DOOM: The Dark Ages is the sixth main entry in the long-running FPS series that started back in 1993. It is also a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal (2020). If the title makes you expect knights and castles only, here is the clearer picture: you are still the Doom Slayer, still facing hell, but the world is shaped like a dark, quasi-medieval age where gods and kings use you as a living super-weapon.
What you do in DOOM: The Dark Ages
You play in first-person. You move through gloomy locations and push forward through missions that are less linear than before. Maps are bigger, a bit more open, and they like to hide secrets. You visit different planets with human fortresses and battlefields, you descend into Hell, and at one point you even end up in a separate dimension inspired by so-called Cthulhu mythology. It is a tour of grim places, but you are not here for sightseeing.
Combat rhythm: still aggressive, but heavier
The core idea stays familiar: you keep moving, you avoid incoming attacks, you weaken demons with guns, and you finish them up close with brutal finishers. The big twist is the pace. Compared to DOOM Eternal, this game is slower and makes the Slayer feel heavier and less mobile. That changes your mindset. Instead of always darting around, you often need to stay brave in the pocket and pay attention to parrying with your shield.
Weapons and the new shield-saw
You get a rich arsenal. Classic tools of destruction return, like the super shotgun, plasma gun, and rocket launcher. But the headline addition is a hybrid of a shield and a saw - a shield-saw. You can use it to defend yourself, to time parries, and to throw it into enemies. It is one of those weapons that changes how you read a fight: sometimes you shoot first, sometimes you block first, and sometimes you do both in the same breath.
There are also new ranged weapon variants mentioned, like a stake launcher and a gun that fires skull fragments, plus three types of melee weapons (for example, a battle flail). In practice, it means you are encouraged to switch styles often. One moment you are blasting, the next you are closing distance for a finish. Simple loop, messy results.
Enemies, old names in new shapes
Demons come in hordes. Some are familiar to series fans, but you also run into enemies that are new to this entry. Even the classics get redesigned to match the quasi-medieval vibe. Yes, you will see names like imp and cacodemon, but not quite in the same look you remember. It is the same problem as always: they want you dead, and you need to stay calm enough to pick targets while everything screams.
Mech Atlan and dragon sections
Between the regular on-foot levels, you sometimes get two special types of segments. First, you pilot a gigantic mech called an Atlan, sized like a skyscraper, throwing metal fists at titans. Second, you ride a dragon and fight in aerial battles. These parts act like breaks in the usual loop, but they still fit the theme: you are the weapon, just scaled up.
Story setup and where it fits
The story takes place hundreds of years before the recent games, in this strange medieval-flavored era. You serve gods and kings, and Hell launches an assault on the kingdom you are meant to protect. That is the frame. The rest is you doing what the Doom Slayer does - showing up, surviving the impossible, and leaving the place quieter than you found it.
Technical note and editions
DOOM: The Dark Ages runs on id Tech 8, the latest version of id Software's in-house tech. It also launched in multiple editions: Standard, Premium, and Collector's. The Premium Edition includes a story expansion (not available on release day), a digital artbook, soundtrack, and a Divinity Skin Pack, plus 2 days of early access. The Collector's Edition adds physical items like a Doom Slayer figure, a metal red key card replica, and a steelbook. There is also a Limited Edition Collection tied to Xbox hardware accessories.
Should you play DOOM: The Dark Ages?
If you want a singleplayer FPS where you stay aggressive but feel heavier, where shield parries matter, and where the series formula is pushed into dark medieval spaces - this is clearly aimed at you. If you liked the modern DOOM games but wished for bigger, less linear maps and new toys like the shield-saw, you will have plenty to dig into. Either way, you will know fast: DOOM: The Dark Ages does not take long to throw you into the fire.
