Game Description
Wayfinder PC is a third-person action RPG built around direct combat, character builds, loot collection, and customizable expeditions. The current Steam listing remains Wayfinder, while Wayfinder: Echoes is the name used for the overhaul that changed the original always-online service game into an offline-capable premium RPG with optional three-player co-op. Airship Syndicate now develops and publishes the game.
A third-person ARPG built around repeatable expeditions
Wayfinder takes place in Evenor, a fantasy world damaged by the spreading Gloom. You play as a Wayfinder, a powerful Echo able to enter corrupted regions, defeat hostile creatures, gather materials, and recover equipment. The camera stays behind the character, keeping melee positioning, ranged attacks, dodge timing, and enemy telegraphs easy to read during busy encounters.
The basic loop moves between the hub of Skylight and dangerous areas beyond it. You select a Wayfinder, equip a weapon and accessories, enter a Lost Zone or Hunt, defeat enemies and bosses, collect gear, then return to improve your build. Story quests provide direction, but much of the long-term structure comes from repeating activities for better equipment, crafting resources, and stronger Echo combinations.
Combat is real-time and ability-driven rather than menu-based. Every Wayfinder has a personal ability kit, while weapons add their own attacks and weapon abilities. You can use melee combos, ranged weapons, defensive movement, and special attacks to maintain pressure. Resilience adds a second combat layer: breaking an enemy's resilience can leave it vulnerable, while losing your own resilience makes it easier to stagger.
Wayfinders, weapons, and Echo buildcrafting
The roster is designed around distinct combat identities instead of a single interchangeable protagonist. Some Wayfinders favor close-range aggression, others specialize in ranged pressure, area control, magical effects, or team support. However, the equipment system gives you room to reshape how each character performs, so choosing a Wayfinder does not permanently lock you into one weapon category.
Weapons define a large part of the moment-to-moment feel. They provide different attack patterns, combo routes, statistics, and weapon abilities, while each Wayfinder's affinities can make certain weapon choices more attractive. Weapon progression encourages experimentation because a new blade, firearm, or heavy weapon can change both your damage pattern and your preferred distance from enemies.
The defining build system is the use of Echoes. Wayfinders, weapons, and accessories have Echo slots and capacity limits, and Echoes provide offensive, defensive, or utility bonuses. Slot types matter, so a strong drop is not automatically useful if it does not fit the rest of your setup. Rush Echoes are especially distinctive because they can trigger additional effects after conditions such as dodging, completing a melee combo, using an ability, or landing a particular attack.
Gear improvement is tied to resource gathering, crafting, and Awakening. Upgrading a Wayfinder or weapon can increase its power and expand its build potential. This makes the progression loop more deliberate than simply replacing every item with a higher number: the most useful upgrade is often the one that supports your preferred Echo layout and combat rhythm.
The Gloom Dagger and controlled dungeon runs
The Gloom Dagger is more than a story prop. It is the tool used to access Lost Zones and shape the conditions of an expedition. By combining the dagger with different modifiers, you can influence the enemies, bosses, resources, and challenges that appear inside the Gloom.
This structure gives Wayfinder a repeatable dungeon-crawling identity without making every run identical. You decide whether to pursue a particular material, target a boss, search for equipment, or accept a more dangerous combination of modifiers. The result is a controlled risk-and-reward loop: stronger conditions can make a run more demanding, but they can also make it more relevant to your current build goals.
Alongside Lost Zones, Hunts focus attention on major enemies and boss encounters. Expeditions are better suited to exploration, combat rooms, resource collection, and build testing, while Hunts provide a clearer target and a more concentrated combat challenge. Together, these activities support both short sessions and longer progression-focused play.
Premium content model and what is included
The current PC version is a paid base game rather than the free-to-play service originally associated with Wayfinder. The Echoes transition removed the online account and login requirements for solo play and also removed the former service-style monetization approach. Your single-player progress is stored locally, which is central to the game's offline design.
The Steam listing currently presents one optional Critical Role Supporter Pack as additional content. It is separate from the main game and does not define the core progression model. The main package contains the playable action RPG, its story areas, Wayfinder roster, weapons, Echo systems, Lost Zones, Hunts, crafting, and housing-focused customization.
