Lost Judgment is a third-person action adventure set in the same universe as the Yakuza series, but it isn’t directly tied to the mainline entries. You step back into the role of Takayuki Yagami, a former lawyer turned private detective, and head to Yokohama when a strange murder starts pulling at loose threads. If you like crime stories that mix serious drama with the occasional weird detour, you’ll feel right at home. This prequel adventure is known as Judgment.
What you do in Lost Judgment
You’re basically juggling two lives: detective work and street-level action. One minute you’re following a lead in the Ijincho district of Yokohama, the next you’re in a fistfight with thugs in the middle of the street. The main case starts with the body of an unidentified young man, then gets messier when information about that murder appears in an unrelated courtroom situation. Naturally, you decide it’s worth digging into yourself. Because if something doesn’t add up, it’s going to itch.
The story structure follows the approach of the previous game: a heavy main plot sits next to side activities that can get surprisingly comedic and offbeat. It’s the kind of pacing where you can go from tense conversations to “wait, why am I doing this?” and then back again. And yes, that contrast is part of the charm.
Exploration: Kamurocho and Ijincho
You explore an open world across the districts of Kamurocho and Ijincho. You move through city streets, pick up tasks, and bounce between main missions and optional content. It’s urban exploration rather than wilderness roaming: corners, alleys, storefronts, and places that feel like they exist for more than just map icons.
Real-time combat with three styles
Lost Judgment brings combat back to real-time brawling. You can switch between three fighting styles on the fly, which changes how you handle each encounter. It’s not just cosmetic; it pushes you to think about spacing, timing, and the type of enemy in front of you.
- Crane - your go-to when you’re surrounded and need crowd control.
- Tiger - built for one-on-one fights where you want direct, focused pressure.
- Snake - a new counterattack-based style, rewarding patience and clean reads.
Picking the “right” style can make a messy fight feel smooth. Or you can stubbornly stick to your favorite and learn the hard way. Both are valid.
Investigation, chases, and stealth
Your detective toolkit returns and gets expanded. You question people, investigate scenes, and chase suspects. The pursuit sequences and interrogations are part of your routine, not one-off gimmicks, so you spend real time doing the detective thing.
Movement options are also broader this time. You can climb along building edges, run on walls, and swing across gaps. It adds a bit of physicality to following leads - you’re not just walking from marker to marker.
There are stealth missions too. You distract patrolling enemies, throw objects, and try to stay unnoticed while you search for key evidence. It’s a different rhythm than fistfights: slower, more careful, and occasionally tense in that “please don’t turn around” way.
Side content and the high school angle
Like other games in this universe, Lost Judgment packs in optional content. To gather information connected to the case, you take a job at a local high school. While you’re there, you can stumble into “school stories,” which function as side quests and give you more excuses to explore a different slice of the setting.
And when you need a break from the main mystery, there are minigames. You can do activities like dancing, boxing tournaments, playing classic SEGA arcade titles, or even building remote-controlled robots. It’s a lot, and it’s intentionally varied. Some of it will grab you. Some of it you’ll ignore. That’s the point.
Modes and technical notes
Lost Judgment is single-player only, focused on its story campaign. Some minigames can be played with a friend via local multiplayer, but the core experience is you and the case.
On the technical side, the game runs on the Dragon Engine and uses motion capture, which shows in character animation, combat, and cutscenes. There’s no Polish language version. You can choose between Japanese and English audio: Japanese comes with a more literal translation, while English aims for dialogue that feels more natural for Western players.
Should you play Lost Judgment?
If you want a crime-thriller story in Yokohama, real-time brawling with multiple combat styles, and detective work that includes chases and stealth, Lost Judgment gives you a clear, focused package. And if you’re the kind of player who enjoys serious drama plus the occasional bizarre side detour, you’ll probably be smiling at least once an hour.
