Sniper Elite: Resistance is a third-person action shooter and a spin-off in Rebellion’s sniper-focused series. You’re dropped into World War II France, working away from the front lines where small actions can shift the bigger picture. The story runs in parallel to the events of Sniper Elite: Berlin 1945, but you don’t need a lecture to get going - you have a job, a target list, and a lot of enemies who really don’t want you there.
What you do in Sniper Elite: Resistance
You play as Harry Hawker, a special forces agent tasked with stopping a German Wunderwaffe - a new weapon that could change the war. That setup matters because it frames the campaign as a sequence of missions where you infiltrate, disrupt, and get out alive. You’re not meant to stand in a heroic line and trade bullets forever. You’re meant to slip in, break things, remove key people, and disappear.
Mission structure: get in, complete objectives, extract
The core loop is mission-based. You’re sent behind enemy lines to eliminate specific targets, destroy equipment, or carry out sabotage. Then you look for a safe way to evacuate. It sounds simple on paper, but the moment you’re spotted, the map can turn into a small war. And yes, sometimes you’ll think you’re being careful, then kick a door at the worst possible time. It happens.
Stealth or firefight - your choice, but the game nudges you
You can approach objectives in different ways. In theory, you can take open firefights. In practice, enemies often have the advantage in numbers and technology, so sneaking, flanking, and picking people off from a distance is usually the smarter play. This is still Sniper Elite at heart: patience, positioning, and timing pay off.
- Sneak in and eliminate enemies by surprise.
- Set up long-range shots with your sniper rifle from safety.
- Mix tactics: quiet movement first, loud exit if things go wrong.
Weapons, upgrades, and that famous X-ray camera
You get access to a World War II-era arsenal that you can modify and upgrade as you progress. Tweaking your gear gives you a practical sense of growth - not just bigger numbers, but tools that better fit how you like to play.
And when you land sniper shots, the series’ signature X-ray kill camera returns. It “scans” the enemy at the moment of impact and shows the damage in a brutal, clinical way. It’s not subtle, but it’s part of the identity here - you’ll probably find yourself lining up shots just to see the result. Then you remember you still have to escape.
Propaganda side missions: quick, timed resistance challenges
Sniper Elite: Resistance adds propaganda side missions. You unlock them by finding special posters during the main missions. These let you play as a resistance fighter and push you into time-limited objectives. They’re a neat change of rhythm: less slow planning, more “move now, think fast.” If you like squeezing efficiency out of a route, these missions give you that pressure-cooker feeling.
Solo, co-op, and competitive multiplayer
You can play the game singleplayer or jump into multiplayer. If you’re the type who likes comparing plans with a friend, co-op can change how you read a level. One of you watches a lane with a rifle while the other sneaks in for sabotage, and suddenly the mission feels like a coordinated operation instead of a lonely crawl.
Co-op and Horde
The game supports co-op in the story campaign and also includes a Horde mode for cooperative survival. It’s the classic question: do you keep your cool when waves hit and resources get tight?
Invasion and 16-player matches
For something more unpredictable, there’s Invasion, where you hunt other players (or get hunted). On top of that, there’s competitive multiplayer for up to 16 players. If you enjoy learning maps and reading opponents, this is where the slow, careful sniper mindset turns into a mind game.
Should you play Sniper Elite: Resistance?
If you like third-person shooters where stealth is usually the smarter option, and you enjoy mission-based infiltration with sniping at the center, Sniper Elite: Resistance gives you a clear, focused experience. You’re in WWII France, you’re dismantling a Wunderwaffe project, and you can do it alone or with others. Just remember: the cleanest shot is only half the job - getting out is the part you’ll talk about afterward.
