Esoteric Ebb is an isometric RPG set in a bizarre post-arcanepunk fantasy world. You play as the Cleric, a specialist in esoteric incidents and, to put it lightly, a not exactly glamorous government operative. Your case starts badly: you wake up in a morgue, then get sent to investigate an explosion in the city of Norvik just five days before its first-ever election.
Esoteric Ebb and the mystery of Norvik
The heart of the game is investigation, dialogue, and choice. Norvik is not just a backdrop. It is the whole stage. You move through its streets, towers, and tunnels, meet its residents, and deal with factions trying to shape the city in their own image. Devils, drunk sphinxes, zombies, and other strange beings are part of everyday life here. Yes, it is that kind of place.
Your job is to uncover who caused the tea shop explosion and restore order. Simple on paper. Less simple when nobody wants the mystery solved and you have no real backup. As you explore, you talk to NPCs, gather information, and decide how to handle the groups pulling the strings behind the scenes. Sometimes you cooperate. Sometimes you manipulate them. Sometimes you probably make things worse. That is part of the fun.
Choices, dice, and failure that keeps the story moving
Esoteric Ebb clearly draws inspiration from Disco Elysium and tabletop role-playing games. Many actions are decided by dice rolls, and your decisions can push the story in very different directions. Importantly, failure is not treated like a dead end. A bad roll can open a new path, create a more awkward scene, or lead to results that are more interesting than a clean success. If you like RPGs where mistakes become part of your story, this matters a lot.
The game also leans hard into deep, branching dialogue. You are often choosing not just what to do, but what kind of Cleric you want to be. Competent? Reckless? Manipulative? A complete mess? The setup seems happy to support all of those.
Stats in your head and powers that change conversations
Your character stats do more than raise numbers. They take part in internal debates inside the protagonist's head, offering competing viewpoints and interrupting key moments. This gives your choices extra flavor and can shape how you approach quests and conversations.
As you progress, you unlock powers that expand your options in major ways. You can control minds, detect secrets, or speak with the living and the dead. These abilities are not just combat tools. They open unique narrative routes and let you solve problems in unusual ways.
There is also The Questing Tree, a system that combines quest log, skill tree, and mind map. It ties character development to story progression and changes how your Cleric plays over time.
What gameplay feels like in Esoteric Ebb
Most of the experience revolves around exploration, conversations, questing, and navigating political tension in Norvik. Combat exists, but it is presented as a last resort. When violence does happen, encounters play out in turn-based form, with dice rolls still influencing the outcome.
- Isometric exploration of the city of Norvik
- Branching dialogue with many choices
- Dice-roll checks inspired by tabletop RPGs
- Faction juggling and shifting alliances
- Reality-bending Cleric powers
- Turn-based encounters used sparingly
If you are looking for constant action, this may not be that kind of RPG. If you want a game where talking, investigating, role-playing, and embracing weird outcomes matter, Esoteric Ebb looks much more promising.
In short, Esoteric Ebb seems aimed at players who enjoy story-heavy RPGs, unusual worldbuilding, and systems that let failure become part of the adventure instead of a restart screen. If that sounds like your thing, Norvik might be worth stepping into.
