Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint is an open-world third-person shooter (with a first-person view when you aim) where you land on the fictional Pacific island of Auroa to figure out why contact suddenly went dark. You play as Nomad, a Ghost you can customize (including choosing your character’s gender), and you quickly learn you are not walking into a normal recon job. The island has been seized by a mercenary force made up of ex-commandos, led by Walker, and the tech company Skell sits right in the middle of the mess.

What you do on Auroa in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint

You push the story forward by completing missions, but a lot of your progress comes from paying attention. You look around, talk to neutral characters, interrogate enemies, and collect intel. If you like the idea of being guided by clues instead of glowing markers, there is a dedicated mode that lets you play without mission icons on the map. It can feel slower, sure, but it also makes the island feel more like a place and less like a checklist.

Between main objectives, you can roam for side activities. You travel on foot or use a wide selection of vehicles (the game features around thirty different ones). And unlike the previous entry’s solo setup, going alone here means no AI squadmates following you around. It’s just you, your plan, and whatever goes wrong when the shooting starts.

Combat, stealth, and the “survival” twist

Fights are your bread and butter, but the game tries to make them a bit messier than a clean shooting gallery. There is a injury and wound system that can affect how effective you are in combat. You can treat problems with different items, so you’re not stuck limping forever, but it adds a layer of decision-making. Do you push forward while hurt, or take a moment to patch up?

Stealth gets some extra toys. You can use natural camouflage by covering yourself in mud to blend into the environment and set up an ambush. When you do go loud, you have more than rifles: rocket launchers show up, and you get gadgets such as a cutting torch that lets you make your own door by cutting holes in fences. It’s the kind of small tool that makes you say, “Okay, that’s handy,” right before you alert a patrol by accident.

Progression, loot, and building your soldier

Breakpoint introduces looter-shooter elements. Weapons and gear you find have levels, and some enemies expect you to show up with equipment that can match them. If you enjoy tweaking a loadout and watching your build grow, you’ll have plenty to tinker with. If you prefer everything to be purely skill-based, this system is something you’ll want to keep in mind when deciding whether to play.

You also choose a class specialization in the story mode and develop it as you progress. It’s a straightforward way to push you toward a role, without locking you into a single approach for the whole game.

Singleplayer, co-op, and PvP modes

You can play the campaign solo, but the game also supports multiplayer in two forms:

  • Co-op campaign where you tackle story missions together. You can share equipment with teammates in special camps, and you can carry injured allies to safety.
  • Ghost Wars, a PvP mode if you want a more competitive setup.

A key detail is that your character progression is shared across all modes. So time you spend improving your soldier in one mode carries over to the others.

Story tone and presentation

This is set in the same universe as Ghost Recon: Wildlands, but it tells a separate story rather than being a direct continuation. Cutscenes sometimes let you choose dialogue lines for Nomad, which can make conversations feel a bit more like you’re steering the character instead of just watching.

Technical notes and what to expect

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint uses detailed 3D visuals, with high-detail environments, character models, and weapons, backed by realistic lighting. It also had a military advisor involved in production and the script, which fits the game’s grounded, tactical vibe.

If you want an open-world shooter where you gather intel, plan approaches, and decide when to be patient or aggressive, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint gives you a lot of space to play your way - alone, with friends, or against other players.
