Game Description

Age of Mythology: Retold PC is a fantasy real-time strategy game built around mythological factions, resource management, base construction, and god-powered warfare. The current storefront name remains Age of Mythology: Retold; there is no verified replacement title or separate rebrand, although older searches may omit the colon. Developed by World's Edge, Forgotten Empires, Tantalus Media, CaptureAge, and Virtuos Games, it combines a campaign-driven RTS with competitive multiplayer, cooperative play, and replayable mythic challenges.

How the RTS core works

Each match follows the familiar RTS rhythm of gathering resources, establishing a settlement, advancing through technological ages, scouting the map, and building an army. The difference is that every civilization is tied to a pantheon, so economic planning and military composition are shaped by divine choices as much as by ordinary buildings and units.

The PC battlefield uses a top-down 3D perspective suited to managing groups of soldiers, heroes, villagers, and myth units at once. You expand from an initial settlement, secure food, wood, gold, and favor, then decide whether to pressure an opponent early or invest in a stronger economy and later-age units.

Favor is the resource that makes the mythology systems matter. It supports the creation of myth units and access to powerful divine abilities, while heroes provide an important answer to supernatural threats. That creates a clear strategic relationship between human units, heroes, myth units, and god powers rather than treating fantasy elements as simple visual replacements for ordinary troops.

Age advancement is also a major decision point. Choosing a minor god unlocks different technologies, units, and powers, so the same major pantheon can support several distinct approaches. A Greek player might emphasize powerful heroes and siege pressure, while a Norse or Egyptian strategy can develop around different economies, military tools, and divine options.

Pantheons, heroes, and divine abilities

The standard game centers on the Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Atlantean pantheons. Each has its own major gods, minor-god paths, myth units, technologies, and visual identity. The result is more than faction swapping: learning a new civilization means learning a different relationship between economy, favor generation, technology choices, and battlefield timing.

God powers are limited strategic resources rather than ordinary abilities that can be used without consequence. Lightning storms, earthquakes, nourishing rains, protective nature effects, and other powers can change a battle or rescue an economy, but using them at the wrong moment may leave you without a response when the enemy launches its decisive attack.

Myth units give armies specialized tools, from flying creatures and giants to monsters built to punish particular unit types. Heroes are equally important because they are designed to confront mythological enemies. Strong army control therefore depends on reading the opposing composition and keeping the correct counters alive instead of simply producing the most expensive units.

Players who enjoy the civilization-building foundation of historical real-time strategy campaigns such as Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will recognize the resource and expansion loop, but Retold adds a more dramatic layer of faction asymmetry through gods, favor, heroes, and myth units.

Campaigns and repeatable modes

The single-player package is structured around multiple campaigns spanning roughly 50 missions. These scenarios move through mythological settings associated with Troy, Midgard, Egypt, and Atlantis, mixing standard economic openings with defensive missions, objectives, scripted events, and battles against supernatural forces.

That campaign structure makes Retold approachable for players who want to learn the factions through directed missions. It also gives experienced RTS players a substantial alternative to skirmishes, especially when they want scenario objectives rather than a symmetrical race to destroy an opponent's base.

Skirmish and multiplayer maps provide the long-term strategy loop. Randomly generated battlefields support matches against advanced AI, friends, or competitive opponents, with the usual emphasis on build orders, scouting, map control, counters, and timing attacks. Online PvP, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer are listed PC features.

Arena of the Gods adds a separate challenge format built around 35 mythic skirmishes. It can be played solo or cooperatively, and its scenario-based structure gives the game a more curated alternative to standard random-map matches. It is best understood as a repeatable challenge mode, not a conventional linear campaign replacement.

Current editions and paid content

The Standard Edition provides the base game and its original core pantheons. The Premium Edition adds the Freyr Gods Pack, the Legacy Deity Portrait Pack, the Immortal Pillars expansion, the Heavenly Spear expansion, and an exclusive Tsukuyomi portrait. The Premium Upgrade is aimed at players who already own the base game.

Immortal Pillars expands the roster with Chinese mythology, including a new pantheon, myth units, god powers, and campaign content. Heavenly Spear adds a Japanese pantheon with gods, heroes, yokai, samurai-themed forces, and its own story material. These are substantial faction expansions rather than cosmetic-only add-ons.

