Game Description
Shadows: Awakening on PC is an isometric dark-fantasy action RPG from Games Farm and Kalypso Media. Steam and GOG currently list it under the same name, with no active storefront rebrand or renamed definitive edition. It is a separate adventure in the Heretic Kingdoms saga, built around a demon, possessed heroes, real-time combat, and instant movement between two connected realms.
The game is designed for single-player play rather than co-op or an online service model. Its strongest ideas are structural: one controllable Devourer carries several souls, each soul becomes a specialized Puppet, and exploration often depends on knowing which form can interact with a particular threat or puzzle.
A party system built inside one demon
You play as the Devourer, a demon summoned from the Shadow Realm. Instead of controlling a conventional party of separate adventurers, you consume the souls of fallen heroes and materialize them as Puppets in the Mortal Realm.
A group can contain the Devourer and up to three Puppets. The campaign offers 14 capturable souls, while the opening selection presents three heroes with their own storylines, quests, and dialogue. Each character has a distinct skill set, equipment restrictions, attributes, and role in combat.
This arrangement gives Shadows: Awakening a party-based identity without turning it into a traditional pause-and-command RPG. You switch characters directly during play, using the right Puppet for a particular encounter, weapon type, ability, or environmental interaction.
Two realms, one continuous adventure
The defining exploration mechanic is the ability to switch between the Mortal Realm and the Shadow Realm. The Devourer operates in the Shadow Realm, where it can fight enemies and entities that do not exist in the physical world. Puppets fight in the Mortal Realm and expose different routes through the same broader adventure space.
Realm switching is more than a visual change. Some enemies appear only in one realm, while powerful opponents such as certain mages, elementals, and demons can exist across both. Changing form can therefore alter the tactical situation, reveal hidden threats, or provide a safer route through an area.
Realm-based puzzles also make the campaign less linear than a simple sequence of combat arenas. Runes, pathways, obstacles, and encounter conditions may require actions in both worlds. Players who enjoy the darker isometric combat and loot structure of grim action RPGs like Grim Dawn will find a more puzzle-focused alternative here, with character switching replacing Grim Dawn's deep class-combination system.
Real-time combat and character development
Combat uses a top-down, isometric perspective with real-time tactical battles. The emphasis is not only on attacking quickly. You need to combine the abilities of your active characters, manage positioning, and select the Puppet whose skills best answer the enemy group in front of you.
Every character has unique skills that can be unlocked or improved with Skill Points. Skills have three upgrade levels, and unspent points remain available until you decide where to invest them. Level progression also unlocks Talent slots, allowing passive abilities to shape how a Puppet or the Devourer performs.
Characters receive Attribute Points for Strength, Agility, Endurance, and Willpower. Equipment adds another layer of build planning, but items are not universally usable. Each character favors specific weapons, armor, and equipment types, so a valuable drop may be excellent for one Puppet and unusable by another.
The loot system uses several quality categories: Common, Enchanted, Magical, Artefact, and Legendary. Crafting and equipment management support the main adventure loop, but the game is better understood as a story-driven action RPG than as an endless endgame loot treadmill.
Story choices, dialogue, and multiple endings
The narrative follows the Devourer and the souls it has absorbed through the Heretic Kingdoms. The demon can retain the memories and personalities of the souls it consumes, creating internal tension between the entity in control and the characters carried within it.
Conversations include selectable responses and questions, and some choices do not offer a second opportunity. That makes dialogue more consequential than a purely cosmetic conversation system. The campaign also includes multiple endings determined by decisions made throughout the story.
All dialogue is fully voiced, including a performance by Tom Baker. The combination of voiced conversations, internal character friction, and branching outcomes gives the campaign a stronger narrative identity than many loot-focused action RPGs.
What is included on PC?
The base PC game is sold as a complete single-player adventure, while the current Steam listing also presents three paid add-ons: Legendary Armory Pack, The Chromaton Chronicles, and Necrophage's Curse. These are separate content purchases rather than a free-to-play storefront model or a season-based service.
Steam lists Steam Cloud, achievements, trading cards, Family Sharing, and Remote Play on TV. GOG offers controller support, achievements, cloud saves through its optional Galaxy client, and a DRM-free version that can be installed and played offline without requiring Galaxy.
Keyboard controls can be customized through the options menu, while controller support makes the game suitable for players who prefer direct character movement and ability shortcuts over mouse-led action RPG controls. No official mod ecosystem or dedicated multiplayer feature is listed as part of the PC release.
Steam lists interface and subtitle support for English, French, German, Russian, Spanish from Spain, and Simplified Chinese. Full audio is listed for English and German. GOG confirms English, German, Spanish, French, and Russian language support, with audio and text availability varying by language.
Who should play Shadows: Awakening?
Shadows: Awakening is a good fit for players who want an isometric action RPG with a defined campaign, character switching, dark fantasy storytelling, and exploration puzzles. It rewards experimentation with Puppets rather than locking the entire experience around one hero build.
It is less suitable for players seeking online co-op, competitive modes, seasonal progression, or an enormous procedural endgame. The game has replay value through alternative choices, character availability, and different endings, but its structure remains campaign-focused.
It also suits players who prefer a more deliberate action RPG rhythm. The combat is real time, but realm selection, Puppet synergy, equipment restrictions, and puzzle solutions are central to the experience.
Similar PC experiences
For a broader loot-driven dark-fantasy game with dual-class builds, factions, and extensive character customization, isometric hack-and-slash RPG gameplay in Grim Dawn is the closest structural comparison, although it offers a much larger build sandbox and multiplayer support.
Players who want fast isometric combat but prefer repeated runs and changing upgrades may also look toward roguelike action RPG runs such as Hades: Battle Out of Hell. Shadows: Awakening differs by using a persistent story campaign, a fixed world, recruitable souls, and dialogue-driven progression instead of randomized escape attempts.
Shadows: Awakening FAQ
Is Shadows: Awakening currently sold under a different name?
No current Steam or GOG storefront rebrand is indicated. The PC game is still listed as Shadows: Awakening. It is part of the Heretic Kingdoms saga and should not be confused with the earlier Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms entry.
Is Shadows: Awakening multiplayer or co-op?
No. The PC version is a single-player RPG. Its party system means one player controls the Devourer and up to three Puppets; it does not provide online co-op, split-screen, or competitive multiplayer.
How does the Puppet system work?
The Devourer consumes the souls of fallen heroes and can materialize them as Puppets. You can capture up to 14 souls, keep up to three Puppets in the active group, and switch between them during exploration and combat.
Can you switch between the Mortal Realm and Shadow Realm?
Yes. The Devourer enters the Shadow Realm, while Puppets operate in the Mortal Realm. Switching realms can change enemy availability, reveal routes, expose secrets, and solve puzzles that require actions in both worlds.
Does the game have difficulty options?
Yes. The available choices are Easy, Normal, Hard, and Extreme. The New Game screen also includes Old school mode, which removes destination markers from the map for players who want to navigate with less assistance.
What kind of replay value does it offer?
Replay value comes from the available souls, character-specific quests, dialogue decisions, alternate outcomes, and multiple endings. It is a campaign RPG with replayable choices, not an endlessly scaling seasonal or multiplayer loot game.
