Game Description
Worms W.M.D is a PC turn-based artillery strategy game from Team17 that combines destructible 2D battlefields with classic weapons, vehicle combat, building interiors, and a deeper crafting system. The current PC storefront name remains Worms W.M.D; it has not been replaced by a renamed or definitive Steam edition. It is also distinct from the mobile product Worms W.M.D: Mobilize.
Each match is built around short, decisive turns. Move a worm across a deformable landscape, account for distance and terrain, select the right weapon, and try to eliminate the opposing teams before your own squad is wiped out or sent into the water. The basic rules are easy to understand, but wind, destructible cover, limited movement time, weapon physics, and the risk of damaging your own team create a substantial tactical layer.
Classic Worms tactics with heavier battlefield tools
The game uses a side-on 2D perspective rather than the fully 3D camera found in Worms Ultimate Mayhem. That keeps aiming readable while preserving the series' familiar platforming, rope movement, jumping, digging, and terrain destruction. Team17 describes the underlying design as a recreation of classic Worms physics and gameplay, including the returning Ninja Rope.
Its arsenal contains more than 80 weapons and utilities, mixing returning favorites with newer tools. The familiar Holy Hand Grenade, Concrete Donkey, Bazooka, and Sheep remain part of the strategic vocabulary, while newer options and weapon variations reward players who experiment with timing, area damage, and environmental positioning.
Worms are not limited to walking and firing. Vehicles such as tanks, helicopters, and mechs change how a turn is planned, while mounted weapons offer additional firing positions around the map. Enterable buildings provide protection from direct attacks and create new opportunities for ambushes, although using them effectively requires understanding entrances, sightlines, and the surrounding terrain.
Crafting changes the value of every turn
The defining addition is in-match weapon crafting. Crafting crates drop during battles, allowing players to collect materials and produce upgraded versions of familiar weapons. Examples include modified Electric Sheep, Bazooka, and Mine variants. This creates a second decision layer: use a conventional weapon immediately, or spend time collecting resources for a more specialized attack later.
Crafting is especially important in longer multiplayer battles because it changes how players value movement and crate control. A worm that reaches a useful crate may gain access to a stronger tactical option, but moving toward it can expose the squad to a counterattack. The system is not a separate character-progression tree; it is a match-level resource loop tied directly to positioning and risk.
The Forts Mode update adds another objective structure. Instead of focusing only on eliminating every opposing worm, teams choose forts, select an upgrade, defend their own stronghold, and attempt to destroy the enemy fort. This gives defensive placement, long-range weapons, and sustained pressure more importance than they have in a standard deathmatch.
Campaign, training, challenges, and custom battles
Solo players receive 30 campaign levels with increasing difficulty, supported by training missions and challenge content. The campaign is not a traditional character-driven adventure. It is a sequence of tactical scenarios designed to teach movement, weapon behavior, vehicles, buildings, and the consequences of poor positioning.
The single-player structure works best as a mastery loop. Early missions introduce the rules, later scenarios demand more accurate shots and better route planning, and challenge stages test specific skills under tighter conditions. Players who want a long narrative campaign may find the format limited, but those who enjoy score attacks, puzzle-like combat setups, and repeat attempts have more to work with.
Custom matches are where the sandbox becomes most flexible. You can play against computer-controlled teams, configure local battles, or create online games around different combinations of weapons, terrain, vehicles, and rules. The result is less about a fixed competitive ladder and more about creating memorable situations with friends.
Multiplayer and couch play on PC
Online PvP and shared or split-screen local multiplayer are supported on PC. Team17's description allows battles with up to five opponents and up to eight worms per team, giving the game a larger multiplayer scale than a simple two-player duel. Ranked play is also listed among the available online options.
Local multiplayer remains one of the strongest reasons to play Worms W.M.D on a shared screen. The turn-based structure makes passing control practical, while the mixture of familiar weapons and unpredictable physics creates room for both serious tactical planning and deliberate chaos. Steam Remote Play Together is also listed as a PC feature, allowing supported local-style sessions to be shared online.
Players looking for a different branch of the same series can compare it with 2D turn-based worm warfare with class-based abilities in Worms: Revolution Collection. Worms W.M.D is the more direct choice for players who specifically want vehicles, crafting, buildings, and a closer return to classic artillery handling.
PC features, controls, and platform support
The Steam version includes Steam Workshop, Steam Cloud, achievements, leaderboards, and Remote Play features. Workshop support is particularly relevant because Team17 added a PC editor for creating custom worm hats and usable buildings, allowing community-made content to appear in single-player and multiplayer modes.
Full controller support is listed on the Steam storefront, although Team17's support documentation identifies Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Steam Controller configurations as the officially supported PC controller combinations. Keyboard and mouse controls remain available, and the game is designed around direct aiming, movement, camera control, and weapon selection rather than a traditional real-time action interface.
The Steam version uses the Steam client and its associated online services for features such as Workshop, Cloud, Remote Play, and leaderboards. No separate anti-cheat system is prominently advertised for the PC edition, so competitive play is best understood as a traditional hosted Worms environment rather than a heavily protected esports platform.
Steam lists nine supported interface, audio, and subtitle languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese-Brazil, Russian, Polish, and Simplified Chinese. The PC version is therefore localized beyond English, with full audio and subtitle support shown for those listed languages.
Who should play Worms W.M.D?
Worms W.M.D is a strong fit for players who enjoy turn-based artillery, destructible environments, local multiplayer, and games where a single well-judged shot can reverse the entire match. It also suits returning Worms players who want the classic 2D formula expanded with modern systems rather than converted into a fully 3D experience.
It is less suitable for players seeking continuous real-time combat, a persistent squad-building campaign, or a competitive game built around fast matchmaking. Crafting, vehicles, and buildings add variety, but they also make each match busier than a stripped-back classic ruleset. The best audience is comfortable learning weapon behavior and accepting that spectacular mistakes are part of the appeal.
