StarRupture (previously known as Chimera) is a first-person sci-fi survival action game for PC from the Polish studio Creepy Jar, the creators of Green Hell. You are dropped onto an alien planet that looks calm at first glance, but keeps getting hit by recurring cataclysms linked to a dangerous star. It is the kind of place where the weather is not just background - it is a threat you plan around.
You play as a convict sent from Earth as part of a research expedition. Your job is simple on paper: learn the world and set up a base that can withstand the climate and the constant pressure from hostile creatures. In practice? You will be busy. A lot.
What you do in StarRupture
The game is built around a mix of survival routines, firefights, and base development. You see everything from an FPP perspective, and you are expected to handle problems on multiple levels at once. One moment you are scouting a new area. The next, you are thinking: do you have food, do you have a safe place to sleep, and is your base ready for whatever the planet throws at you?
- Explore a fully open world with resources, locations, and secrets
- Fight enemies using futuristic weapons
- Keep your character alive by managing basic needs like hunger and sleep
- Mine and process resources to grow your base and production
- Research and unlock technologies to survive harsh conditions
A planet that does not stay the same
The setting is a key part of the experience. The planet is repeatedly torn apart by cataclysms, especially ones tied to fire and ice that can damage the environment. That means you are not just learning a map once and calling it a day. Conditions change, and you adapt. Sometimes it feels like the world is quietly daring you to get comfortable - and then punishing you for it.
The developers also focused on weather that keeps shifting, so your plans need to be flexible. If you like games where preparation matters, this angle is worth paying attention to.
Base building and an industrial chain
The biggest difference compared to Green Hell is how central your base is. In StarRupture you do not just craft a few tools and move on. You build and develop a larger facility, fed by extraction and processing. You mine natural resources, process them, and manage them so your base becomes a working system rather than a pile of random structures.
It is not only about comfort. Technology matters here. You unlock new tech that can protect you and your base from the recurring disasters. So the base is both your home and your long-term survival plan.
Bigger base, bigger problems
There is a nice bit of risk baked into growth. The more advanced and larger your outpost becomes, the more attention it can attract from hostile alien creatures. So expansion has a price. You can go big, but you will need the firepower and the defenses to back it up.
Solo or co-op (up to 4 players)
StarRupture is designed with cooperation in mind. You can play through the story campaign alone or in co-op with up to four players. If you go solo, AI companions can take the place of teammates. Either way, the structure stays open: you have freedom to explore the world at your own pace, and you can keep playing even after finishing the main story thread.
In co-op, expect the usual fun decisions: who goes out to scout, who keeps production running, and who stays close to defend the base when things get loud. And yes, things can get loud.
Tech and presentation
The game uses Unreal Engine 5, which the team used to implement solutions that were not possible in their earlier project - both visually and mechanically. It is also in Early Access, with an Early Access release date of 6 January 2026.
Is StarRupture worth your time?
If you want a survival game where you are not just surviving day to day, but also building a growing industrial base under pressure, StarRupture has a clear direction. You explore, you extract, you build, and you defend - while a planet that keeps burning and freezing tries to mess up your routine. Sounds like your kind of problem to solve?
