Exploration is the heart of the game. Connected regions, new abilities unlock old paths. Quest givers give silly tasks. You collect outfits: a flying squirrel suit lets you glide, another lets you talk to pigs. Strange, but useful. I died. A lot. Especially in the jumping sections.
