Dragonkin: The Banished is an isometric action RPG set in a dark fantasy world ruined by dragons. You pick a hero touched by dragon blood, head into battle, collect loot, and shape your build through interconnected upgrades. If you like character progression with a bit of planning behind it, this one clearly leans that way. Much like in Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, the open-world dragon hunting RPG.

What you do in Dragonkin: The Banished

You explore hostile regions, take on quests, and fight waves of enemies in fast real-time combat. The journey leads you through varied areas like swamps, tundra, and volcanic wastelands, so the setting does not stay in one visual lane for too long. Your main goal is simple enough: hunt dangerous dragon creatures and push toward the Dragon Lords.

At the start, you choose from four heroes built around different combat styles. You can go up close with the Knight or Barbarian, or keep some distance with the Oracle or Archer. Their powers are tied to distinct elements and tools, which gives each class a clearer role from the beginning.

Classes and combat style

  • Barbarian - melee fighter with ice powers
  • Oracle - ranged combat using electricity and water
  • Knight - fire-based warrior with a lance
  • Archer - ranged hunter using poison

That lineup sounds classic, but the elemental themes help each hero stand apart a bit.

The upgrade system and build synergies

The most notable mechanic here is the Ancestral Grid, also described as the Plan of the Ancestors. As you level up and gain skills from battles, you place upgrades and modifiers into a grid. These pieces interact with each other, creating synergies that can change how your character performs. So you are not just picking isolated bonuses - you are building combinations.

This matters if you enjoy tuning a character instead of only chasing bigger numbers. The system seems designed to let you adapt your hero to your preferred style, whether you want something safer at range or more aggressive up close.

Your city is more than a menu

Dragonkin: The Banished also gives you a city to develop during the adventure. This settlement acts as your base, and its growth depends on your decisions and progress. You build new structures, improve existing ones, attract residents, and unlock extra services and equipment options. Fans of dark fantasy base-building may also want to try GOD FORSAKEN.

It is a nice change of rhythm. Fight, return, upgrade, head back out. Simple loop, but often effective.

Solo or co-op

You can play Dragonkin: The Banished alone or with others. Local play supports two players on a shared screen, while online co-op supports up to four players. Importantly, the adventure is designed to be playable in co-op from the city hub through endgame activities, so multiplayer does not look like an afterthought.

If you usually enjoy action RPGs more with friends, that will probably be one of the main reasons to keep an eye on it.

Should you keep Dragonkin: The Banished on your radar?

If you want an isometric hack and slash with dark fantasy flavor, distinct hero classes, a synergy-driven progression system, and a city-building layer, Dragonkin: The Banished has a clear hook. It is also set up for both solo play and co-op, which gives you some flexibility. Before release, the biggest appeal is easy to spot: you hunt dragons, refine your build, and steadily turn your hub into something more useful. For many players, that is already a solid reason to check whether Dragonkin: The Banished fits their style.