Housing is an unusual part of the content structure. In addition to collecting combat gear, you can gather apartment decorations and customize your personal space in Skylight. This gives non-combat rewards a clear purpose and adds a quieter collection loop between expeditions.
Who should play Wayfinder on PC?
Wayfinder suits players who want a third-person action RPG with a strong loot loop but do not want every session to depend on a live-service population. The ability to play offline makes it a practical choice for solo players, while optional co-op lets friends join for story missions, Hunts, and expeditions when schedules align.
It is also a good fit for players who enjoy testing builds rather than following one optimal class setup. The interaction between Wayfinder abilities, weapon behavior, affinities, accessories, Echo slots, and Echo capacity creates meaningful room for experimentation. If you prefer a tightly authored RPG with one hero, a fixed weapon, and minimal repetition, the repeatable activity structure may feel less compelling.
Players looking for a compact fantasy party action RPG can compare its cooperative combat and equipment progression with third-person co-op adventures such as The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Wayfinder is less linear and more build-focused, but both games make coordinated combat and character roles central to multiplayer play.
PC features, co-op, and localization
On PC, Wayfinder supports full controller support, keyboard and mouse play, Steam Cloud, achievements, and Remote Play on TV. The game is also designed to be playable offline in single-player mode, including on Steam Deck. Co-op uses a host-based, peer-to-peer structure through the platform rather than the persistent server model associated with the original version.
Co-op supports up to three players, allowing you to drop into a friend's adventure and tackle missions or bosses together. It is not local split-screen, and the current design does not depend on public matchmaking queues for solo progression. That distinction matters: Wayfinder is best understood as a solo RPG with optional online co-op, not as an MMO that happens to permit private play.
The Steam configuration identifies Easy Anti-Cheat among the game's included technologies, even though online requirements were removed for solo play. The storefront lists interface and subtitle support for English, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Spanish variants, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Chinese variants. Full audio is available in several of those languages, including English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and selected Spanish and Chinese options.
Similar PC games and the right expectations
Wayfinder occupies a middle ground between a conventional character action RPG and a repeatable loot-driven co-op game. It is not structured like a pure isometric dungeon crawler, and it is not an always-online MMO anymore. Its strongest identity comes from third-person combat, named heroes, flexible weapons, Echo-based buildcrafting, and Gloom expeditions that can be modified before you enter.
For another fantasy game built around third-person exploration, cooperative combat, and equipment progression, open-world Viking action RPGs such as RUNE II provide a useful comparison. RUNE II is more sandbox-oriented and less focused on instanced expedition modifiers, while Wayfinder offers more structured build experimentation and a clearer solo progression path.
The most accurate expectation is a replayable action RPG with a campaign layer rather than a traditional one-and-done adventure. You return to areas because the next Echo, weapon upgrade, boss material, or modifier combination may complete a build you are still refining.
Wayfinder FAQ
Is the current game called Wayfinder or Wayfinder: Echoes?
The current PC storefront listing is named Wayfinder. Wayfinder: Echoes refers to the major rework that converted the original online service model into an offline-capable premium action RPG with optional co-op.
Can Wayfinder be played completely offline?
Yes. Solo play does not require an online account, login, queue, or persistent server connection. Co-op is optional and uses a host-based connection when you choose to play with friends.
Does Wayfinder support three-player co-op?
Yes. The game supports online co-op for up to three players. It is drop-in/drop-out cooperative play rather than local split-screen multiplayer.
What are Echoes used for in Wayfinder?
Echoes modify Wayfinders, weapons, and accessories through typed slots and capacity limits. They can improve statistics or add conditional effects, allowing you to build around survivability, damage, abilities, weapon behavior, or specific combat triggers.
Is Wayfinder free to play on PC?
No. The current PC version uses a premium buy-to-play model. The Steam listing also offers an optional Critical Role Supporter Pack, but the main progression systems are part of the base game.
Does every Wayfinder use the same weapon?
No. Wayfinders can use different weapon types, and the chosen weapon changes attacks, combos, statistics, and weapon abilities. Character affinities can make some combinations more effective, but the system leaves room to test different pairings.
