Mode, which automatically skips combat encounters. Easy and Normal modes also provide a way to skip individual fights, while Hard Mode makes combat more demanding and sends Pax back to a checkpoint after defeat.

Build a crew and live between missions

Pax cannot complete the trip alone. She recruits a band of misfits and outcasts, each with distinct personalities, abilities, and personal story threads. Crew members are not just interchangeable party slots; their reactions and relationships are a major part of the campaign's progression.

Time spent on the tour bus matters. You can speak with companions, give them gifts, follow their personal conversations, and observe how the group's internal dynamics change. The bus gradually becomes a record of the journey through memories, mementos, and collected gifts, giving optional interactions more weight than simple cosmetic downtime.

The band cover also creates a second activity loop. At selected points, you rehearse and perform punk songs through rhythm-based music sequences. These performances provide a change of pace from investigation and conversation, while success can affect the quality of the band's public act and the atmosphere around the crew.

Dustborn's graphic-novel-inspired presentation supports this structure. The world uses colorful 2D illustration influences inside 3D environments, while combat adds comic-style impact words and visual effects. The result is more stylized than realistic, matching the game's alternative-history setting and rebellious road-show identity.

What is included on PC?

The base game is a paid, single-player campaign. The main story, crew interactions, road-trip locations, combat systems, rhythm performances, and branching relationship content are part of the core package rather than a subscription service or free-to-play model.

Steam currently lists two additional pieces of downloadable content alongside the base game: the Original Game Soundtrack and The Vision Tour Bundle. The latter is a cosmetic add-on containing the Sherbet Twirl Hat, EYE C U Jacket, and Psycho Pete Bat. It requires the base game and does not add a separate campaign.

There is no verified alternate campaign edition or storefront rename to distinguish from the standard Dustborn listing. Players comparing store pages should focus on whether they are buying the base game, the cosmetic Vision Tour Bundle, the soundtrack, or a bundle containing those items.

Who is Dustborn for?

Dustborn is best suited to players who want a character-focused narrative adventure with political science-fiction themes, a strong sense of place, and decisions that influence relationships. It is also a good fit for anyone who enjoys road-trip fiction, found-family stories, stylized comic-book worlds, and games that mix several modest systems instead of specializing in one traditional genre.

The game may not suit players searching for deep action combat, a large sandbox, or a purely reactive role-playing system. Its brawling supports the story rather than replacing it, and its branching structure changes conversations, relationships, scenes, and character outcomes within an authored campaign.

Players looking for a different choice-driven road adventure can compare Dustborn with procedural narrative road trips such as Road 96. Road 96 emphasizes replayable journeys and changing encounters, while Dustborn delivers a more directed campaign built around one crew, one package, and one continuous band tour.

PC features, controls, and localization

Dustborn is designed for single-player use. Current storefront feature lists do not advertise online multiplayer, local co-op, split-screen play, competitive modes, dedicated server tools, or a persistent online ecosystem. The experience is built around one player's choices and campaign state.

Steam lists Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, and controller support. Epic Games Store lists controller support and single-player functionality. Keyboard and mouse work naturally for exploration and dialogue selection, while a gamepad is a practical option for driving sequences, brawling, and rhythm performances.

The PC version uses storefront distribution through Steam and Epic Games Store. No separate mandatory launcher, dedicated anti-cheat system, or competitive security layer is advertised for the single-player campaign, although account and platform requirements can vary by storefront.

English is the full-audio language. Storefront listings also provide localized text in languages including French, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Italian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Norwegian, Russian, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. Players should check the specific storefront listing for the exact language combination available in their chosen build.

Fans of Red Thread Games' earlier narrative adventures may also appreciate the studio connection in story-heavy third-person adventures from the creators of Dreamfall Chapters. Dustborn is more action-oriented and more overtly comic-book styled, but both games place substantial weight on dialogue, relationships, and authored worldbuilding.

Dustborn FAQ

Is Dustborn still the current PC name?

Yes. The current Steam and Epic Games Store listings use Dustborn. No verified rebrand, legacy-name replacement, or separate definitive edition has been identified for the PC version.

Is Dustborn single-player or multiplayer?

Dustborn is a single-player game. It does not offer online co-op, split-screen play, competitive multiplayer, or a shared campaign mode.

Can you skip combat in Dustborn?

Yes. Story Mode automatically skips combat encounters, and Easy or Normal difficulty provides an option to skip individual fights. Hard Mode keeps combat active and increases the consequences of failure.

What makes Dustborn different from a standard narrative adventure?

Its identity comes from the combination of weaponized language, third-person exploration, relationship management, band performances, and brawler-style combat. Words function as dialogue tools, social pressure, and combat abilities rather than appearing only as written choices.

Does The Vision Tour Bundle add story content?

No. The Vision Tour Bundle is a cosmetic add-on containing extra clothing and a bat appearance. It requires the base game but does not add a new story campaign or gameplay chapter.

Does Dustborn support controllers on PC?

Yes. Controller support is listed on the Steam and Epic Games Store product pages. The game can also be played with keyboard and mouse, particularly for dialogue selection and general exploration.

How does progression work in Dustborn?

Progression centers on reaching new locations, building relationships, recruiting and understanding crew members, crafting new Vox and Shouts, upgrading Pax's magnetic bat, and seeing how choices alter later scenes. It is not built around traditional character levels, loot tiers, or an open-ended equipment economy.

Totally agree, but I wouldn't exactly call this a game. It's laughable at least, and I can't work out how this junk got released or even made come to that! Wouldn't touch this with a mile long barge pole! D.E.I at it's finest!!!
