Total War: PHARAOH is a historical strategy game set in Ancient Egypt, with the classic Total War split: a turn-based campaign where you run a state, and real-time battles where you command armies on a massive scale. The story frame is simple but sharp: the ruling pharaoh has died, and everyone is watching to see who takes the throne. Egypt, Canaan, and the Hittite Empire all expect a new leader. You pick your side and try to become the one name that survives the chaos.
Total War: PHARAOH - what you actually do
You play on two layers that constantly feed into each other. On the campaign map, you take your turns, build momentum, and try to keep your realm from slipping through your fingers. In battles, you switch to real-time command and deal with the messy part: formations, morale, terrain, and those moments where a plan looks great until it hits the battlefield.
Choose a leader, live with the consequences
You start by choosing from eight faction leaders across three cultural centers. Each leader has unique traits that affect how you play. It is the kind of choice that can feel small at first, and then quietly shapes every decision you make later. Do you lean into diplomacy? Push your economy hard? Or chase decisive wars? You can try all of it, but you will feel the trade-offs.
Campaign layer: turns, cities, economy, and politics
The strategic map is detailed and stretches across a wide slice of the ancient world: from the fertile banks of the Nile, through the harsh deserts of the Sinai Peninsula, and up to the mountainous terrain of ancient Anatolia. On your turns, you handle the unglamorous work that wins wars:
- develop your economy and cities
- conduct trade and exchange resources
- use diplomacy to secure breathing room or set traps
- recruit and equip armies
This is where you set the conditions for your fights. A strong economy means you can replace losses. Smart diplomacy can buy you time. And if you ignore logistics, battles will punish you. It is not complicated for the sake of being complicated. It is the kind of pressure that makes you pause on a turn and think, is this really the moment to expand?
Real-time battles: scale, terrain, morale, and chaos
When armies meet, you move into real-time battles with thousands of units. The outcome is not just about raw numbers. You need to consider the ground you are standing on and how your troops feel about the fight. Terrain matters. Morale matters. And yes, sometimes a single bad decision snowballs into a full retreat.
Weather and fire change the fight
Battles are spiced up by sudden shifts in weather, including sandstorms. Visibility can drop. Plans can break. On top of that, fire plays an important role, with the game dynamically simulating how it spreads across the battlefield. It is one of those features that sounds like a detail until you see it reshape a frontline. Are you using fire as a tool, or are you accidentally turning your own position into a problem?
Campaign customization: make each run feel different
Total War: PHARAOH adds campaign customization options aimed at making no two playthroughs the same. You can enable things like:
- random starting positions for all factions
- detailed resource settings
- the possibility of natural disasters
If you like experimenting, this is where you get your replay value. If you prefer a more controlled campaign, you can keep things steadier. Either way, you are not forced into a single “correct” setup.
Singleplayer and multiplayer
You can play solo or jump into multiplayer over the internet. That flexibility matters because this is the sort of strategy game that can be a long, thoughtful campaign one night, and a competitive test of tactics another.
Presentation and scale
On the technical side, Total War: PHARAOH is noted for attractive visuals and high detail, especially in its depiction of Ancient Egypt, and for the sheer scale of its battles. It is easy to get distracted just watching formations collide - but you still have to make the calls.
If you want a Total War game that leans into Ancient Egypt, mixes a turn-based empire layer with huge real-time battles, and lets you tweak campaign rules for different kinds of runs, Total War: PHARAOH is built exactly for that loop.
