Game Description

Back 4 Blood PC is a cooperative first-person zombie shooter built around four-player campaigns, hostile Ridden hordes, and a flexible card system. The current Steam and Epic listings still use the name Back 4 Blood; there is no verified rebrand or replacement edition. Turtle Rock Studios has ended new content development, but the existing game and its three story expansions remain the complete playable package.

Campaign combat built for coordinated squads

The main loop sends a team of Cleaners through connected missions, scavenging ammunition, copper, weapons, healing items, and defensive tools before reaching the next safe room. The first-person perspective keeps combat immediate, but survival depends on more than aiming. Teams must watch each other’s health, protect incapacitated players, manage trauma, and decide when to push forward or search an area for supplies.

Common Ridden create constant pressure while Special Ridden force players to react to distinct threats. Tall Boys can break a formation, Stingers attack from range, Hockers pin isolated players, and Reekers punish teams that cluster together. Mutated enemies and environmental hazards make positioning important, especially on higher difficulties where a single mistake can end a run.

Back 4 Blood is structured around acts rather than an open world. Missions include linear movement, timed defenses, objective sequences, ambushes, and set-piece encounters. The Game Director changes the pressure with Ridden Corruption Cards, which can alter enemy behavior, visibility, hazards, or the overall conditions of a run.

Cards, Cleaners, and build experimentation

The defining system is the roguelite card system. Players assemble personal decks from cards that affect damage, stamina, healing, ammunition, mobility, melee combat, weak-spot damage, team utility, and other parts of a build. The campaign then draws cards during missions, turning deck order and card selection into part of the tactical decision-making.

Each Cleaner contributes a different team identity, and the strongest builds usually support a clear role rather than stacking identical bonuses. A melee-focused Holly, a medical Doc, a precision-oriented Jim, or a support-minded Hoffman can change how a squad approaches the same mission. The important choice is not simply which character looks appealing, but how that Cleaner fits the group’s weapons and deck plan.

Burn Cards and supply-line progression add a longer-term mastery loop outside individual missions. Players earn progression through campaign play, unlock additional cards and cosmetics, and refine decks for Recruit, Veteran, Nightmare, and higher challenge levels. Training mode is particularly useful for testing builds because it exposes the card pool and lets players learn mission layouts without the normal campaign pressure.

Modes and solo play

Online Campaign supports up to four players, with each person choosing a Cleaner and contributing to the squad’s deck strategy. Quickplay is suited to joining active missions, while private sessions work better for groups that want to coordinate builds, difficulty, and mission order.

The competitive option is Swarm PvP, an eight-player mode that places Cleaner teams against player-controlled Ridden. It is not a traditional deathmatch. Players switch between survivor and Ridden roles, purchase mutations, and try to outlast the opposing team while the playable area contracts around the Cleaners.

Solo players can use the offline Campaign with three AI teammates, and progression from offline Campaign can carry into online Campaign. Training mode also supports solo play and is designed for experimenting with cards, learning maps, and understanding the corruption effects that shape each mission.

Expansions and current content model

Back 4 Blood is a paid game rather than a free-to-play release. The base package contains the main campaign, Cleaner roster, card progression, offline modes, online co-op, and Swarm PvP. The storefront also lists Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate editions, with higher editions bundling the Annual Pass and additional cosmetic items.

The completed add-on lineup contains three story expansions: Tunnels of Terror, Children of the Worm, and River of Blood. They add new campaign material, Cleaners, Ridden or hostile factions, cards, weapons, accessories, and cosmetics. Tunnels of Terror also introduces Ridden Hives, while Children of the Worm adds Act 5 and Prophet Dan; River of Blood expands the campaign with another act and playable content.

Players should distinguish ownership of an expansion from access to a multiplayer session. Content access can depend on the host or party setup, so a group should confirm which campaign acts and side activities are available before buying separate add-ons. Turtle Rock’s post-launch content phase is complete, meaning buyers should treat the current package as a finished catalog rather than an actively expanding service game.

PC features and platform details

The PC version is distributed through Steam and Epic Games Store. Steam lists full controller support, online co-op, online PvP, single-player functionality, HDR support, Family Sharing, and Steam Deck compatibility. Keyboard and mouse remain natural choices for players who want direct first-person aiming, while controller users can access dedicated gamepad settings and aim-assist controls.

Back 4 Blood uses Easy Anti-Cheat for online play and requires agreement to a third-party EULA. Steam identifies the implementation as kernel-level anti-cheat, which is an important consideration for players who prefer games with minimal background services. The PC ecosystem is therefore tied to the selected storefront account and the game’s online services when using Campaign matchmaking or Swarm.

Display options include field-of-view controls for both Cleaner and Ridden perspectives. Official updates also added better support for ultrawide and multimonitor configurations, although players using unusual aspect ratios should still review the in-game FOV settings rather than relying on default values.

Steam lists 15 supported languages. English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese include full audio, while Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Turkish are supported through interface and subtitle localization.

Who should play Back 4 Blood?

Back 4 Blood suits players who want a demanding co-op shooter with repeatable missions, defined team roles, build planning, and escalating difficulty. It is especially strong for groups that enjoy discussing decks, assigning responsibilities, sharing resources, and learning how enemy mutations interact with the map.

It is less suitable for players looking for couch co-op on one PC, a purely solo story campaign without AI companions, or a competitive mode built around large-scale tactical variety. Its best moments come from online teamwork and repeated attempts to improve a squad’s decision-making.

For another PC co-op zombie shooter focused on four-player missions and large undead waves, global horde campaigns like World War Z: Aftermath provide a useful comparison. Back 4 Blood is more deck-driven and mutation-focused, while World War Z: Aftermath emphasizes swarm scale, class progression, and location-based episodes.

Similar PC co-op shooters

Players who prefer fixed arenas, perk roles, and wave survival may find a closer match in class-based zombie horde shooters such as Killing Floor 2. That game centers on Trader purchases, perk specialization, and boss waves, whereas Back 4 Blood moves squads through campaign missions and uses cards to shape each run.

For teams that want exploration and objective play alongside hostile swarms, destructible-cave co-op FPS missions like Deep Rock Galactic are another relevant comparison. Deep Rock Galactic gives more control over terrain and mission objectives; Back 4 Blood is more linear, pressure-driven, and centered on defending a four-person formation.
