RuneQuest Warlords is a battle-scale, turn-based strategy game set in the RuneQuest universe. You step into Glorantha and take command on an isometric battlefield where every tile matters. It is the kind of game where you stare at a grid, count action points, and then realize you are one square short. Been there.
RuneQuest Warlords in Glorantha: what you’re doing
The story takes you to the lands of Talastar and Dorastor on the Genertela continent, during the invasion of Chaos. You play as Hahlgrim, a tribal champion from Talastar’s Bilings, trying to push back the Chaos hordes and keep your people alive. Along the way you meet well-known names from the RuneQuest setting, including Ketil White Eye, Hakon the Swimmer, Ralzakark, and Wovandor. The tone is not just heroic deeds - it also makes room for cruelty and betrayal. So yeah, don’t expect a comfy march from mission to mission.
Turn-based battles on a square grid
The core of the gameplay is tactical combat fought on arenas covered in a square grid. You deploy your units and then take turns, spending Action Points (AP) on movement, attacks, and special abilities. Terrain and positioning matter, so the map is not just a background - it’s part of the puzzle. You also have to respect each unit’s Zone of Control, which influences nearby tiles and can limit how enemies move around you. It’s a small rule that creates big consequences.
You can also switch a unit into Sentry Mode, letting it guard a chosen area. Add in reactions like Opportunity Attacks and counter-attacks, and suddenly you’re thinking not only about your turn, but about what the other side can punish immediately. Do you step forward for damage, or hold position so you don’t get clipped on the reply?
Advanced tactics: flanking and spellcasting
If you like squeezing extra value out of a turn, the game supports “advanced tactics” such as flanking and using spells. Heroes can gain a bonus to their available AP through these tactics, which encourages you to plan a turn as a sequence rather than a single action. Sometimes the best move is not the loudest one - it’s the setup.
Three factions and a mixed army roster
In RuneQuest Warlords you lead one of three factions: Talastar, Chaos, or the Lunar Empire. Your faction choice shapes your unit roster and how you approach fights. Units include heroes, infantry, cavalry, monsters, and artillery. Many units come in variants, and units can consist of multiple models (from 1 to 7). Each model has its own health points, so a unit can feel like a small squad rather than a single hitbox.
Some units are defined by speed and pressure, others by resilience or heavy support. You also get specialized heroes with unique abilities and distinctive roles. The result is a roster that pushes you to think in combined arms terms: who locks down space, who breaks a line, and who cleans up after the first strike. If you enjoy Norse mythology in your games, check out Rune: Ragnarok for a similar vibe with gods and battles.
- Heroes give you signature abilities and growth through the campaign.
- Heavies and skirmishers let you decide between holding ground and playing for angles.
- Monsters and artillery change how you value terrain and safe positioning.
Runes and magic as real tools, not decoration
Magic is a major layer of decision-making. You use powers connected to ancient Runes and the Glorantha pantheon. As you progress, your heroes develop new magical abilities and improve existing ones by strengthening their affinity with specific runes. Abilities can be instant or sustained, which means you’re not only choosing what to cast, but also what you can keep running without losing control of your resources.
There is also Cult Rune Magic, which is exclusive to hero units and can deliver both quick advantages and longer tactical support. In practice, it’s the difference between “I win this exchange” and “I control the next three turns.”
Modes: campaign, skirmish, Arena, and online multiplayer
If you want structured progression, you have a narrative campaign of 18 missions that follows Hahlgrim’s journey and the struggle against Chaos. If you prefer quick battles, there are single skirmishes and scenarios. The Competitive Arena focuses on replayable scenarios, the kind you run again because you know you could have played that opening better.
And if you’re the type who learns fastest when someone else punishes your mistakes, you can also play multiplayer over the Internet. Different factions and unit matchups encourage you to refine tactics and adapt, not just repeat one plan.
Whether you’re here for the RuneQuest setting or for the grid-based tactical fights, RuneQuest Warlords is built around clear rules, meaningful positioning, and magic that can flip a battle when you use it at the right moment.
