Terra Invicta is a deep strategy game about one big problem: aliens are coming, and humanity still can’t agree on anything. You don’t play as “Earth” or a single country. You lead a faction that tries to shape the planet’s response - and, eventually, the war beyond it. If you like maps, politics, long-term planning, and the moment where one small decision snowballs into a global mess, this is that kind of game.

What you do in Terra Invicta

You’re the commander of a chosen faction, and your core job is influence. You push nations, institutions, and leaders toward your agenda - sometimes through diplomacy, sometimes through pressure, and sometimes through force. There are seven playable factions, each with its own win conditions. That means the same crisis can lead to totally different plans: one group wants to wipe out the aliens and their sympathizers, another aims for cooperation, while another focuses on escaping the Solar System. So yeah, you’re not just asking “can we win?” You’re also asking “what does winning even mean?”

Nations are not your pieces - they have their own weight

The world isn’t simply divided into seven colored blobs. Nations exist with their own militaries and organizations, and you try to pull those levers. You might lean on intelligence agencies to detect and eliminate alien threats, or steer national forces into open conflict. Meanwhile the aliens are active too, showing up through bases and through mysterious or destructive random events. It’s the kind of setup where you can feel clever one minute and slightly panicked the next (in a good way).

Real-time flow with active pause

Terra Invicta runs in real time, but you can pause actively whenever you want to issue orders without rushing. That changes the vibe. You’re not purely in turn-based “I’ll think for ten minutes” mode, but you’re also not forced into frantic clicking. You can take a breath, line up decisions, then let the clock run again.

Economy, politics, and research choices that bite back

This is a grand strategy game, so you’re expected to engage with a complex political and economic layer. One of the more unusual parts is research. Instead of each faction having its own separate tech tree, there’s shared global scientific progress for Earth. That shared progress unlocks private projects for each faction.

Here’s the catch: you can choose to focus on your private projects because they’re essential to your faction’s goals, but that comes with risk. Neglecting broader science can weaken the planet overall and can also leave the direction of research in your rivals’ hands. Sometimes cooperation is rational. Sometimes rivalry is unavoidable. And sometimes you’ll cooperate right up until the second it stops being convenient. It happens.

  • You shape nations instead of directly owning the whole map.
  • You balance shared research with faction-specific projects.
  • You react to alien bases and volatile random events.
  • You can pause at any time to plan cleanly.

From Earth to a moving Solar System

As time goes on, the conflict expands into space. The Solar System is represented with 300+ planets, moons, and asteroids, all in constant motion. The map changes as bodies move, so space isn’t a static board. Planning routes and timing matters because the environment itself keeps shifting while you play.

Ship design and 3D real-time battles

When it comes to combat in space, Terra Invicta leans into realism. You design ships using different hull types and you choose the weapons, drives, and radiators. Battles happen in real time in 3D space. Momentum and maneuvering matter as much as raw firepower, and heat management is not just a detail. If you rely on radiators to dump heat, you might be exposing vulnerable points that can be damaged. So even with a tech or economic edge, you’re not guaranteed to steamroll. You still have to fly smart.

Scenarios and how they shift the start

Beyond the main campaign, two additional scenarios were added thanks to the Kickstarter campaign. One moves the timeline to the Cold War, where global cooperation is harder because humanity is already near nuclear catastrophe. The other jumps into a future where colonization of the Solar System has been underway for a long time, letting you get into space conflict earlier since you start with stations already built. If you’re the type who likes the same systems but wants a different opening problem, these scenarios are the point.

Presentation and mod support

Visually, Terra Invicta uses 3D graphics in line with what you’d expect from modern strategy games. The music is composed by the Hamburg-based band Breakdown Epiphanies, known for their work on Battle Brothers. Kickstarter support also brought in professional voice actors in multiple languages.

Modding is part of the design from the start. Terra Invicta aims to let you create mods easily without needing programming knowledge, which is great if you enjoy tweaking rules, adding content, or just grabbing community-made changes to fit your taste.

Is Terra Invicta for you?

If you want a strategy game where politics, economics, and long-term research decisions matter, and where the war escalates from Earth to realistic space combat, Terra Invicta gives you a lot to chew on. You’ll spend time thinking, pausing, adjusting plans, and watching factions collide over the same existential threat. And honestly? That tension - between “save Earth” and “what does my faction really want?” - is the hook that makes Terra Invicta feel distinct.
