Tomba! Special Edition brings back a classic metroidvania-style action platformer, rebuilt as a remaster and tuned for modern play. You step into the shoes of Tomba, a boy with a big jump and an even bigger reason to chase trouble. A gang known as the Seven Evil Pigs (and their underlings, the Koma Pigs) has thrown a colorful archipelago into chaos. And for you, it gets personal fast: your treasured bracelet, a keepsake from your late grandfather, gets stolen. So you run after the thieves. Simple start, long ride.
What you actually do in Tomba! Special Edition
You spend most of your time in side view, moving through bright, cartoon-styled locations. It feels like a straightforward platformer at first: you jump gaps, climb around, and try not to get embarrassed by traps. But it keeps opening up. Sometimes the game shifts perspective, showing certain moments in an isometric view. In specific areas, you can also hop between the foreground and background, which changes how you approach obstacles and routes.
Combat is scrappy and a little weird in a good way. You can use different tools like flails and boomerangs. And yes, you can also fight with your teeth. It’s the kind of detail that makes you grin the first time you do it, then makes you rely on it when things get hectic. When you take damage, you recover health by eating fruit. Nothing fancy. Just practical survival snacks.
Quests, people, and the archipelago’s busywork (the good kind)
This archipelago isn’t empty. The locals are generally friendly, and you can talk to characters you meet while exploring. Many of them hand out tasks. These quests can involve looking for items, helping someone out, or breaking down obstacles that block progress. Completing missions earns you special points, and those points can open access to additional requests. It’s a steady loop: explore, notice a problem, fix it, get rewarded, then find the next thing that nudges you deeper into the world.
Remaster upgrades in Tomba! Special Edition
This Special Edition is positioned as the most complete version, with quality-of-life changes that smooth out older design edges. If you’ve ever lost progress in an old platformer and just stared at the screen for a second, you’ll appreciate what’s included here.
- Save Anywhere - you can save without trekking back to a checkpoint.
- Rewind - stuck on a tricky section? Roll back and try again.
- Analog control toggle - choose how you want movement to feel.
- Museum content - print ads, packaging, manuals, dev documents, and high-res original artwork.
- Remastered soundtrack - a new version of the music by original composer Harumi Fujita.
- Interview - a feature with creator Tokuro Fujiwara.
How it feels moment to moment
The appeal is the mix of linear and non-linear structure. You can follow the obvious path when you want a clean run forward, but you also get reasons to poke around. A character hints at a need. A blocked route nags at you. A quest point reward suggests there’s more to do than just reach the next screen. It’s the kind of game where you’ll sometimes turn around because you suddenly remember a place that felt “not yet.”
Visually, it leans into a colorful, cartoon look, and the remaster is built using the Carbon Engine, a technology made for producing remasters. The sound side is led by the remastered soundtrack, so even if you’re returning to a familiar world, it aims to feel refreshed in your headphones.
Singleplayer or with a friend?
Tomba! Special Edition is listed with singleplayer and multiplayer options, including play for two people and split/shared screen. If you’re the kind of player who likes calling out jumps, trading attempts on hard sections, or just having someone else nearby when chaos hits, that’s worth noting. If you prefer to explore at your own pace, you can keep it solo and treat the quests like a personal checklist of island problems to fix.
Should you play Tomba! Special Edition?
If you want a 2.5D, side-scrolling metroidvania-flavored platformer where exploration, quests, and oddball combat sit in the same package, this is your lane. You chase stolen jewelry, mess with evil pigs, and wander a bright archipelago full of tasks and detours. And thanks to Save Anywhere and Rewind, you can push through tough moments without turning the game into a patience test. That’s a pretty good reason to give Tomba! Special Edition a shot.
