The game aims for simulation, yet it gives you plenty of options to shape handling and assistance so you can drive comfortably and still feel the speed.

What you do in F1 2021

You race. A lot. You chase clean laps, manage pressure, and try not to throw away a good run in the final sector (it happens). With the official license, you line up on the 2021 grid with the authentic roster of twenty drivers and ten teams, and you take on races across well-known circuits. If you want a stepping stone before the big show, Formula 2 is included as a training ground, with short, medium, or full season options.

After a race, you can review what happened. The game can show automated highlights, and on PC you can also watch full replays. It’s surprisingly useful when you’re trying to figure out whether that overtake was genius or just luck.

Modes: story, careers, and building your own team

The headline addition in F1 2021 is Braking Point, a story mode. You play through a two-season journey with events happening both on and off the track, then you jump in to drive the key races yourself. It’s a different vibe than pure championship grinding, and it gives you a reason to care about the next weekend beyond points.

Career is still a big pillar. The research and development flow is refreshed, and practice programmes return with the option of Quick Practice, so you can keep momentum when you don’t want to run every session in full.

If you like having your own corner of the paddock, My Team is here too. You create a driver, pick a sponsor, choose an engine supplier, hire a teammate, and run as the 11th team on the grid as a driver-manager. It’s part racing, part long-term planning, and part “why did I sign that contract again?”

There’s also Real-Season Start, which tracks real-world rankings and lets you begin a season from the current point. If you want your campaign to feel tied to what’s happening in the actual standings, this is the mode that tries to do it.

Two-player Career and split-screen

Not everything has to be solo. F1 2021 adds a two-player Career where you and another player can cooperate or compete. And if you prefer the classic couch rivalry, there’s split-screen for two players. Same room, same track, same “I swear you turned into me” arguments.

Multiplayer and esports space

Online play is expanded, with both Social and Ranked racing, Quick Join, Leagues, and Weekly Events. You can also customize liveries for your online presence. For competitive-focused players, the game includes an in-game esports area with online qualification events, news, and the ability to watch F1 Esports Challenger and Pro Series races.

Driving feel and options

The handling can be tuned to match your experience level. There are casual options if you want a more relaxed race, and expert options if you want more control. The point is simple: you decide how demanding the car should be, then you learn at your own pace.

PC features and technical notes

On PC, F1 2021 offers customizable graphics settings and support for a wide range of controllers, wheels, pedals, and custom hardware. There’s eye-tracking support, and you can export highlight reels to video files, save full replays, and share them. PC also supports custom race setups via a Steam Workshop feature, letting you find and download community-made setups for different Grands Prix.

Raytraced shadows and reflections are available on PC (with the required raytracing-capable hardware). The game also notes that to access all 2021 season tracks, final versions of the 2021 cars, and the updated F2 class, you need to download a dedicated patch.

If you want official 2021 Formula 1 racing with a mix of structured modes and flexible driving options, F1 2021 gives you a lot to dig into: story-driven Braking Point, long-form careers (including two-player Career), My Team management, and multiplayer with both online and split-screen racing.
