Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a remastered third-person action-adventure originally released in 2003, and the fifth entry in the Legacy of Kain series. You return to Nosgoth for a story driven by the tension between free will and fate, with two playable leads and a mix of combat, exploration, and environmental puzzles.

Play as Kain and Raziel

You don’t stick to one viewpoint. You alternate between Kain and Raziel, and the game leans into their differences. Both wield the legendary Soul Reaver in their own way and both can get into fast, combo-focused fights. You also build up a special power that can be unleashed as a strong area attack - useful when a room gets crowded.

• Kain: uses pyrokinesis, can leap large gaps, and can transform into a swarm of bats.
• Raziel: can swim and shift into the spectral realm to bypass enemies and obstacles.
• Telekinesis: available to both - Raziel gains it during the adventure, while Kain has it from the start.

Combat, puzzles, and grim places to explore

You move through ruined cities, ancient temples, and towering strongholds. Between fights with enemies like demons, warrior-priests, and vampire hunters, you tackle environmental puzzles. Some rooms are the kind that make you pause for a second and think, "Alright, what does this switch really do?"

Your progression is tied to survival and resource management in a very character-specific way. You extend your health and kinetic power meters by collecting special runes. To refill them, you either devour enemy souls as Raziel or drink blood as Kain.

What the remaster changes

This edition focuses on modern comfort without forcing you to abandon the original look. You get updated HD visuals with improved resolution, modernized models and textures, and better lighting. Controls and the game camera have been refined, and you can toggle between the HD and original presentation at any time.

Story setup (no deep spoilers)

The story takes place directly after the events of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2. Kain saves Raziel from being consumed by the Soul Reaver, causing a time paradox that shakes the structure of destiny and separates them again. Kain searches for a way out of an ancient cycle of manipulation, while Raziel is drawn in by the Elder God, who claims to reveal the truth of Raziel’s purpose. Play the previous adventures in the Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered series.