The storefront also lists additional paid content, including the New Gods Pack: Demeter, Obsidian Mirror, and smaller content packs such as Heavenly Spear-related and portrait-focused additions. Buyers should distinguish the base game, Premium Edition, Premium Upgrade, Expansion Pass, and individually sold add-ons because the included content is not identical across those options.

Who should play Age of Mythology: Retold?

Retold is a strong fit for PC players who want a traditional RTS with more pronounced faction asymmetry than a purely historical empire builder. It rewards people who enjoy learning technology paths, managing several resource streams, memorizing unit counters, and deciding when a limited god power can produce the greatest advantage.

It is also a good entry point for players who like mythology but do not want a turn-based 4X structure. The campaign teaches the broad systems, while skirmishes and multiplayer offer room to refine openings and experiment with pantheon-specific strategies.

Players seeking a slower settlement-focused RTS may prefer the seasonal economy and worker assignment of deliberate Viking strategy games like Northgard. Retold is more focused on direct military escalation, age advancement, and tactical use of powers than on survival through changing seasons.

It may be a poor fit if you want a character-led action game, a fully customizable 4X empire simulator, or a relaxed city builder. Even its campaign missions eventually expect active army management, production planning, and quick responses to enemy pressure.

PC features, controls, and localization

The PC version is available through Steam and the Xbox app ecosystem, including PC Game Pass access. Steam lists full controller support, a useful option for players who prefer playing an RTS from a couch or handheld setup. Keyboard and mouse remain the natural choice for precise selection, control groups, camera movement, and rapid construction.

Steam also lists Steam Cloud, achievements, Family Sharing, cross-platform multiplayer, and an integrated Scenario Editor. The editor gives the PC version a community-content angle, allowing players to create custom scenarios and mods instead of being limited to the official campaign and standard skirmish maps.

Localization is broad. Steam lists 25 supported languages, with interface and subtitles covering a wider range than the full-audio selection. Full audio is available in languages including English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Latin American Spanish.

For players interested in the broader fantasy RTS tradition, hero-led real-time strategy like Warcraft III: Reforged offers a useful comparison. Retold shares the emphasis on heroes, supernatural units, custom scenarios, and faction identity, but its economy and age progression remain closer to classic empire-building RTS design.

Age of Mythology: Retold FAQ

Is Age of Mythology: Retold a renamed version of another PC game?

No verified rebrand has replaced the current name. The official storefront title is Age of Mythology: Retold. Older references may simply say Age of Mythology or discuss the earlier Extended Edition, but Retold is the current standalone presentation.

What is included in the base game?

The base game includes the core RTS experience, campaigns, skirmishes, multiplayer, Arena of the Gods, the Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Atlantean pantheons, and the PC Scenario Editor. Chinese and Japanese mythology content is associated with paid expansions rather than the original base roster.

Does Retold support online co-op?

Yes. The PC version lists online co-op, online PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer. Arena of the Gods can also be played cooperatively, while the campaign and standard skirmish modes provide the main solo options.

Can you play Age of Mythology: Retold with a controller on PC?

Yes. The official PC listing includes controller support and the publisher describes streamlined controller integration for building, battling, and managing an empire. Keyboard and mouse still offer the most precise control for competitive RTS play.

Does the PC version support mods?

Yes. The PC Scenario Editor is available for creating custom scenarios and mods. This is a meaningful long-term feature for players who want to build their own maps, objectives, and story-driven encounters.

Is Age of Mythology: Retold mainly a campaign game or a multiplayer RTS?

It supports both. The campaign provides a structured introduction across dozens of missions, while randomly generated skirmishes, Arena of the Gods, online co-op, and PvP create the repeatable mastery loop. The central gameplay remains gathering resources, advancing ages, choosing gods, building counters, and timing divine abilities.

One doubt, before there were separate links to the game for download + patches, why did you remove the game links? Or... is it included in the patch?

The torrent already appeared yesterday, and hosting links are usually late.

You must download the last version of Microsoft Visual CC++ 2022, and reboot.

Then, go and click upon «steamclient_loader.exe»

    It works perfectly

I installed the game but it can't start. When I look at the task manager, it shows up and then it closes. I disabled the antivirus and it still doesn't start. Can you post the crack of the game?
