Sonic Frontiers takes the usual Sonic idea - speed, rings, enemies, and split-second jumps - and drops it into open locations instead of strictly linear stages. You play from a third-person view and spend your time moving across the Starfall Islands, a remote archipelago filled with huge ancient structures and plenty of space to run.
What you do in Sonic Frontiers
You arrive on the Starfall Islands as Sonic after a strange chain of events pulls your group into an interdimensional portal. You get separated from Tails and Amy, and you end up dealing with Cyber Space before reaching one of the islands. From there, the goal is simple to say and harder to do: you race against time and try to rescue your friends.
The islands are not just scenery. They are built around exploration. You sprint across wide terrain, jump between platforms, ride rails, and climb giant objects. Sometimes it feels like classic Sonic momentum in a bigger playground. Other times you stop for a second, look at a landmark, and think, “Okay, how do I reach that?”
Story setup: Starfall Islands, Eggman, and Sage
The plot centers on Starfall Islands, described as the cradle of an ancient civilization. Dr. Eggman makes a discovery there and installs an AI program meant to hack his system into a mysterious artifact. It backfires. A protective protocol activates and consumes him.
You and your friends head to the islands to investigate the missing Chaos Emeralds, but your plane, the Tornado, hits trouble and the portal incident happens. During your mission you meet Sage, a mysterious figure who keeps trying to convince you to leave the island. Naturally, you do not just leave.
Exploration, collectibles, and progression
While you explore, you collect items scattered across platforms and routes, including the familiar rings. You also find useful collectibles like Memory Tokens, which you can use to help free your friends. The islands hide additional discoverables, so poking around off the obvious path can pay off.
Progress is not only about finding the next objective. You earn experience points from fights and use them to unlock new moves. Over time you can also improve key stats:
- Speed
- Attack
- Defense
- Ring capacity (your buffer against taking too much damage)
If you like feeling your character get sharper over a run, this matters. You are not only learning the terrain - you are upgrading how Sonic handles combat and survival.
Combat: combos, bosses, and Cyloop
Fighting is a major part of Sonic Frontiers. Encounters are designed to be more involved than just bumping an enemy at full speed. You face different opponents and, at times, bigger and stronger bosses that can push you to think a little before you mash forward.
Sonic has a broader combat toolkit and can chain flashy combos. One highlighted new move is the Cyloop: you draw a cybernetic loop around enemies. When you perform it correctly, it launches foes into the air and makes them more vulnerable to follow-up hits. It is the kind of move you can use as a plan, not just a reaction.
Challenges beyond fighting
Not every marker on the map is about combat. You also run into platforming challenges and puzzles, signposted with a red question mark. There are time trials as well, where the goal is to reach a point before the clock runs out. It is a nice change of pace when you want a focused test instead of open roaming.
Audio-visual notes
The game uses a 3D visual style. Music is credited to Jun Senoue and Tomoya Ohtani. The main theme is I’m Here performed by Merry Kirk-Holmes (To Octavia), and the end credits song is Vandalize by ONE OK ROCK.
Is Sonic Frontiers for you?
If you want Sonic speed and platforming, but you are curious how it feels when you are not locked into a straight line, Sonic Frontiers is built around that idea. You explore five islands, fight, collect tokens and rings, unlock moves, and chase the story thread of saving your friends on the Starfall Islands. And yes, you will probably see something in the distance and think, “I can get there.”
