Game Description

Elden Ring Nightreign is a PC third-person action RPG that combines FromSoftware’s demanding combat with a three-player roguelite expedition structure. The current Steam and publisher listings still use the name ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN; there is no verified PC rebrand or replacement edition. It is a standalone game in the Elden Ring universe, not an expansion that requires the original Elden Ring.

A three-day hunt through Limveld

Each expedition sends up to three Nightfarers into Limveld, an altered and unstable region shaped by the forces of Night. The objective is clear: survive two days of exploration, gather enough power and equipment, then defeat the selected Nightlord on the third day.

The map is not a conventional open-world campaign. Locations, enemy groups, rewards, events, and points of interest can change between expeditions, while the Night’s Tide steadily reduces the usable area. Leaving the safe region drains health, so teams must balance exploration against the need to reach the next encounter before the circle closes.

Players begin each run at a low power level and quickly build strength by collecting runes, weapons, talismans, passive effects, and useful items. Defeating enemies and field bosses improves the team for the current expedition, but the run’s temporary equipment and level progression are not carried over as a permanent character build.

Nightfarers, combat roles, and team synergy

Nightreign uses a fixed roster of eight playable Nightfarers rather than the traditional character-creation structure of the main Elden Ring. Each hero has a passive ability, a character skill, and an ultimate art, creating distinct roles without locking the entire team into rigid class boundaries.

Wylder offers an adaptable frontline style, Ironeye specializes in ranged attacks and weak-point pressure, Guardian brings defensive control, Raider uses heavy close-range force, and Recluse converts elemental residues into offensive magic. Duchess focuses on evasive burst damage, while Executor and Revenant provide additional specialist approaches to melee and supernatural combat.

Every Nightfarer can use the weapons found during an expedition, so a character’s identity comes from ability timing and team composition as much as from equipment. A squad may need someone to interrupt a dangerous enemy, someone to exploit a Nightlord’s elemental weakness, and someone who can rescue a downed ally before a failed revival costs the team another level.

This makes cooperative positioning more important than simply stacking damage. Nightreign rewards players who communicate about routes, loot priorities, boss weaknesses, and when to stop exploring. Players who enjoy connected dark-fantasy combat can compare its slower, mastery-focused roots with open-world soulslike action in the original Elden Ring, but Nightreign is much more compressed and run-focused.

What changes between expeditions

Randomization affects the route, enemy presence, rewards, and special events rather than turning Limveld into a completely unrecognizable map. Familiar Elden Ring locations and enemies return in altered combinations, while Shifting Earth events can create larger geographical changes and new tactical problems.

The daily structure gives each expedition a practical rhythm. During the day, the team searches for levels, weapons, passive bonuses, and useful consumables. At night, the shrinking battlefield forces a boss confrontation. A successful team reaches the third day with enough complementary tools to challenge the chosen Nightlord, while a failed expedition still contributes to long-term mastery and progression.

Relics add a persistent layer between runs. These effects can modify a Nightfarer’s starting conditions, improve attributes, enhance abilities, or support a particular elemental or defensive strategy. The system is less about building one permanent character and more about preparing several viable loadouts for different Nightlords and team combinations.

Base game, Deluxe Edition, and The Forsaken Hollows

The standard PC edition contains the standalone game and its core Nightfarer roster, expedition system, Limveld content, and Nightlord encounters. The game is sold as a premium release rather than a free-to-play service, and the storefront does not present its regular progression as a battle-pass model.

The Forsaken Hollows is the separately available expansion. It adds two additional Nightfarers, two third-day bosses, a new Shifting Earth environment, new field bosses, and further points of interest in Limveld. The Deluxe Edition includes the base game, this expansion, a digital artbook, and a mini soundtrack. The Collector’s Edition also includes the DLC alongside its physical and digital bonus contents.

That distinction matters when comparing store packages. The standard edition is enough to access the main expedition loop, while the Deluxe Edition is the complete digital gameplay package for players who want the additional characters, bosses, and environment included from the start.

Who should play Nightreign on PC?

Nightreign is a strong fit for players who want short, repeatable co-op runs, aggressive boss encounters, and a progression system built around learning rather than completing one long campaign. It is especially well suited to groups that can coordinate movement and choose complementary Nightfarers.

It is less suitable for players expecting the open-ended exploration, extensive character creation, quest structure, and uninterrupted world progression of Elden Ring. The expedition timer also changes the mood: careful investigation still matters, but stopping to inspect every corner can leave a team underpowered when the Night’s Tide closes in.

Solo play is available, including an offline solo option, but the balance and ability design are primarily aimed at cooperative groups. There is no official two-player-only mode in the standard ruleset; the intended multiplayer format is a three-person team.

PC features, online requirements, and localization

The PC version supports keyboard and mouse as well as full controller support through Steam. It also supports offline play for solo expeditions, while cooperative multiplayer requires an internet connection. Cross-platform multiplayer is not available, so PC players cannot form official teams with PlayStation or Xbox users.

The Steam edition lists Steam Cloud, Steam Achievements, Family Sharing, and third-party DRM identified as GuardIT. It also uses Easy Anti-Cheat, including kernel-level anti-cheat according to the storefront information. These details are relevant to PC players who prefer offline software, use managed systems, or want to know what remains installed after uninstalling the game.

English is the full-audio language. The interface and subtitles also support Japanese, French, Italian, German, Spanish from Spain, Arabic, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Latin American Spanish, Thai, and Traditional Chinese. The PC edition is therefore broadly localized, but it does not provide a separate voiced language for each subtitle option.

Similar PC games and genre context

Nightreign’s closest comparison is the original Elden Ring, but the two games serve different purposes. Elden Ring emphasizes open-world discovery and long-form build development, while Nightreign compresses those ideas into timed expeditions with randomized conditions and a defined boss target.

Players who prefer the deliberate stamina management and interconnected exploration of earlier FromSoftware games may find traditional third-person soulslike combat in Dark Souls III Deluxe Edition more familiar. Nightreign keeps the attack patterns, dodges, weapon variety, and boss-reading fundamentals, but adds faster routing, team roles, temporary loot, and a persistent relic layer.

The result is not simply Elden Ring with multiplayer added. It is a repeatable co-op action game where route choices, character synergy, and adaptation to the current expedition matter as much as individual execution.

Elden Ring Nightreign FAQ

Is Elden Ring Nightreign a renamed version of Elden Ring?

No. The current PC storefront name remains ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. It is a standalone multiplayer-focused game set in the Elden Ring universe, not a renamed edition of the original Elden Ring and not the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

Can Nightreign be played solo?

Yes. Solo play is supported, including an offline solo mode. However, the game is primarily balanced around three-player expeditions, and some Nightfarer abilities become more effective when coordinated with allies.

Does Nightreign support two-player co-op?

The official multiplayer format is a three-player team. You can play alone or with two other players, but there is no standard official duo queue that changes the expedition rules to support exactly two Nightfarers.

What does The Forsaken Hollows add?

The expansion adds two Nightfarers, two third-day bosses, a new Shifting Earth environment, additional field bosses, and new Limveld points of interest. It is separate from the standard edition and included with the Deluxe Edition.

Does Nightreign have crossplay on PC?

No. PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players cannot join the same official multiplayer session. PC players can play with other PC users through the game’s online systems.

Does the PC version support controllers and offline play?

Yes. Steam lists full controller support, and solo expeditions can be played offline. Online co-op requires an internet connection, while the PC release also uses Easy Anti-Cheat and third-party DRM listed on its storefront page.
