Game Description

Space Hulk on PC is now listed on Steam as Space Hulk (Classic), a 3D turn-based tactical strategy game based on Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 board game. Developed by Full Control Studios and published by SNEG, it places a small squad of Blood Angels Space Marine Terminators inside the derelict Sin of Damnation, where every corridor can become a firing lane, ambush point, or death trap.

This is the original digital adaptation, not Space Hulk: Ascension, Space Hulk: Tactics, or Space Hulk: Deathwing. The current Steam release bundles the base game with its campaign and cosmetic add-ons, updates the interface for modern Windows systems, and removes online multiplayer from the standard branch.

How Space Hulk (Classic) Plays

Space Hulk is built around asymmetric turn-based tactics. The Terminators are slow, heavily armoured, and effective with ranged weapons, while the Genestealers are fast melee attackers that become dangerous once they reach close quarters. The two sides do not simply trade equivalent attacks. They follow different movement patterns, weapon priorities, and tactical objectives.

Each mission takes place inside a tightly constrained network of corridors and rooms. Your squad must advance through the hulk, secure objectives, destroy targets, recover relics, or survive an infestation while protecting vulnerable members of the team. Movement is deliberate, and the narrow layout makes squad order just as important as weapon choice.

The core resource is action economy. Terminators spend action points to move, turn, fire, open or close doors, and engage enemies in melee. Command points provide limited flexibility when a standard turn is not enough, allowing a carefully planned response to an unexpected threat or a critical opportunity.

Overwatch is one of the defining mechanics. A Terminator can spend actions to establish a guarded firing position, automatically attacking Genestealers that move into view during the opposing turn. Overwatch creates kill zones, but it is not a guaranteed solution. Weapon jams, poor positioning, blind corners, and multiple attack routes can still collapse a defensive plan.

The tactical view presents the squad, the surrounding rooms, and the hulk's maze-like structure in 3D. You are constantly reading lines of sight, door placement, squad spacing, and likely approach routes rather than simply selecting the most powerful attack available.

Terminator Roles And Genestealer Pressure

The Blood Angels force is built around distinct Terminator loadouts. Standard bolter-equipped Marines provide dependable ranged fire, while sergeants and specialist units give the squad different answers to close combat, armoured targets, and crowded corridors.

Heavy weapons change how a squad controls space. A storm bolter can maintain sustained ranged pressure, while flamers are useful for denying routes and punishing clusters of Genestealers. Melee specialists can hold a doorway or protect a vulnerable flank, but they are exposed when fighting without supporting fire.

The Genestealer AI creates pressure through numbers, speed, and uncertainty. Enemies can emerge from several directions, forcing you to avoid overextending a single Terminator or leaving a rear corridor unguarded. A squad that advances too quickly may reach an objective only to discover that its retreat route is already compromised.

Doors are tactical tools rather than background objects. Closing one can buy time, protect a flank, or limit the number of enemies that can attack at once. Opening one can reveal a useful route or expose the squad to a threat that was previously hidden from view.

The result is a game about firing lanes, controlled movement, and disciplined formation. Players who enjoy close-quarters tactical combat in a Warhammer setting may also appreciate claustrophobic Genestealer battles in Space Hulk: Deathwing Enhanced Edition, although Deathwing is a first-person action game rather than a turn-based board-game adaptation.

Campaign Content And Included Add-Ons

The main single-player experience follows the Blood Angels through the Sin of Damnation campaign. It includes three prequel missions alongside the twelve missions from the classic board game, giving the campaign a clear narrative structure while preserving the original scenario framework.

The current Space Hulk (Classic) release includes the base game and six add-ons. These are the Harbinger of Torment Campaign, Defilement of Honour Campaign, Sword of Halcyon Campaign, Space Wolves Chapter, Behemoth Skin, and Kraken Skin content.

The campaign add-ons expand the mission lineup, while the Space Wolves Chapter add-on provides an alternative chapter identity for players who want more variety than the Blood Angels presentation. The Behemoth and Kraken items are cosmetic skin content rather than separate campaigns.

This is a focused tactical campaign, not a broad squad-management RPG. Its appeal comes from replaying scenarios with better positioning, learning the board layouts, and understanding how to conserve actions under pressure. It does not offer the expanded progression, multiple chapters, and large mission structure associated with Space Hulk: Ascension.

Multiplayer And PC Features

The current Steam edition supports local hot-seat multiplayer, allowing one player to command the Terminators while another controls the Genestealers on the same PC. This mode is closer to the tabletop structure than a conventional cooperative campaign because the opposing side is controlled directly by another person.

Steam Remote Play Together is also listed as a supported feature, giving players a way to share the local multiplayer session remotely through Steam. The standard re-release does not support online multiplayer matchmaking or a separate online multiplayer mode.

Steam also lists achievements, trading cards, Family Sharing, and Steam Cloud. The updated interface scales up to 4K resolution, which improves readability on modern displays without changing the underlying board-game-inspired structure.

The current branch is intended for modern Windows systems. Native Linux and Mac support was removed from this re-release, while the previous version remains available through the game's Steam Legacy branch. Players looking for the older platform configuration should therefore check which branch they are using before starting a campaign.

The Steam listing identifies interface support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, and Polish. English is the listed full-audio language. The game does not advertise dedicated cabinet support, native ultrawide support, mod tools, or a controller-specific feature set, so keyboard and mouse should be treated as the safest expected input choice.

Who Should Play Space Hulk?

Space Hulk (Classic) is a strong fit for players who want a faithful digital board-game conversion, compact tactical scenarios, and a hostile environment where a single mistake can destroy an otherwise stable plan. Warhammer 40,000 fans will recognize the Blood Angels, Terminator armour, Genestealers, and relic-hunting premise immediately.

It also suits players who enjoy learning a ruleset through repetition. The game rewards cautious movement, deliberate overwatch placement, and an understanding of how doors and corridor width shape the battle. The most satisfying victories usually come from preventing a crisis several turns before it becomes visible.

Players seeking fast shooting, a large strategic map, deep character builds, or modern online co-op should look elsewhere. The current edition's multiplayer is local rather than online, the squad is small, and the campaign is structured around authored missions instead of procedural runs or open-ended exploration.

For a more puzzle-like science-fiction tactics experience based on positioning and enemy movement, turn-based alien battles in Into the Breach provide a useful contrast. Into the Breach is more abstract and deterministic, while Space Hulk emphasizes line-of-sight control, hidden threats, weapon jams, and the danger of melee contact.
