Game Description
World War Z: Aftermath PC is a co-op zombie shooter built around four-player teamwork, huge undead swarms, and replayable missions across several global locations. Steam currently presents the app page under the shorter name World War Z, while the Aftermath edition remains the publisher’s current branding and includes the original Game of the Year content alongside its newer campaigns and systems.
How the Co-op Loop Works
Each mission sends a squad through a linear survival scenario where the immediate goals are movement, scavenging, defense, and extraction. The campaign is designed for up to four players, but solo players can fill the remaining positions with AI teammates.
The defining threat is the game’s enormous zombie swarm. Saber Interactive’s Swarm Engine lets zombies climb over one another, pile into narrow routes, and behave like a moving battlefield problem rather than a series of isolated targets.
Combat alternates between ordinary traversal and set-piece defenses. A team may need to secure an objective, prepare defensive equipment, hold a gate, or survive a concentrated attack before the next section opens.
Positioning matters as much as aim. Choke points, elevated firing positions, deployable defenses, ammunition placement, and friendly-fire awareness all shape whether a squad controls the horde or gets surrounded.
Classes, Weapons, and Close-Quarters Combat
Aftermath includes eight campaign classes: Gunslinger, Hellraiser, Slasher, Medic, Fixer, Exterminator, Dronemaster, and Vanguard. Each class uses its own perk layout and supports a different contribution to the team.
The class system gives repeated missions a clear purpose. Players unlock perks, improve class progression, and refine a role instead of simply collecting stronger equipment with no build direction.
Weapon customization is another long-term layer. Firearms can be upgraded through progression, while different weapon options encourage distinct approaches to crowd control, precision shooting, support, or close-range defense.
Aftermath also adds a heavier melee focus with weapons such as the sickle, cleaver, fire axe, and sledgehammer. Its first-person mode is optional, so players can switch between the established third-person perspective and a more immediate view during combat.
The Vanguard class stands apart through its electrified shield, which supports aggressive pushes into dense groups. It is not simply another damage class; the shield changes how a player creates space and protects a team during a collapse.
Campaigns, Horde Modes, and PvP
The complete Aftermath package includes the original Game of the Year campaign content from New York, Moscow, Marseille, Jerusalem, and Tokyo. It adds story episodes set around Rome, including Vatican City, and the Kamchatka region of Russia.
These episodes are better understood as replayable co-op missions than as a character-driven single-player drama. The narrative provides context for each location, but the main attraction is learning routes, mastering objectives, and surviving escalating encounters with a coordinated squad.
Horde Mode focuses on sustained defense rather than travel through a campaign map. Players earn resources, place defenses, manage ammunition, and decide how long they can hold each position as the pressure increases.
On PC, Aftermath also includes Horde Mode XL, a larger-scale variant designed around substantially bigger zombie formations. The mode is especially useful for players who want the swarm technology to be the main event rather than a threat encountered between objectives.
The separate PvPvZ component mixes player-versus-player combat with zombie interference. It offers a different rhythm from the co-op campaign, with human opponents creating pressure while the undead remain an unpredictable third force.
Content Model and Current Editions
Aftermath is a paid package rather than a free-to-play game. The main edition combines the original campaign collection with the Aftermath episodes, melee additions, first-person option, Vanguard class, and other progression features.
The current storefront structure can be confusing. Steam’s app page is headed World War Z, but it separately lists World War Z: Aftermath, an Aftermath Upgrade, and a Deluxe Edition. Epic Games currently labels the base product World War Z: Aftermath and also lists the Aftermath Upgrade as an add-on.
The wider add-on catalog contains additional campaign episodes, weapon packs, character cosmetics, weapon skins, and crossover content. The storefront currently exposes 22 pieces of downloadable content, so buyers should distinguish the complete Aftermath package from later optional purchases.
Players who already own the original World War Z or its Game of the Year edition should check for the upgrade path instead of automatically buying the full package. The upgrade is intended to add Aftermath content to an existing eligible copy.
PC Features and Online Play
PC players can access Aftermath through Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store versions. Steam lists full controller support, Steam Cloud, achievements, online co-op, online PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer.
The game supports cross-play between PC and consoles, allowing Steam and Epic players to join friends on supported PlayStation and Xbox platforms. It does not provide local co-op, so couch multiplayer is not an option on PC.
Solo missions and solo modes can be played with AI companions, but the game’s strongest systems are built around online coordination. There is no cross-progression between platforms, although Saber’s support documentation describes a one-time save transfer through the PROS system.
Audio is available in English. Interface text and subtitles are also supported in Russian, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, French, Italian, German, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese.
Steam requires agreement to the World War Z: Aftermath third-party EULA. The practical PC ecosystem is therefore tied to the selected storefront account, online services, and platform-specific ownership rather than a standalone offline installation model.
Who Should Play It?
Aftermath suits players who enjoy team-based PvE shooters, escalating defense sequences, class specialization, and repeatable missions where coordination matters more than cinematic storytelling.
It is also a strong fit for players who want zombie combat at a larger scale than conventional corridor shooters. The swarm can turn a routine objective into a positional emergency within seconds.
Players who prefer a slower survival sandbox, deep exploration, or a branching role-playing campaign may find the structure restrictive. The missions are focused, combat-heavy, and built around replaying familiar objectives with different classes and difficulties.
For a more traditional four-survivor co-op structure, classic campaign-driven zombie shooters such as Left 4 Dead 2 provide a useful comparison, but Aftermath places greater emphasis on class progression and spectacle-sized hordes.
Similar PC Games
Aftermath shares its cooperative route-clearing DNA with card-driven zombie campaigns like Back 4 Blood, although Aftermath replaces deck construction with class perks, weapon upgrades, and a more direct progression loop.
Its wave defense side is closer to class-based horde FPS games such as Killing Floor 2. The distinction is that World War Z combines defense arenas with globe-spanning campaign episodes and a much more mobile swarm threat.
Choose Aftermath when the appeal is the sight and pressure of hundreds of zombies converging on a team. Choose its competitors when you want deeper campaign mutation, more traditional wave structure, or a stronger emphasis on build experimentation.
World War Z: Aftermath FAQ
