Code Vein 2 is a singleplayer action RPG with a soulslike backbone, shown from a third-person view. You explore hostile locations, get into fast fights, and learn enemies the hard way. If you liked the idea of a bleak future where people and vampire-like beings share the same ruined space, you are back in that universe - with a bigger twist: time travel. Check out the Code Vein Deluxe Edition for the original game.

What you do in Code Vein 2

You play as a Revenant Hunter (also described as a Hunter of Wraiths), moving through a science-fiction, post-apocalyptic world. Your loop is clear: you push forward through areas, deal with regular foes, and eventually face bosses that demand attention. You stay mobile, watch for openings, and choose the right moment to commit. Overextending feels bad. Hanging back too much also feels bad. That tension is kind of the point.

Exploration matters because fights are not isolated arenas. You are navigating spaces that want to trip you up, funnel you into ambushes, or drain your resources before a bigger encounter. When you finally reach a boss, you want to feel prepared - or at least prepared enough to learn.

Combat: movement, timing, and blood-powered abilities

Combat in Code Vein 2 is built around constant motion and smart use of attacks and skills. You look for gaps in an opponent’s defense, then punish them. The game also lets you drain enemies’ blood to access special abilities that boost your combat potential. So you are not only managing positioning and timing, but also deciding when to go in for that drain and what you want to unlock or empower with it.

It is a very practical kind of problem-solving. You ask yourself: can you safely pressure this enemy, or do you need to bait an attack first? Can you afford to spend your best ability now, or do you need it for what might be around the next corner?

Progression and equipment

As you progress, you develop your character and pick up better equipment. The idea is to shape your build to your preferences. If a fight is giving you trouble, sometimes the answer is not just “play better” (though, sure, that helps) - it can also be “adjust your setup” and come back with a plan that fits your style.

  • Grow your character over time.
  • Improve your loadout with stronger gear.
  • Adapt your approach to different enemy types and bosses.

Partners: unique skills and shared stories

A big part of the moment-to-moment feel comes from your companions. Partners bring unique abilities and real combat value, so you are rarely fighting alone in spirit, even when the game is singleplayer. Beyond mechanics, each partner has their own story, and you can build bonds with them. It is not just a “bring the best buff” situation - it is also about who you want alongside you as the journey gets stranger and more personal.

And yeah, having someone cover your mistakes can feel like a relief. Until a boss reminds you that you still have to do your part.

Story and setting: Revenants, Horrors, and the Luna Rapacis threat

The world of Code Vein 2 is a future where humans live next to vampiric beings known as Revenants. A danger called Luna Rapacis pushes Revenants into madness, transforming them into terrifying monsters called Horrors. That premise gives every fight extra bite: you are not just clearing obstacles, you are facing the fallout of a world breaking down - again and again.

Your personal mission leans into time travel. You team up with a girl named Lou, who can travel into the past, and you cross time and space to change the fate of key Revenants. The goal is simple to say and hard to pull off: prevent the transformation into Horrors and stop the total collapse of your world. You are basically trying to fix a disaster by rewriting the moments that caused it. No pressure.

Release info and naming note

The game is listed as Code Vein 2 and also appears as Code Vein II. It is a sequel to the 2019 action RPG soulslike Code Vein, and it is developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The release date provided is January 30, 2026.

Should you play Code Vein 2?

If you want a third-person soulslike action RPG where you stay on the move, learn enemy patterns, and leverage blood-drain abilities for special powers, Code Vein 2 fits that lane. Add partners with unique skills and bond-driven stories, plus a time-travel narrative built around saving Revenants from becoming Horrors, and you have a clear reason to jump in. If that mix sounds like your kind of challenge, Code Vein 2 is worth keeping on your radar.
