Game Description
Yakuza 0 PC is a story-driven action-adventure RPG with real-time beat-'em-up combat, exploration, minigames, and two connected protagonists. The current Steam edition is Yakuza 0 Director's Cut, which replaced the original PC listing for new purchases on December 8, 2025. It adds new cutscenes, English voice acting, expanded subtitle support, the online co-op Red Light Raid mode, and the song Bubble, which was absent from the original western release.
The original Yakuza 0 remains playable for people who already own it, but it is no longer the current purchase option on Steam. The two editions use separate save data, so new players should treat Yakuza 0 Director's Cut as the active PC version rather than assuming the legacy listing is still available.
A crime drama built around two playable lives
Set in Japan during the late-1980s economic boom, Yakuza 0 follows Kazuma Kiryu in Kamurocho and Goro Majima in Sotenbori. Kiryu is a young member of the Dojima Family who becomes a murder suspect after a routine debt collection ends with his mark dead. Majima, a former yakuza serving as manager of the cabaret club Grand, receives an order that could determine whether he returns to the Tojo Clan.
The campaign alternates between the two characters instead of combining them into a single party. Each storyline has its own tone, supporting cast, district, business activity, and combat identity, while the main plot gradually connects their separate conflicts. This structure gives the game a strong narrative rhythm: intense crime drama can be followed by a ridiculous substory, karaoke session, or arcade distraction without breaking the overall design.
Yakuza 0 is technically a prequel, but it is also designed as an accessible entry point. Players do not need to know the later history of Kiryu or Majima to understand the central conspiracy, although familiarity with the wider Like a Dragon series will add context to several character moments.
Real-time brawling with six fighting styles
Combat takes place from a third-person perspective and focuses on close-range street fights. Kiryu and Majima can switch between their available styles during battle, changing their movement, attacks, defensive options, and use of nearby objects. Encounters reward positioning, crowd control, evasion, grabs, weapon pickups, and well-timed Heat Actions that turn environmental objects into brutal finishing moves.
Kiryu's starting styles are Brawler, Rush, and Beast. Brawler is a balanced hand-to-hand option, Rush emphasizes quick punches and footwork, and Beast uses heavy attacks and automatically picks up nearby weapons. Majima uses Thug, Slugger, and Breaker. Thug is his flexible street-fighting style, Slugger centers on a baseball bat, and Breaker turns breakdancing movement into wide-area attacks.
Money replaces conventional experience points as the main upgrade currency. Winning fights, completing activities, and progressing through side content provides cash that can be invested into each character's skill trees. The result is a progression system where earning, spending, and protecting money are part of the same gameplay loop.
Powerful roaming enemies known as Mr. Shakedown can take a character's cash after a defeat, but defeating them can recover the lost money along with additional winnings. This creates a risk-and-reward layer that makes carrying a large bankroll meaningful even when the next story objective is only a few streets away.
Businesses, substories, and a crowded city sandbox
Yakuza 0's districts are compact but densely packed with optional activities. You can visit restaurants, bars, arcades, batting centers, karaoke venues, disco clubs, casinos, gambling halls, and other entertainment spots. These are not just decorative locations: many provide stat benefits, completion objectives, characters, or short challenges that feed into the wider progression system.
Kiryu's major side activity is Real Estate Royale. He manages a property business in Kamurocho, acquires establishments, recruits advisers, and competes against the Five Billionaires for control of the district's commercial power. It is a strategic management layer built around property income, staff selection, and timed collection cycles.
Majima's equivalent is Cabaret Club Czar. In Sotenbori, he helps the Grand survive by recruiting hostesses, arranging club shifts, responding to customer demands, and challenging rival managers known as the Five Stars. The business campaign gives Majima a different kind of progression and reinforces the contrast between his public persona and the choices he makes in the main story.
The game's Substories are a major reason to explore rather than rush between story markers. They range from serious personal problems to deliberately absurd errands, often introducing memorable civilians, unusual minigames, or rewards that cannot be found through the main campaign alone. The Completion List gives players a structured way to track activities across adventure, combat, business, and minigames.
