Game Description
Blades of Fire is a third-person dark fantasy action-adventure for PC from MercurySteam and 505 Games. Its current PC availability spans Steam and the Epic Games Store under the same name, with no verified rebrand or replacement edition. The central hook is unusual: you do not collect endless weapon drops. You forge, test, maintain, and master the weapons needed to survive.
You play as Aran de Lira, the last warrior able to forge true steel in a world where metal has been turned to stone. The result is a solo adventure built around deliberate melee combat, enemy analysis, exploration, and a highly involved blacksmithing system.
Combat Built Around Weight and Precision
Blades of Fire combat is methodical rather than button-mashing focused. Attacks consume stamina, defensive actions carry a cost, and enemies punish players who commit to long strings without reading the situation.
Aran can dodge, roll, block, and parry. Blocking also helps recover stamina through the Breath of the Defender technique, while a successful parry can create a short period of unlimited stamina. These systems make defense part of the attack cycle instead of a purely reactive escape option.
The attack controls are tied to specific areas of an enemy. You can target the head, torso, or either side of the body, then choose between quick and stronger attacks. This gives positioning a direct mechanical purpose during close-range encounters.
Weapon families also determine whether your attack produces slashing, piercing, or blunt damage. Armor and enemy defenses can make one approach ineffective while another works immediately, so changing weapons is often more valuable than simply attacking harder.
The Forge Is the Main Progression System
The Forge of the Gods is not a conventional crafting menu. You select a forge scroll, choose components and materials, and then shape the hot metal through a timing-based forging process. The quality of the result affects how much punishment the weapon can take before it needs serious attention.
There are seven weapon families: spears, swords, sabers, greatswords, twins, daggers, and polearms. More than 30 forge scrolls provide the structural foundation for different designs, giving the arsenal variety without relying on randomized loot tiers.
Weapon choices influence weight, length, durability, penetration, edge quality, balance, stamina use, and defensive performance. A longer blade may improve reach, while a different cross-section or material can change its cutting power, resistance, or handling.
The forging result is not only about raw damage. It determines how the weapon behaves in combat and how many repairs it can withstand. Weapons degrade during battle, and sharpening them in the field has consequences, so maintenance becomes part of preparation rather than a minor inventory chore.
Players who enjoy the idea of building a personal weapon around a combat role will find more to experiment with here than in a typical action RPG. The system rewards understanding why a blade works, not simply replacing it whenever a higher number appears.
A Cursed World With a Useful Companion
Queen Nerea has cast a spell that turns ordinary steel into stone while her forces use divine metal. Aran's journey through this hostile fantasy world is therefore tied directly to the ability to make weapons that can survive the conflict.
The adventure includes hostile soldiers, trolls, water elementals, and other threats that require different responses. The official game material describes more than 50 enemy types, making enemy recognition and equipment choice important parts of exploration.
Aran is accompanied by Adso de Zelk, a young scholar who records enemy behavior and documents the world. His travel book provides useful observations, while conversations and written discoveries carry much of the setting's history and context.
The narrative is less dependent on constant exposition than many cinematic action games. Players who investigate dialogue, optional information, and Adso's notes will get more from the world than those who move only from one combat encounter to the next.
Version 2.0 and Current PC Content
The current Steam presentation includes Version 2.0, with the same core game available across the supported PC storefronts. Version 2.0 is also available as a free update on the other supported platforms rather than being sold as a separate sequel or remaster.
Major additions include New Game Plus, the Titanium challenge level, new weapon parts and skins for New Game Plus, Elements Transmutation, Photo Mode, and Boss Revival Mode.
Boss Revival Mode allows players to replay boss encounters for rewards, while Adso's Spells add another layer to weapon customization through rewards connected to that mode. The update also adds new achievements and expanded combat presentation details.
The Steam package additionally includes the Adventurer Pack, digital artbook, and original soundtrack. The base game is a paid single-player release, and the current storefront information does not present it as free-to-play or built around a seasonal battle pass.
PC Features, Controls, and Localization
On PC, keyboard and mouse support is available alongside controller support. Steam lists full controller support, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, and achievements, while the 2.0 feature set includes full key remapping for keyboard and mouse control.
The game can be played offline according to the official support information. Steam and Epic are the confirmed PC storefronts, and no current GOG version is listed by the publisher's support material.
Steam also identifies Steam Deck support for the current version. This is useful for players who want to take the solo adventure away from a desktop setup, although the game's precision combat remains best suited to whichever control method feels most comfortable.
The PC interface and subtitle localization covers English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. English is the confirmed full-audio language in the Steam listing.
Who Should Play Blades of Fire?
Blades of Fire suits players who value combat mastery, weapon experimentation, dark fantasy exploration, and a focused solo structure. It is a particularly good fit if the idea of forging a weapon for a specific enemy matters more to you than collecting a large inventory of disposable equipment.
The game is less suitable for players seeking co-op, ranged combat as the main focus, fast arcade-style action, or a conventional loot-driven progression loop. Its difficulty comes from understanding enemy defenses, stamina, timing, and weapon behavior.
Players who enjoy demanding third-person action RPGs may also appreciate story-driven soulslikes such as Lies of P, although Blades of Fire places much more emphasis on physical weapon construction and ongoing blade maintenance.
Similar PC Games and Mechanical Comparisons
The closest comparison is not a direct clone but another dark fantasy action RPG built around deliberate encounters. Punishing third-person soulslikes like Wuchang: Fallen Feathers share the focus on stamina, enemy patterns, evasive timing, and dangerous boss fights.
Blades of Fire differs through its weapon-forging identity. Wuchang emphasizes character progression and supernatural abilities, while MercurySteam's game makes the physical properties of the weapon itself central to both preparation and combat.
It is also better understood as a mastery-driven adventure than a traditional open-world RPG. Exploration, shortcuts, enemy study, forging, repairs, and boss learning form a repeating progression loop instead of constant gear replacement.
