Constance is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer with metroidvania structure and light adventure flavor. You play as a painter who is slipping into madness, trying to find a way out of a world shaped by her own mind. It’s fantasy-leaning, but not in the “knights and dragons” sense - more like places that look and feel like thoughts made physical. And yes, you fight with a brush. That part is not a metaphor.
What you do in Constance
You look at the action from the side. You move through interconnected locations, jump across platforms, avoid traps, and deal with enemies. The flow is classic metroidvania: you push forward, hit obstacles that you can’t fully handle yet, then return later with better tools and abilities. The twist is that almost everything is tied to paint and your brush.
Your brush isn’t just a weapon. It also supports movement. You can use it to gain momentum in mid-air and extend your jumps, which changes how you read rooms. A gap that looks annoying at first can become a clean, confident leap once you start chaining your techniques. It’s that kind of game where your hands learn the timing, not just your brain.
Paint-based combat and puzzles
Combat uses your artistic tools directly. You fight regular enemies and also take on tougher boss encounters. Between fights, you’ll run into puzzles as well. The game leans on the idea that your “painting techniques” are not separate systems - they’re the same set of tools applied to traversal, fighting, and problem solving. If you like when a game gives you one mechanic and asks you to get clever with it, you’ll feel at home.
- Jumping and platforming with brush-assisted movement
- Dodging hazards and navigating environmental obstacles
- Fighting enemies and bosses using painting tools
- Solving puzzles on the way through connected areas
Risk, consequences, and that uneasy feeling
Constance doesn’t let you spam your best tricks without thinking. Using painting techniques gradually damages your paint. If it becomes fully corrupted, you get negative effects applied to your character. So you’re not only asking “can I make this jump?” or “can I win this fight?”, but also “what will it cost me if I keep doing it this way?” It’s a neat pressure valve. Not super loud, but always present.
Death also comes with a decision. After you fall, you choose whether to restart from a checkpoint or pay a price to continue from the place where you failed. That choice can change the mood of a session. Sometimes you’ll take the safe reset. Sometimes you’ll stubbornly pay up because you were right there. (We’ve all been there.)
Progression: inspirations, sketches, upgrades
As you move forward, you find inspirations. These let you create sketches in a journal, which unlock upgrades and ability modifications. It’s a clean way to frame progression: your character improves because she finds ideas and turns them into something usable. More upgrades mean you can handle bigger challenges, reach deeper routes, and return to earlier spaces with new options.
The locations you visit are varied and interconnected, and their look is tied to the protagonist’s mental health and backstory. So exploration is not only about map coverage. It’s also about seeing how the world shifts around the state of mind you’re walking through. If you enjoy when environments feel like they’re telling you something, you’ll likely pay attention to the details.
Visual style and tone
The game uses a cartoon-like visual style. That can create an interesting contrast with the theme of losing stability. Bright lines, strange scenes, and a mind that’s not exactly cooperating - it’s an easy setup for moments that feel both playful and uncomfortable.
Is Constance for you?
Pick Constance if you want a metroidvania that mixes action platforming with a strong, mechanic-driven theme: paint as movement, paint as combat, paint as problem solving, and paint as a resource that can turn against you. You’ll explore connected areas, take on bosses, and make small but meaningful choices around corruption and death recovery. If that sounds like your kind of tension, Constance is worth a look.