Content model and current PC edition
Yakuza 0 Director's Cut is a standalone paid PC game rather than a free-to-play service. The current Steam package contains the main campaign, both character arcs, the full collection of side activities, the original combat systems, and the Director's Cut additions in one purchase.
The most important additions are narrative and multiplayer focused. New cutscenes expand parts of the story, while Red Light Raid adds an online cooperative mode separate from the single-player campaign. English voice acting is also included, alongside Japanese and Simplified Chinese full audio and a broader range of interface and subtitle languages.
The original western version's song Bubble is included in the Director's Cut. Players who own the legacy Yakuza 0 edition should also note that the newer game does not inherit its save files, so progress must be started separately in the current storefront version.
Who should play Yakuza 0 on PC?
Yakuza 0 is a strong fit for players who want a long-form crime story with a deliberately uneven mix of serious drama, comic side quests, and arcade-style distractions. It suits people who enjoy real-time brawler combat, character-driven storytelling, dense urban exploration, and progression systems that reward wandering off the critical path.
The game is especially appealing if you like switching between very different activities without changing titles. One session can involve a tense boss fight, a property-management cycle, a karaoke song, a pocket racing event, and several substories. That variety is the point, but it also means the experience is less focused than a pure action game or a tightly structured crime thriller.
Players looking for a primarily stealth-based adventure, a realistic open-world simulation, or a conventional party-based RPG should set expectations accordingly. Yakuza 0 has RPG progression, but its combat is real-time and its world is built around authored districts rather than a vast continuous map.
PC features, controls, and localization
The current Steam edition supports full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers through Steam Input. It also includes Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, Steam Trading Cards, Family Sharing, adjustable difficulty, and custom volume controls. Steam lists the game as Steam Deck Verified.
Steam is the required PC storefront and launcher for the current edition. The listing identifies a third-party EULA and does not identify a separate anti-cheat system. No dedicated-server tools or mod-support feature is listed as an official storefront feature.
The Director's Cut supports English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese for interface and subtitles. Full audio is available in English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese, making the current version substantially broader for players who want localization beyond the original western release.
Players who prefer a related RGG Studio crime game with investigation systems and third-person brawling can compare its structure with detective action adventures like Judgment. The two games share Kamurocho's urban setting and close-range combat DNA, but Judgment replaces Yakuza 0's dual-protagonist crime saga with a detective-focused investigation loop.
Yakuza 0 FAQ
Is Yakuza 0 still available on Steam?
The original Yakuza 0 listing is no longer available for new Steam purchases. It was replaced by Yakuza 0 Director's Cut on December 8, 2025. Existing owners of the original can continue to download and play it, subject to their account library and platform access.
What is the current PC name for Yakuza 0?
The current PC storefront name is Yakuza 0 Director's Cut. The legacy product is still commonly called Yakuza 0, which is why both names appear in searches, guides, libraries, and community discussions.
Does Yakuza 0 Director's Cut include multiplayer?
Yes. The Director's Cut adds the online cooperative Red Light Raid mode. The main story remains a single-player campaign built around Kiryu and Majima, so co-op does not replace the core narrative experience.
Is Yakuza 0 a turn-based RPG?
No. Yakuza 0 is a third-person action-adventure RPG with real-time beat-'em-up combat. Turn-based battles are associated with later mainline Like a Dragon entries, not this game.
What makes Yakuza 0's combat different?
Both protagonists use multiple switchable fighting styles. Kiryu and Majima each have three main styles, with different strengths such as speed, crowd control, weapon use, or wide-area attacks. Money-based upgrades and Heat Actions add progression and tactical variety to the street fights.
Is Yakuza 0 a good starting point for the series?
Yes. Its prequel setting introduces Kiryu, Majima, Kamurocho, and the series' mixture of crime drama and eccentric side content without requiring players to know earlier plot events. It is also a useful starting point for players who want real-time combat before moving to the turn-based Like a Dragon games.
