The 9th Charnel is a first-person psychological survival horror where you’re not “saving the world” - you’re trying to make it to the next minute. You play as Michael J. Jones, a geneticist from the Epsilon Research Institute. You head out to a nearby nature reserve with two fellow researchers. The trip ends in an accident. You come to alone in the wilderness, and it doesn’t take long to realize you’re not the only thing out there.

The reserve is crawling with terrifying monsters and fanatical cultists. Your goal is simple and stressful in the best way: survive, find your friends, and escape. If the title sounds mysterious, that’s fitting - this is not a cheerful hike. It’s a place where every path forward feels like a bad idea, and you still have to pick one.

What you do in The 9th Charnel

You explore locations from an FPP perspective, pushing deeper through the reserve while danger keeps checking in. Sometimes it’s a noise behind you. Sometimes it’s a figure in the distance. Either way, you’re moving through hostile spaces, trying to keep your head straight.

Progress isn’t just about finding the right door. Puzzles are part of the rhythm here. You stop, look around, piece things together, and then you get to move on. It’s a nice change of pace - until you remember you’re doing it in a place where being slow can get you killed.

Fight, sneak, or just get out

The 9th Charnel lets you face enemies directly, but it doesn’t pretend that’s always the smart option. You can use firearms you acquire as you progress, including pistols, shotguns, and rifles. When it works, it’s satisfying. When it doesn’t… well, you learn quickly that bravery and empty magazines don’t mix.

Stealth is often the better answer. You can slip behind enemies, move quietly, and avoid turning every encounter into a loud mess. And if you’re spotted? Sometimes the plan becomes a fast retreat. It’s not glamorous, but it’s survival horror. Getting away alive counts as a win.

Inventory and survival pressure

A key part of the tension comes from the inventory system. You can’t carry everything, so you have to make choices. Do you bring more ammo, or keep space for something that might solve a puzzle later? Do you spend resources now, or save them for whatever you suspect is waiting deeper in the reserve?

  • Manage limited supplies and think ahead.
  • Pick when combat is worth the risk.
  • Use stealth when direct fights feel like a trap.

Story setup: science meets the unknown

You’re not a soldier. You’re a scientist, and that matters in how the situation feels. The horror hits differently when your job was supposed to be research, not surviving a nightmare. After the crash, you’re pushed into a harsh new routine: search for your colleagues, read the environment, and accept that the reserve is controlled by forces you didn’t come here to study.

Monsters and cultists make the reserve feel like two threats layered on top of each other. One is raw fear. The other feels disturbingly intentional. You keep moving because stopping doesn’t answer the big questions: where are your friends, and how do you get out?

Who this is for

If you like survival horror that makes you choose between action and caution, you’ll feel at home. If you enjoy first-person exploration with puzzles breaking up the panic, it fits. And if you’re the type who thinks, “I’ll just take one more step and check that corner,” The 9th Charnel knows exactly how to reward that curiosity with trouble.

In the end, The 9th Charnel is about moving forward through a nature reserve that wants you gone - or worse, wants you to stay.
